Tristan is quite far removed from reality, and often interacts with others under an exaggerated pretence. He has a tendency to melodramatically overreact to things. This is a defence mechanism and reflects his insincere nature, which is evident in the way that insults tend to bounce right off of him. Because of this, he is also lacking in tact. He enjoys ridiculing others to watch how they react, and plays into the game when others wind him up in turn.

The trouble is that he over identifies with the facade he has created around himself. He is drawn to others whose personality he feels reflects his own preferred identity. But his self image is grandiose and ultimately shallow. It is impossible for others to live up to his expectations, and their humanity eventually exposes his own flaws. It is in this way that others disappoint him, and the only way he is hurt.

Beneath his vapid, bohemian lifestyle, and his identity confusion, he is lonely - Anxiously wanting to connect, but never quite working out how. He never really asks himself how he truly feels about things. Rather than question his actions, he lives them. This contrasts with Alexander who obsessively questions everything.

Tristan is extraordinarily ambitious in his pursuit of his career as a model. He is aware of how hansom he is, and is willing to do just about anything to reach his ideal, to the extent with which this becomes a bitter point of self harm.
