A dolly world of their own?

Mar 5, 2013

    1. (if there was a topic like this before, please inform me and I'll create a link or just delete this post ^-^)

Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?
Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
      Do they wear different clothing?
      etc

Just wondering how others view their dolls world :)

    2. My dolls mostly come from my versions of Halloweentown and Christmastown, with a couple from Eastertown. (Yes, I have watched Nightmare Before Christmas many times.) Most are Halloweentown citizens, as it is my favorite. The way I see these towns is that they all eventually border each other, and much like countries and states start blending in with each other, these do too. Like there are parts of Christmastown that feels like late Winter with Spring approaching - these are the parts that are nearer to Eastertown. Some parts of it are more like late, late fall early Winter, which border Halloweentown. Parts of Halloweentown are colder than other sections, some are like Indian Summer, depending on what other town they border. Perhaps the towns are separated by dark forests of some sort, maybe by mountain ranges. I have only thought it out so far. :) There are rural areas, suburbian neighborhoods, and even townhouses. My dolls do wear clothes appropriate for their towns without going totally overboard with the concept. I just want them to look very much their holiday, and still cool. They have high schools, middle schools, colleges, etc, shops and everything that one would expect to find in these places, and they are very much like the human world, only full of magic and a whimsy that the human world obviously lacks. :D For all my towns, I do have my elves/monsters/anthros in styles that work with what they are. Like my wizard character I have in the works will wear full wizard robes, where my skeleton that works in an apothecary in Halloweentown wears Victorian/Steampunk in a Halloween way.

I do have some human characters, but they have their own story going that will eventually cross paths with my Holiday worlds.

This is an awesome thread. I look forward to seeing other's responses!

    3. Do your dolls have a world of their own?

Hmmm... I hadn't thought they had their own world... but they must, right? I mean, if they aren't really dolls, but sentient creatures in their own right, that must be in some alternate universe in my imagination, right? (In my imagination, is important, since I know they are dolls, but they really do come alive in some way, even if I don't have a whole world built up and even though I don't think they are really running around in it when I'm not looking!) It's just that flashes of their personality and some other world where they are characters and doing something there DO pop into my mind when I look at them and dress them and all that. Not a big, involved, time-consuming thing... just little moments!

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

Oh... alternate universe something or other. Sometimes they are in some historical period that may veer off into some other reality in small or large ways. Sometimes they are in a fantasy world entirely different from our own.

I don't worry about it. These aren't developed, hard-wired, well-build worlds. I just dress some of my dolls in pseudo-Victorian and they are sort of in that sort of world--which may or may not be at all like the actual period. (I mean, it's difficult to find authentic styles, which I don't care so much about anyway, so why worry about if they are actually in the real period or in some sort of Steampunk world, or some sort of Romantic Victorian period, or whatever? As I said, that's not what's important to me. The dolls are just play-time, with a play-time that isn't too involved or complete. It's just enough to make me happy and is secondary to just dressing the dolls up in a way I like.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?

Not sure about this question, but... I have fantasy dolls... Elves and hoofed and horned and winged and animal-parts and animal-headed... So these have to have some sort of setting with other fantasy characters running about... I never SEE them, but my dolls aren't running about in an imaginative vacuum... I assume there are others like them (or maybe not), in the world they inhabit.

      Do they wear different clothing?

I have historical (-ish) outfits for them. And fantasy outfits. So I guess they do wear different clothing than say casual contemporary styles. I am totally NOT into casual contemporary stuff. I see enough of that in Real Life. I do think it's CUTE on dolls, but just not my thing. I don't even like it so much in RL. I like fancy clothes, formal clothes or designer or historical or cosplay, or fantasy or punk or goth, or whatever. My RL tastes go along with my doll tastes.

    4. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yes and no. I have two different storylines going. In the first world, it's historical Spain, but with history that didn't actually happen. The second world is basically a fantasy-filled Europe.

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

It's basically just a miniature of the human world.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?

Yes to the fantasy Europe world, no to the historical Spain world.

      Do they wear different clothing?
In historical Spain, They just wear historical fashions of the time. My characters from the other world usually wear historical clothing too, but pretty much anything goes there. Beaters seem to be rather popular.

    5. pepperonipizza, that's an awesome setting!

Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yes. Two, in fact :) Some dolls are planned for "double duty" and have a character in each of the worlds.

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?
The first (and main) one is pretty much present day in miniature. The second (and less "fixed") one is a pseudo-historical fantasy setting with a good bit of Celtic folklore mixed into it.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
In the "miniature real world", no.
In the fantasy world, there are elves, fae, orcs (although they might never actually show up since I don't care much for orc dolls, they do exist in the backstory) and there will definitely be hobbits at some point. I need an excuse to get MSDs! :)
(If anyone cares, the elves are the "light" kind, a bit Lord of the Rings, but not quite as haughty. The fae are the opposite, "dark"/"nocturnal" kind. There used to be war between them, but they've come to terms and now the elves are the day court, the fae the night court. The fae have also stopped going after humans which they used to ensnare; there was a big war against the orcs a few human generations ago during which the three peoples had to stick together in order to survive. Both fae and elves avoid most humans; even as they live in the woods close to the human castle and village, hardly any human will ever get to see an elf or a fae.)

      Do they wear different clothing?
Not in the first setting. They're pretty straightforward, modern-day styles.
In the fantasy setting, the humans will probably end up in medieval through renaissance clothes with a dash of fantasy for armor and things; the elves will get some LotR inspired outfits; and the fae's clothes will probably be the darker, slightly more ragged sort.
(I really need to start working on the fantasy clothes! I've got the designs all in my head, but for the most part I haven't got the dolls for them yet. The "real world" cast will be complete soon, but the fantasy world will take a lot more time and monies to complete ... :sigh )

      etc:
      Anything "paranormal"?
There is magic in the fantasy setting - the "natural" type as used by elves and fae, and various types used by humans, the most prominent being the wizards' and the priestesses' way. Then there's alchemy and also a kind of - I can't remember the term in English, but it's from Shadowrun: a latent form of magic that gives the character physical abilities beyond the human norm.

phew - wall of text :sweat

    6. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yep. I'm building their stories and personalities like I would do with the characters of a tabletop rpg, so the world around them is created and evolve at the same time.

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?
Actually, I'm really into tabletop rpg, so all my characters are created around the setting of Shadowrun (Shadowrun is a science fantasy dystopian cyberpunk universe set in a fictional near-future in which cybernetics, magic and fantasy creatures co-exist.)

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
It's not "my" world, as I'm not the creator of the setting, but there is fantasy characters in the Shadowrun setting (elf, ork, troll, dwarf for exemple) and I already have projects for an ork and an elf in my shadowrunner team.

      Do they wear different clothing?
Yes and no. Of course fashion evolved and there's some really weird style on the street in 2075 hehe, but a plain t-shirt and a pair of jeans are always going to be a popular choice! Still, I plan to create some really cool stuff for my dolls! I have lots of projects for them.

    7. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yes, they live in their own world, that is not our world, but a world I created.
Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?
It is a fantasy world, but unlike how many use old Europe as reference, I wanted to try something a bit different, so I took different parts of our world in different times and added together. So in some ways their world is very old fashioned, but in other ways it's very modern.
Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
Yes, but I went with something less extreme, so my fantasy characters are all humans with magical powers. (except for the mythological animals)
      Do they wear different clothing?
No, they dress pretty much like our world do. It's one of those modern things I've added to the universe.

    8. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
      Yes ^^
Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

My SD lives in this world as she does not have a backstory ect. But my others live in the european history :p starting at 17the century up to modern times ^^
Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
Yes my Victorica is the child of a death demon and a king. By getting pregnant the demon was able to regain a part of her power. So when giving birth the demon abanded the mothers body and came back as the daughter. I'm now saving up for the demon and his slave who will be half human half deer :p

      Do they wear different clothing?
differently depending on the time period in which they are at that moment.
My SD who is not part of that world just wears Lolita and Himegyaru as she is just my pretty girl ^^

    9. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yes, they do. And not just one world since the canon setting is actually a multiverse. Based on the world's cosmology all worlds were once one but because of the clashing ideals of its inhabitants the original God allowed them to separate themselves and multiple worlds were thus formed. The world of Man, Gaia, rested in the fragile balance between the heavenly kingdom of Caelum above and the Nether bellow, with Elysium orbiting its perimeter like a small moon, neither here nor there, existing in its peaceful segregated autonomy. The lush green hollow remains of the Old World surround the others and are known as Terra Orbis -or most commonly as the "Green Ring".

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

Gaia is technically our version of the modern human world however fantasy elements are bleeding into it from the other realms. Most humans are blissfully unaware of the fact even though it's not uncommon that they encounter the more humanlike of the other species. Gaia, aside from the extraplanar visitors and newcomers, also has its own "supernatural fauna" that is comprised mainly of the remnants and refugees of the people of Caelum and the Nether that were left behind after the first Holy War (an event during which the two worlds fought over Gaia's "neutral" ground) and have since become integrated with it. The nameless Organization is in charge of making sure the normal and "paranormal" creatures go along fine, hunting down ones that become a threat to humanity or others of their kind, protecting endangered species and negotiating things with the higher ranked creatures of the Nether when such a thing is required.

Terra Orbis is a pure fantasy world and its inhabitants are all fantasy creatures. Humans don't walk the pristine soil of this land as the original God, who is known by the name of Selvans Green, does not deem many of them worthy to. He has allowed passage for a select few however. It is a world where trees take on humanoid forms and wander the forests, people can freely shapeshift between the real form and regular guise, and vampires are just another race of nocturnal creatures. Terra Orbis has, in recent years, also fallen under the mysterious plague of the White Fog, a heavy mist that appears suddenly, shrouding entire regions and erasing them off the face of the world.

Caelum is a world above the clouds; its celestial palaces rise up as far as the eye can see, among the mountains and hillsides that surround them, imposing in their Gothic architecture. Only Angels walk these lands although that's just speculation as nobody has seen an Angel after their -quite costly- victory at the first Holy War. The wind is always cold up there and the winter is long and harsh, often blanketing everything in a thick layer of snow.

The Nether is the opposite of Caelum; the world is warm and relatively flat, its cities rising among sand dunes and thriving close to rivers or wherever there's a large oasis to be found. Its capital is Menorah, a grand city comprised of nine districts. Summers are long and warm and winter is practically something this plane isn't familiar with. The architecture is also suited to the terrain bearing heavy Arabic influences. The currency of the Nether is "singol", golden coins often referred to as "Hell's Gold" by the humans. Mostly demons live in this world, but the gates of the Nether are always open to those brave enough to cross them.

Last but not least, Elysium is a neo-victorian/steampunk world with heavy arcane influences. It's immortal inhabitants are known as Elysians and fall into two categories; the fair skinned and dark haired Fae (and original race of Elysium) and the dark skinned, bright haired Nefarian (that came to be because of a curse cast on a former king). It comprises of a few walled cities and the borderlands that are filled with dangerous creatures. Although Nefarian were once the same as Fae too the current council sees them as a threat and has taken extreme measures to prohibit the two 'races' from mingling and are trying to find a scapegoat to burden with their genocide.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
As it is expected yes, there are a lot of fantasy characters. Fairies, flower children, demons, angels, vampires, demon-human hybrids created through scientific experiments, homunculi, artificial beings, the Elysians, dragons, tiger shapeshifters, merfolk, deer people, tree folk... and so on so forth.

      Do they wear different clothing?
Depends on the person, the place... but yes, in general they do. In Elysium they're all dressed in sharp Victorian fashion with slight twists here and there as it is required, in the Green Ring people dress in a mixture of styles, one can see from medieval tunics and Asian-inspired robes and kimonos to Colonial dresses. In Caelum they dress similarly to humans but they tend to wear warm, flowy clothes often adorned with a variety of patterns while in the Nether less is more since its so hot; its inhabitants are also fond of patterned and colorful clothing. In Gaia they dress like normal modern people... but this doesn't apply to many of the paranormal folks around. An example would be the Pathfinder, a forest protector, who - due to his ability to constantly change his form and size, taking on the features of many a different creature at the same time- is always wearing little more than a tattered cloak and a loincloth.

    10. I have two different worlds. The main world is set in a city called Greenville, and it's basically like any large American city. All characters are human, it's a modern setting. Basically, if it's possible in our world, it is in there. If it's not possible for me to do, they can't either. No magic, no time travel, no fantasy, etc.

The other world is set in Ancient Egypt. Human, though Ay will tell you he's part god. :P It is set about as accurately as possible to Ancient Egypt standards, just filling in or altering stuff that can't be known 100%.

I used to have a Victorian/Steampunk fantasy world, but it has been scrapped and the dolls sold, as I just can't hold interest in the magical, fantasy stuff.

    11. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Yes, but it's kind of hard to describe. The characters I've created for them are originally from Earth but now reside in a small town in the sky (and no, my story is not based on Avitar). The town is hidden from all but those who are meant to find it; some who search for the city cannot find it, while others who are not actively searching for it stumble across it by chance.

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

Fantasy world with an outwardly human appearance. The denizens of the town are mostly human, though there are some non-human residents as well (see below). The people are unusual; some of them are modern people, while others are from odd time periods and places (one character lived in depression-era Tupelo, Mississippi, another was a member of the Portuguese royal court, and third comes from 1970's London).
Rules, morals, laws, and social norms are the same as for the human world, but they are enforced differently due to the diversity of the populace. Residents live in human-style houses, eat human food, and wear human clothes of varying styles (more on that below). Most of the citizens are poor and work menial jobs, with a small minority of wealthy citizens in the mix. Due to some citizens being from older time periods there is a high rate of disease; old diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis are unfortunately common and have claimed lives. The weather is different from that in the human world; in addition to rain, sun, wind, and snow, residents have to put up with unique weather hazards like pieces of falling sky.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
Yes. The town is situated in a heavily-wooded valley with a river, and both the woods and the river contain fantasy characters. The woods are off-limits at night due to a constant battle between angels and demons. Undead, ice people, fire people, werewolves, and several types of fairy also reside in the woods. They are benevolent but do not enter town, fearing abuse from the townsfolk. The river contains both merpeople and another breed of creatures that are transplants from Atlantis. They resemble humans and can walk among the human populace, but have gills and webbed fingers and toes.

      Do they wear different clothing?
Some do and some don't. Most of the populace is poor and thus citizens wear what they can afford. They also tend to stick to clothing that fits whatever time period they're from; the Portuguese royal tends to wear clothing from the 1400's, for example, while the Londoner wears bell-bottom jeans and long, flowing shirts. Some of the citizens have formed a seamstress guild and make their living by sewing and selling handmade clothes.

      Are they happy?
Yes, believe it or not. The town is one of those "everyone knows everyone" types of towns, and it's virtually impossible to live there without forming close bonds with someone. Citizens offer support to one another, watch each other's backs, and help each other out when the chips are down. Each person is encouraged to maintain their own individuality and be true to themselves.

    12. Many of mine are sort-of little resin avatars for favorite MMO or old-school tabletop RPG characters, so I guess you could say they have "worlds of their own"... Exalted's Creation, Ars Magica's Mythic Europe, Talislanta's Seven Kingdoms, City of Heroes' Paragon City and Rogue Isles. There are also a few that serve the same avatar function for original characters from story and gaming projects of my own. They had distinct settings in fictional form... Blackbird's First House world, Harumatsu and company's Middle Kingdom, Oracle and the other machines' Ruined City, and so on... So I supposed they count as well even though I've never been big on writing about or role-playing my dolls per se.

The worlds themselves vary wildly, and I do tend to dress and equip the doll avatars to match their original source as closely as I can... Palrah-the-Akando dresses a lot like Palrah-the-CoH-character and carries a pair of swords as close to the original's weapons as I could get. I made Sjhan-the-Dreaming-Shiwoo's outfit and traveler's bag to match a drawing I made many years ago of Sjhan-the-Talislanta-character. Kareyeru-the-Miyu was painted to match a picture of Kareyeru-the-Exalt and has custom blue-on-blue eyes and the same indigo hair. That's just a natural extension of wanting physical representations of those individual characters as far as I'm concerned. It's the nature of the beast.

As for being happy... My dolls are in the "just dolls" camp. They don't get to have opinions... As the human, that's my job.

    13. As I haven't opened my first doll yet, the world is still forming. It has three "levels" based on scale. Two of them connect to each other more than to the third. The most isolated is MSD sized adults and younger teens, who live in Ireland. So for they are all OT, but Resin Soul and Bobobie will change that. It's a mix of our world and fantasy. The second one is 1/6, where the fantasy influence will be strongest. (How else would I explain the planned anthro frogs?) There will be a mage, a dragon, and three strongly based anime characters with special powers. I also have two looser anime characters planned. The third level is 1/10 to 1/12 scale. This will consist of small enough for a dollhouse imps elves and tiny anthros. They can cross easily from their home level into the second one. The clothing, like the world, will be a mix of fantasy and reality.

    14. My dollies are just starting their own little world. Right now their world seems to revolve around their house and the new random housemates I keep choosing to add in. Hehe. But all of them have some type of special power though and their own sense of what they call "style"

    15. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
My dolls just joined an already-existing fantasy world of mine that, if it were put into text, would rightly be called a Mary-Sue self-insertion cross-over fanfic of absolute terribleness. I enjoy it, but I know better than to share.;)

Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?
Not only is it a whole different theme, it involves trans-dimensional/inter-reality travel and lots of it, so it goes wherever and whenever I want it to.

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?

Yes, quite a range of them. Vampires, elves, ghosts, mutants, humans living in mechanical bodies, and so on.

      Do they wear different clothing?

They all dress befitting their personal style, such as Shuten Douji, who is a 461-year-old Shugenja, wears traditional Japanese clothes, and Emily, a ghost who died on her wedding day in the 1890's wears a period wedding gown.

    16. I am unsure of the world my dolls live in yet. right now I only have a stubborn lord and a sweet child. They don't have much else going on yet and their world is only just forming. It mostly revolves around their house though and how they interact with one another. They have their own style each, pretty much wear whatever they feel like wearing. I hope that they develope more as time goes on.

    17. Do your dolls have a world of their own?
Is it like a miniature version of the human world or is it a whole different theme?

My dolls characters exist in a fictional urban fantasy (or scifi-horror...whichever you want) world that the setting for my drawings and writings. I guess it's their own world, cause I obviously don't live there lol

I don't bother to recreate this world for my actual dolls. I'd need a giant warehouse and a million dollars and the rest of my life to even try....Someone needs to make me props! lol
I do have tentative plans to make my Chibis (Pukis and one Brownie that are miniature versions of my bigger dolls XDD) a couple sets. An bachelor apartment, occult store and a coffee shop would be the most awesome things ever. EVAR!!

Do they have fantasy characters in your world?
They are the fantasy characters! Mostly vampires and angels, with some witches, elves and other fae and demons mixed in. I don't think I actually have one human doll in my whole group....

      Do they wear different clothing?
Oh, this is a tough one. My characters are all pretty old, so the dolls can represent them at any time from the dawn of time (the angels), the 19th century (when Alex was born), present day and 300+ years in the future when the actual comic takes place; and everything in between. And at least a couple of them after that 300+ mark. Clothes are hard. Very, very hard.....There's not a lot out there that resembles what I want, so most of them just wear current fashions >.<

Except the younger versions of Alex, which are representations of a certain time period. So the kiddles wear back-in-the-day fluffs and for the most part they all have acceptable clothing. For the most part.....
      Acceptable for me anyway.

    18. My dolls (Excluding my obitsu) have their own world but specifically live in one country called Irrigatsu. I know all the buildings, places they go, the different types of people that live in each province/ town, religions, past etc. Its currently spanning over 6 generations, with my first two dolls being the starting couple ^^ The central race is human, but the family I focus are elves, then i have amanthro races, fairies etc. They wear medieval kinds of things, sometimes Asian ones... but the generations change it all the time so there isnt really as set dress code, 4th gen is all gothic circus stuff in places...

    19. Yes, I have two different worlds that my dolls exist in as characters.

My Super Gems (SD-sized) and Teenie Gems (Tinies) live in a fantasy dystopia. There are some fantasy tropes mixed in, but it's mostly a low-fantasy setting with bioengineering. Many of my characters have either been experimented on to add non-human traits (hooves, horns, etc), or are technically non-human (people engineered from birth to be capable of flight or hypnosis/subconscious control of humans, wild scorpion-tailed sirens, etc). In addition to my doll characters, the world is populated by 'monsters', some of which are bioengineering projects gone feral, while others are natural sentient beast races. There's a lot of politics happening between different classes (the 'high' classes occupied by scientists, natives and traders, the 'low' classes full of immigrants fleeing war in bordering countries), and many of my characters get dragged into that.

There's definitely a distinct clothing style involved - it's got elements of punk (asymmetry, ragged edges, contrasting fabrics), but without as many 'unnatural' elements (no zippers, only wooden fastenings, only natural fabrics, limited colour palette). It's a bit limiting, really. I'm probably going to have to make most of the outfits myself, since there's nothing really fitting for sale :sweat

My Rosettes (MSDs) have a different world. They're Victorian-era schoolgirls in a wealthy boarding school. They don't really have an over-arching plot, my play style with them is more about exploring their personalities, personal growth and friendships. They don't wear Victorian clothing though - their school uniform is white linen pants, shirts and jackets. I've always been a bit skeeved out by how fetishised schoolgirls are in popular media, so 'traditional' schoolgirl uniforms just weren't going to work for me :XD:

    20. Do your dolls have a world of their own? No, my dolls are more or less fairy like little people :) I have a gnome (who'se a princess with a giant attitude) an elf, a succubus, a ghost and 2 more or less human type girls that are just miniature humans :)

Do they have fantasy characters in your world? Well yes, aparently they do XD it's more or less like I have added fantasy and fairytale elements to our own world.

Do they wear different clothing? Not necceceraly different, my princess wears rococo inspired dresses and one of the human girls wears 50ties inspired dresses, the other human girl and the ghost girl wear more or less Mori style. I guess it's all inspired on our own clothing but with a hint of fantasy mixed trough it :)
