1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

3D facial hair on dolls

Nov 17, 2022

    1. I've seen a lot of dolls where the faceup had stubble or very thin facial hair painted on but now I'm wondering if anyone's got a doll with a full mustache/beard. Hard to tell if it's a feasibility issue or if it's just because most people in the hobby gravitate towards a more youthful look with male characters.

    2. Okay so it’s not facial hair technically but I’ve seen AiL do like, free standing lower eyelashes— I think it’s possible. A lot of like play line dolls use felting ( i believe that’s the term for it?? It’s like glue, and a bunch of little fuzzies) for like, shaved hair sides and beards, so on a doll about 1/4 and up I think it can be done, it’d be super time consuming tho finding a technique that works best....

Perhaps maybe some kind of lace front thing? I dunno, best of luck!

    5. There are some artists that did facial hair with glued on hair vs painted. Sillymysteriouswoman for example:
      Silly on Instagram: "Beards #bjd #bjdfaceup #bjdmakeup #dollfaceup #dollmakeup #faceupcomission #makeupcomission"

The biggest issue is gluing it on in a way it properly adheres to the face without it looking stiff/crusty. Especially in the area where it goes from bare skin to hair. Difficult to get a nice fade going. It's probably best to paint on the outer edges, and then glue on the rest of the hair.

Ebidoll ventilated a beard, but I feel like the knots and net are a bit too heavy/visible:
      Ebi Doll on Instagram: "Commission wig & beard (removable) No half bun / half bun #bjd #balljointeddoll #artdoll #bjddollshe #manbun #doll #dolls #abjd #bjdwig #blackhair #dollwig #manbunhairstyle #abjd #ebidoll #ebidollwig #bjdwigsales"

The mentioned flocking looks, uh, not good. It's just one thick fuzzy layer and it looks pretty odd/nothing like a real beard.

    7. I no longer own this doll, but he temporarily had a beard made from wool roving (like the kind you use for needlefelting) just glued directly to his face with Aleene's Tacky Glue (washes off fairly easily!)

    8. Wow!!!! It's awesome seeing all these dolls with beards! I love the variety <3

    9. I glued my guy's beard on with white school glue. It's not perfect, but I think I got the edges done pretty well. It's combed yarn and I did it in 2-3 layers. The first layer was really stiff but the next hid that well.

    10. Oh I do! I love facial hair on my dolls. Durga would not be himself without his bushy sideburns, and Kohei's face would be just empty without his signature beard and mustache. Like with all my dolls' hair I use a blend of different alpaca and/or mohair fiber to get as realistic an effect as possible given that my characters are mostly in their fourties or older. (we desperately need more older characters depicted as dolls, I swear...)

    11. I haven't made wigs so I could be way off, but is it possible to make a beard wig? I feel like I'm too non committal and would love an option to have the nice fibers like soenatta but I don't have to keep reapplying when In tired of the smooth look.

    12. Beard wigs made with things like wig lace and other good materials do exist in people sizes! :D I don't see any reason why one couldn't make smaller versions either from scratch using ventilated wig techniques or by trimming down an existing beard wig.

    13. I'll have to look up how the people ones are made then and see if I can get that done. It sounds so neat.
