A Change in Character

Jul 8, 2012

    1. When I first bought my AOD Dolls Zi Yuan and Qian I (thought) I knew exactly what I envisioned for them. They were to be the doll equivalent of my two wolf characters Ginger Snap and Helen. I had a period where my art changed and I struggled figuring out what I wanted to do, that was also the time where I didn't use my dolls. Now about a year later my art has changed and I realized the direction I want my girls to go in and it's much different now . . . I'm excited about this change. Has this happened to anyone else?

    2. When I got my Fairyland Roke, he didn't look as wicked and imposing as I thought he had on the site's sales page. Instead he looks kind of cute and 'derpy.' So I think maybe he takes himself more seriously than others do. Kind of a Don Quixote type and not an Alexander the Great.

    3. I bought my Leekeworld Koji with plans for him to be Noble, my D&D playing, song writing, dorky teen nerd. But it never felt like HIM, and though I loved the sculpt, it felt wrong. I started looking for a sculpt for Tanner, my adventurous, manly biker a couple of months later. When I started planning to make his wig, though I had no head, I used Noble's head as my model...and guess what? That Koji was NOT my nerd, but my biker! I now have Tanner shelled in the Koji head and he looks great, IMO. I'm still looking for the right sculpt for Noble.

    4. I have a few dolls that I have purchased with one idea in mind for them only to have them reveal a totally different personality than the one I had planned. Some of the tinies have even changed gender on me! :)

    5. Yes. Several times, I have had dolls decide to be someone else than the character I had planned for them.

    6. I don't really have characters planned out, but I've had dolls end up nothing like what I'd imagined. Very few end up with the wig/eyes/clothes I'd planned for them. Like sealion, I've even had some change genders. My Napidoll Angz was going to be a girl, but ended up as a boy because the female body I bought for her didn't work out. My Switch Javi was supposed to be a boy, and he ended up as a girl when I swapped his body with the body I'd planned on using for Angz. It all worked out, though! The nice thing was that it was like getting a new doll in a way, since Javi changed so much. Also, I like Javi much more as a girl. The only problem is that I have trouble remembering to refer to Javi as "she" now.

    7. Yes, definitely. Sometimes I have to wait so long for a doll that I have the perfect plan for it when it arrives. And then said doll tells me that she has no intention to be what I wanted her to be. But at least they usually tend to tell you who they are :)

    8. Sort of. But I try not to set their personality and style in stone before the actual doll arrive, because I have learned to kinda let the doll become or develop into something that is totally right and much better than I had hoped for.
Like my first girl, I just knew when I got her that she likes to dress in stripes. why? I don't know. She just does.
Now I have characters for the dolls I intend to buy, but also I have dolls that I want but no plans for. I hope that the doll will just kind of decide on her own. I will know when it is right.

    9. I have completely overhauled my doll a couple times. The reason I suppose was that I had different ideas about it before I actually experienced owning one. Now their pretty set though. I leave a lot of wiggle room though.

    10. i had hoped and hoped that my first doll would be who i planned her to be and dreaded the thought that she could be wrong for my Shay character but i guess i was really lucky with her

    11. Most of my impulse buys don't have anything planned... So when I bought my Chrom head second hand (and bought his body later during a Soom event) I didn't have anything special planned for him. He was just a plain looking guy. But it bothered me that he was so boring; I even attempted selling him. One day I had an epiphany and made him dress unmatching clothes and a crazy wig... I decided he was becoming my hipster guy and then I started buying more fitting clothes. Needless to say I can't be happier with him!

    12. I've had a number of my dolls change character on me! The first was my iple Efreet girl...I really wanted her to be Aya and she just wasn't pulling it off, but when I randomly put some darker eyes in her she immediately became much more fitting as Suki.

I also recently bought Jun Tachibana and Suiseiseki with characters in mind for them, only for it to not really work out in my head at all. I'm only just now getting down who I think they are, but they're both gonna need different eyes now ^^; It's nice though when the dolls tell you who they are! That almost always happens with my Soom Little Gems.

    13. Oh god yes. I've swapped characters around so many times at this point... I got it down to the sculpts that I know I want to keep, but there are a few dolls I've really gone back and forth with in terms of character.

    14. I just changed my adventurous elf boy into an SD body and dyed his MSD body blue and turned it into an alien named Caane so... I'm gonna have to go with yes.

    15. As a writer (well, someone who loves to make up stories LOL) I've had characters change themselves as I write. These dolls are doing the same thing - I'm writing characters for them & they've got different ideas LOL

    16. I've already changed concepts for dolls I planned to get in the future, and I'm leaning toward changing the character of another one of my dolls. xP

    17. Yes, absolutely that has happened to me. My second doll was a fantasy doll girl and I had a general idea of her character. and then a few months after not doing anything with her, I picked her up and just knew that direction and character just wasn't for the doll. We 180d pretty quickly after that. That happens sometimes in any creative endeavor I think, that epiphany or sudden realization that this was wrong and this new idea is better.

    18. Yes, definitely. All three of my elves have changed completely from what they originally were. Aisling was sweet but completely oblivious to human ways, but lately she's becoming more of a sassy tween. Fionan was supposed to be her dad and Cailean her protector, but now they're lovers and I'm not sure they're connected to her in any way.

    19. Yes. My first SD Elijah was supposed to be a very tough kinda angry guy. I kept him like that for almost a year and had trouble bonding with him. He just didn't click. So I changed his character totally into a very nerdy calm guy xD Now he's perfect and he's finally clicked ^_^

    20. None of my dolls can 100% meet the characters in my mind, I tried to give them right wig, eyes and clothes, but didn't work, it obsesses me vey much....
