1 limited doll vs several dolls?

Mar 11, 2012

    1. So recently, I've had the task of deciding what I want to do with my paycheck. Do I want to buy a limited doll, or do I wanna buy a non-limited doll, and possibly another or a body for my boy that doesn't have a head? Since limited dolls are so expensive because they're well, limited and sometimes come with a full outfit.

So I was wondering how you all decide on what to get, and your thought process on the matter.

Do you save up and buy a limited doll? Do you put them on layway? Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price? How did you come to that answer? owo

    2. What doll do you love?

Are you just buying a limited doll for no reason apart from it being limited, or do you really want and love that mold (if it's mold limited) and the stuff it comes with (which you can join a split for)?
I don't see a point in buying limited just for it being limited if you don't really, really want it. If you have the money and your heart is saying to buy your floating head a body, then do that.

If you don't really want to do either option, then don't spend that money on dolls at all.

Personally, if I had the money, I would just buy whichever I loved most and felt right to my gut. If I had any cash left over that I didn't need for bills or important things, I would probably put it towards accessories and clothes for the new doll.

    3. I go with what I really like and can afford. The good thing about basics is that they will (generally) always be there. If you're really set on the limited, go for it.

What kind of limited fullset are you looking at? The sort where the extras are already included or the sort that you can choose what, if any, extras to include? If it's the latter, you can always just get the doll itself. Get it blank and you might be able do both the things you want.

    4. @ Schtiel: No, I really fell in love with the limited doll, but kinda reguessing myself because he's over 1000$ and I could buy two of my wanted dolls for that price. Or one doll ( that I've wanted ) and a body for my body-less boy. >.< So it's just a toss up for me.

@ Silverholly: I was looking at a limted full set where everything is included. There's the option of a split but I really fell in love with the doll and the outfit. >.<

    5. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?

I actually skip over limited dolls on purpose. I want to know that a doll will be readily available, and I won't 'fall in love' with it unless it is.

Do you put them on layway?

I only ever buy dolls when I can pay for them upfront and in full. I also do not buy heads and bodies at different times. If I can't afford it all right now then I can't afford it, there's no wiggle room for me.

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?

I'm having a similar issue with the doll that I'm saving for at the moment. He's 70cm, and I could get 2 MSDs for how much he will cost me. However I think you have to pick the doll that you really want. Who's to say that one special doll can't be worth more to someone than hundreds of ones that they don't love?

    6. If it came down to a decision like that for me, if my feeling wasn't clear that I definitely wanted the limited, I'd get the basic dolls :D

    7. Personally, I'd go for the limited. My reasoning being that you may end up regretting not getting the doll when you had the chance later on, which is never a fun time. Secondly, it sounds as if it would be a lot easier for you to save up for the non-limited afterwards.

    8. I found a doll that I loved, and she SCREAMED at me to Please Please take her home!! Unfortunately she was limited. But I also got her second hand, so got a small discount on her.
If I find something that I truely love, I find a way to get it. Otherwise I save my pennies. Something will come along that you just Have to have!

    9. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?
I know I will sometimes fall in love with a limited doll. I will TRY to make sure I have some money saved up so that if this happens, I can maybe get the doll. If I don't have the money at all, of course I will have to miss out--or try to later find it on the marketplace.

Do you put them on layway?
YES. Because, although it takes longer to get the doll, I will still have some money just in case a limited doll--or a doll on the Marketplace (it isn't limited, but like a limited, it will only be available until someone buys it)-- I may need to have some extra money to get that doll. I can be patient in order to get the dolls I really want.

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?
No. It is more important to me to get the dolls I want. If a doll is limited, it is possible I might not find it again, so I will try for the limited (or the Marketplace doll or ebay doll--it is the same thinking--that I may never find it again). I know that I can always get the other dolls later...

How did you come to that answer?
It is only what makes sense *to me*. Other people may want to have dolls NOW and that is what makes their decision. I don't mind waiting. So, if I wish for a certain doll that I need to buy now-or-(maybe)-never, I will try for that doll.
Of course, this is why I have so many limiteds... I have to wait for money to be saved in order to buy dolls on my Wish List... but that almost never happens! Although it does happen now and then. I have bought a body for my head, and at times I can save money for other bits and pieces... I decide on what really matters to me. Everyone else will have different things that matter to them...

    10. Assuming that I like all of the options, first, I will check if the limited doll is value for money. For example, I wouldn't pay premiums for limited outfits or faceups, but I might consider for limited sculpts. If I'm looking to buy from the marketplace, I will check if the price is right, if there are other alternatives or offers or splits possible, or I will stalk a few threads to see if the prices come down. If it's not worth the price, I will not buy it. Then maybe I will look at the other dolls. But I don't usually buy basic dolls, so I don't have the option of buying several dolls for the price of one limited. =_=

    11. I'd just get the dolls I really want to with that money. Be it LE or regular dolls.

    12. I bought my dream doll an Unoa Luisis and was in love then i found an unoa chibi and fell in love again. i feel a bit guilty that my luisis is not getting as much attention (not in a creepy way. just she was not cheap and i feel bad for not making more of her)

    13. My experience is that standard dolls can be discontinued and sometimes without any warning(!), which makes me go for the doll I want most. Otherwise I risk buying the limiteds first and end up missing out on the standard dolls I want.
I had to say no to some limiteds that I really wanted, because I did not have the money to buy them at the time they were available at the company. Some of those I'm hunting down now piece by piece. It's hurts my wallet more in the end and it takes more effort, but the doll is worth it. I do have to say that I would have bought the doll directly from the company if I had the money.
In other cases I'm glad I went for the standard doll and passed on buying a limited instead. Some of my now discontinued standard dolls are rather hard to find on the second hand market (they just weren't that popular), so I'm glad I can spend my time on searching for a much easier to find limited doll. ;)

I don't like layaways, so I try to avoid them. I'd rather save up to buy a doll and reserve the money I earn in the future for things that may happen in the future, but that is a personal choice. Some people love layaways.

    14. You know, as the other girls already said, you should buy just the doll you want to have right now ^^

True, maybe if you buy a standard doll the limited one won't be able to buy anymore, but if you don't like that limited doll so much, why to spend all the money?
The same if it's the other case: if you're loving a limited doll, don't worry if you could buy more dolls with the same money, because no doll is cheap, they can be less expensive, but anyway if you are going to get rid of an amount of bucks then the best choice would be just having the doll you like more :)

    15. I own mostly limited dolls. Every time I'm saving for a regular doll, someone releases a limited that I can't resist. They're not really that much more expensive than a regular doll unless you start including extras like outfits, and even then you'd pay the same to get a similar quality outfit for a regular release doll. So I wouldn't necessarily frame it as having one limited doll or several basic dolls. By the time you've bought outfits, wigs, eyes and sorted out faceups, each one of those basic dolls may have cost at least as much as a fullset limited.

I've tried skipping on limiteds I really wanted in the past - to focus on saving for another doll - and I always really regretted it. Now I just take the risk, and if I can afford the limited I'll get it. I can always sell it later if things don't work out, and being limited there's a good chance there will be people looking for it who missed the ordering period.

    16. I always go with my gut feeling and buy the one that really speaks to me. All these dolls are expensive, so I may as well have the ones I want, even if it takes a little longer.

    17. I agree with what it seems most people have said- think about which you would love more. Either way, this is a very expensive hobby, and in the end, if you're going to pay even $200 for a resin doll, you should probably make sure it's the one you're going to enjoy the most. If you think getting several 'cheaper' dolls is going to make you happier, go with that option. If you think you're going to be happier with just one LE doll, maybe you should get the LE :) All in all, it's down to the individual. I myself have passed up LEs I liked to get a couple of smaller dolls that I liked more, and in turn, I have put off getting two or three small dolls for just one LE that I liked. It all came down to which doll I preferred in the end.

    18. I had a similar dilema when I got my first LE doll. In the end I went with the LE because it was literally my dream doll and if I missed it I would have regretted it forever. Some other dolls I also wanted at the time that were much less and would have been easily bought with the money for that one LE were passed on...and then I never even bothered to get them after. I don't regret it at all.

That said I have never bought an LE just for the sake of it being limited, I've only bought the ones I wanted as dolls bald, blank, naked and eyeless if that makes sense. Almost none of them wear any of the fullsets they came with (exception being my GM Ripley Days since he's so big and I only recently got him other clothes to wear^^; ) and with some of them I didn't bother to keep the clothes at all.

Basically as everyone else has said, go with what you want most. If that LE is something you want so bad and will truly regret missing out on, do it. If it's just something you want because it's limited, take a step back and look at the other dolls again.

      Good luck! <3

    19. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?
If you can save up the money and make the outright purchase then do it!

Do you put them on layway?
I do layaway because it's easier for me and reserves your doll. It's a good alternative for us who can't always afford him or her right away. Plus it helps break up the cost over several months so you're not going broke all at once...

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?
If you really really really love that doll; get it. Quality over quantity. Are you going to love the other dolls just as much as that one limited. Remember that many dolls may never make up for that one perfect doll.

Something else that I'm noticing in the world of LE's is that companies like Soom and Crobi and others are rereleasing their limited dolls without the original "goodies". It's the outfit that is LE rather than the doll. I personally wouldn't purchase from the companies that engage in the practice because it makes Limiteds not limited.

How did you come to that answer?
Patience and practice. I have foregone several LEs because of the patience; to make sure that I really wanted it. I have 3 LE dolls. I wanted them and stared at them for hours. I tried to fit them into my doll family... I made sure that it was really what I wanted and not just the 'OMIGAWDTHATISSOPRETTY!!!!!!' effect. I wanted them because I wanted them; not because they were limited editions.

    20. I agree with the above. What matters most is not whether it's limited or not, but whether you can't live without out. Whether you really love the sculpt. If the answer is yes, go for it. It's much better to have one doll you adore, than many that are simply ok. If you like them all, get the limited first.
