In an overall prosperous and rich kingdom, Rathnait and those she now calls family are forced to live a life of secrecy and fear.
How their distinct features came to be is, for now, an uncertainty. Some speculate that it is hereditary, others claim it is the result of an ancient curse. Still, every so often, a child will find themselves slowly growing animal-like features, commonly a form of horns or antlers.
In the beginning, such characteristics were shunned, and children were often cast out of their families, the same as many mages have and still experience at a high rate.
But with the increase in wealth and status pursuit throughout the land, some among the nobility began to shift their views from disgust to the prospect of profit. What had before been seen as hideous was now viewed as beautiful, and more dangerously, highly collectible to those with enough coin. The result was a gory hunt, which forced the targets to band together in secluded clans and establish hidden camps as far away as possible.

Rathnait was born in such a camp at the foot of a mountain. She has had little to no interaction with the outside world and knows only what has been told to her by those who eventually find their way there for protection.
After most of her clan is discovered and murdered, she finds herself completely alone for the first time in her life, until she meets Lavel, who is alone and secluded much like herself. The two of them become friends, and Rathnait settles in a place close to Lavel's cottage.
While she is still wary of being found by hunters, her newfound friendship opens her up to others, who will eventually become her new family.
