Balian is a Christian, ex-crusader from 17th Century Scotland, who used to hold a small Barony in Inverness. His lineage is not entirely human, providing him with extraordinary longevity. His arch nemesis is Laufeia De La Neige; a vicious and completely unhinged vampire who kidnapped Balian's son: Loki, and murdered wife and parents in the process.

During their battle, Balian was badly injured and infected with the vampirism virus. However, he never fully turned, instead becoming afflicted with an excruciating disease of the blood, leading him to drink away the pain. Obviously, due to the trauma he suffered, he is now bitter and angry; his faith hanging by a thread.

Unbeknownst to him, Balian is now immune to vampirism, making his blood quite valuable to some; namely, the ancient vampires: Muadh and Morna.

Balian is now on a centuries-long journey to find Laufeia, retrieve his son and exact his bloody revenge!
