1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

A company makes a doll based on you

Nov 6, 2014

    1. I have been thinking...
Say that a company has a contest - a sort of lottery - which they will randomly draw one winner, as long as you entered. - It will not cost you anything, it would just require you to send your email address or something like that...

So, the prize, for this one winner, is that they will make a doll out of you or based on you. I will limit it to that they will just be making the head, and keep to their original body-line.

But there is a catch... They will give you the finished doll for free, but they also want to make the doll available for public purchase, either as a limited or unlimited doll. And you would have had to agree to this before you enter the contest, of course.

      - Would you do it? Why or why not? Would the company, who made the offer, alter your decision?

    2. I love the concept of this idea but I probably wouldn't do it only because I wouldn't want the doll to be available for public purchase; I wouldn't feel comfortable with people being able to essentially buy my face, it would be too weird. However, if a company did something like this and made a doll based on me just for me, I would love it! It would definitely be interesting and cool to see myself in doll form :)

    3. Oh man, maybe. I'm not conventionally attractive enough to really be made into a doll, at least not a successfully selling one, but it would be kind of neat!

    4. I think I would be kinda creeped out by that. Your 'own' face would start to show up on other owners photo's and I don't like photo's of myself. Aysun has a face close to my own, atleast for me, that I couldn't buy her a lovely brown wig for her, cause it would remind me to much of myself, and then I would be playing with myself... no thank you.

    5. I would love to see my face on a Doll Chateau doll.

    6. It depends. If it were just "inspired" by my head I wouldn't mind, but if it where exactly like my face I don't think I'd be confortable with that.

    7. I wouldn't mind. I'm not the prettiest person there is, but I think one could make interesting boy-doll with my face.
Also, if some poor person actually wants a doll that looks like me... well, why not? Face up makes miracles.

I do wish there would be more 'western' looking dolls around that doesn't look like supermodels.

    8. This. :)

If it would be taking your face and translating it into a doll in that company's style, it would be very interesting. But I don't think I'd be comfortable with a perfectly copied mini-me. If that makes any sense.

    9. Not sure why but the idea unsettles me, I've seen dolls based off famous people before and it doesn't bother me at all. Although I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't enter a contest like this in fear of being judged. The thought that I'm buying someone else's face is intriguing, but I don't know if I would buy it... I'm sure it would sell, but it definitely wouldn't be something for me. It would also be a bit heartbreaking to read reviews of others who didn't win who are jealous, the person the doll was based off being unsatisfied with the finished product, and those that just don't like the sculpt. Everyone is a critic, and it could hurt in the end.

    10. I want to say I'd be ok with it. It'd be pretty awesome to own doll-me. I'd be cool with other people owning a doll-me too... until the negative comments rolled in as they usually do. It could hurt my feel goods if people started picking the sculpt apart. Especially the tumblr crowd... those folks can be brutal. If there was a way to avoid the negativity, then it'd be awesome though. Seeing all the different looks people could give the doll would be interesting.

    11. Do I get to pick the doll size and the stage in my life that's getting created? I think if I could have my 18 year old face on an Iplehouse SID, I'd be all for it! But I was not at all a cute little kid, and YoSD me would just be a financial disaster for the company. XD And now, I'm past my peak attractiveness, I don't think I'd want a minimee of me now at all, even if it was free and just for me.

I think the hardest part for most people would be if the doll ended up being very controversial, like people saying it was ugly or creepy. Or if not a single one sold, that would be embarrassing. Also, if it was just loosely based on you would be better than a realistic minimee, I think, since it would appeal to more people and be able to fit many different character types instead of just looking exactly like you.

    12. Alot of minimee dolls look only somewhat like who they are supposed to be and the faceup will change their appearance quite a bit so I think I would be ok with it. They would have to select by lottery for me to be chosen because no doll maker in their right mind would choose to commercially sell my face and expect to make any money. lol.
They would probably make me look better than my real face since a fat face on the typical slender or muscular doll bodies would just look silly. But it would be kind of fun.
There are a few fun fat man action figures made in china but I have yet to see a fat man adult BJD. Fat babies = cute. Fat guys = not so much.

    13. I really like the idea, and think it would be cool, to own a head, who was inspired my myself, but it would be a little creepy if it looked exactly like myself. ^.^

    14. Nobody would buy a doll based on me. If it did happen, I don't think I'd be seeing little doppelgangers everywhere, because people would be giving it their own interpretation. Different faceups, wigs and so on. As Therealwalter says, most Minimees end up customized and don't look at all like the original person.

    15. I am leaning towards that. I think if a company decides on a size (or if they leave it up to you/the winner) they would have to adapt to the age difference. Such as if you are 100 years old and want a YoSD... I am inclined to think that it would be based on you. An old YoSD is a bit contradictory. But do-able nonetheless...

Also - twins aside - there is only one you. Just as there is only one Fairyland Chloe, or what not... Chloe does not appeal to everyone, just as every one person does not appeal to all others. How is you, looking exactly like you, any different to Chloe looking exactly like Chloe?

This is my thought on the matter as well. I am very curious to how the doll would look (and probably the only reason I would enter)! But of course, not everyone is going to like it and yeah... The hate that the opportunity, if I say so, was wasted on this ugly person, instead of this guy or that gal, would probably get to me or make me dislike the doll.

I am unsettled by minimees or dolls of famous people... I cannot really pinpoint why either. Sure, part of it is that I hardly think permission was gotten...
But if we turn back to the issue of you, yourself, being made into a doll for the masses... The fact that the doll could be modded or "painted" in a way that would feel offensive or just wrong, to you... But you cannot be offended, because you gave the company permission to turn your face into a doll. And nobody is to say what other people can and cannot do with their dolls. So I think that is another reason why I would not enter the contest.

    16. I would have a lot of mixed feelings about having a doll that looked like the real life me. It would be cool if it was my sona that I use online but the real life thing would creep me out too much. As for the part for selling the mold to other people, I may get even more 'iffy' about that cause the sona I created is special to me and the idea of lots of her floating around makes me sad. If it was the rl sculpt of me that is a definite no x.x I am pretty sure it would mess with my husband as much as it would me.

    17. There's someone on the forum (I forget who off the top of my head) who did a Minimee order based on her own face that a few other people bought too. It was really interesting.

    18. Personally, I would LOVE a fat SD guy, so never say never!

That's true, no single sculpt will appeal to everyone, but I think what I meant more was, on a more stylized sculpt, like Chloe, it's easy to change her style and personality and how her face looks with a faceup, blushing, painted on details, but with a very hyper realistic minimee that may have wrinkles, lines, scars, moles and so on built into the sculpt, it's harder to create many different character types with it, so it would have less appeal to the majority. Though if it were a very limited doll, it wouldn't be as much of a loss than if it were to become part of the standard line.

    19. Then I don't have to give up my hopes for a modeling career! <sheepish grin>

    20. Wouldn't do it regardless of company. Nobody would want a BJD with my face or body, trust me. c: Plus it would activate the 'Uncanny Valley' effect. No bueno, hombre.
