  2. Dollshe Craft and all dolls created by Dollshe, including any dolls created under his new or future companies, including Club Coco BJD are now banned from Den of Angels. Dollshe and the sculptor may not advertise his products on this forum. Sales may not be discussed, no news threads may be posted regarding new releases. This ban does not impact any dolls by Dollshe ordered by November 8, 2023. Any dolls ordered after November 8, 2023, regardless of the date the sculpt was released, are banned from this forum as are any dolls released under his new or future companies including but not limited to Club Coco BJD. This ban does not apply to other company dolls cast by Dollshe as part of a casting agreement between him and the actual sculpt or company and those dolls may still be discussed on the forum. A more interesting name than BJDs?

    1. I mean BJDs... sounds like old men's long underwear, or maybe a cheap brand of children's tennis shoes. .....and Dollfie just sounds silly. So what do you think, what should the dolls be called? Is the terminology too entrenched to be changed? I would vote for "Nefer" which means both good and beautiful in ancient Egyptian, or possibly "Seraphim" to borrow a term from this site.

    3. I don't think either BJD or Dollfie sound silly. Call a thing what it is-- "ball-joint doll" if you're into syllables, or BJD for short.

      You and your friends are welcome to make up any private little play-names you want, to use between yourselves, if you think the real name is too silly. But if you ever want to refer to these dolls with the rest of the world, or search for them on the internet, you're still going to have to type the letters BJD at some point.

    5. I mostly use the term "doll" when talking to other doll people? But I will say "Asian Ball-Jointed Doll" if I'm answering someone's inquiry as to "What is that?" in my arms. :P

      I'll only really use the ABJD/BJD shorthand if I'm making a comment about the dolls in general on a forum or the hobby in general. And usually only in text.

      Otherwise, it's "doll" in the spoken word, with occasional "Asian Ball-Jointed Doll" as an answer to an inquiry.

    6. The first time I said the letters "BJD" to my friend, she thought it stood for "blow-job doll". No lie. :doh

      I usually say "BJDs" (as in the letters) or just "dolls".

    7. The problem with using 'Nefer' in particular in the doll world is that a lot of people will think of Nefer Kane.

      The problem with using any term, in any group, that isn't already in use, is that no one will know what you're saying because there's already jargon in place. It's very difficult to 'replace' words like that, if it doesn't happen organically then it's not going to happen at all. People are just too used to the terms that everyone knows.

    9. I get what you mean... BJD is kinda a groudy word. I'm a synesthete (a person who's senses are combined. ex: I see words as colours) So, BJD is a gross word in my opinion.

      I call them specialized mobile jointed humo-andronic friends.
      For the heck of it.

    11. While I'm okay with the name BJD (not my favorite word but it's okay) or just dolls, I like umu-dolly's idea. the name's just so fancy, i love it!

    12. I don't see anything wrong with calling them what they are -- BJDs. Not everything needs a flowery name. Sometimes simple and descriptive is best, and this is one of those times.

      Incidentally, since "Dollfie" is a trademarked term, it would be sticking around whether you think it sounds silly or not, regardless of how much effort you put into trying to convince the doll hobby at large that it's "silly" and shouldn't be used.

    14. These things either evolves in an organic fashion, as Anneko said, or it doesn't happen. Over ten years of use by tens of thousands of owners? it is pretty standardized terminology for a niche hobby. It's like deciding you don't like the name twitter and that you will now call it gadabout, nobody will understand you. What's the point of communication if you can't agree on what you call anything?

      To other doll owners I refer to my dolls as "dolls" or "my crew", to friends outside the hobby I call them "those giant scary dolls I have", to strangers I call them "resin ball-jointed dolls", in writing I go to "BJD", it's the shortest term. I only use Dollfie when referring to Volks dolls, the combo of doll+figure from back when they were only making 27cm, & they carried it over to the resin dolls.

      I suppose you could uncombine those and use "doll figure".

    15. I never thought to much about the word BJD, When talking about my doll I use his name and most people I know, well they know what he is. When asked I respond that he is a ball jointed doll. While I think there could be a more interesting word for this hobby I think that BJD works just fine, and why bother fixing something that is not broken.

    16. When talking with people outside of the hobby I just tell them they're "resin dolls". It's easier to say and remember than some quibbling point about shape of articulations and generally I can compare them to resin figures and statues.

    17. "Ball-jointed doll" is a nice descriptive name, so I don't see what would be gained by coming up with a more "interesting" name. You'd ultimately still end up telling people that it's a doll with ball joints, so I fail to see how the actual name isn't doing its job.

    19. When I started this thread yesterday, I wasn't really sure I would get any replies at all. Thank you all for your very interesting opinions. I agree with Anneko that is not likely that the term will be changed. Certainly not simply because I do not care for it. However, I would like to point out the imprecision of the terms BJD and ABJD , there have been ball jointed dolls made for centuries. An "Asian ball jointed doll" could refer to any doll made in Asia made of any material at any time in the past. I guess I just wish for a name as beautiful and unique as the dolls themselves. I LOVE Umu-Dolly's term "mobile jointed humo-andronic friends" but if I were the Grand Poobah of the Universe I believe I would instate Shirayashi's idea of "Articulated Customizable Enthusiast" dolls, or ACE dolls as the formally recognized correct term, because it goes right to the heart of what is unique about the dolls. But, alas, since NO ONE has nominated me as Grand Poobah of the Universe, I expect we will go right on calling them BJDs. :) Though how about "Modern Asian Dolls- Customizeable and Articulated Toys" or MAD-CATs? ;)

    20. I never actually say "Bee Jay Dee", It's always "Ball-joint dolls", or "Resin children", when I talk about mine specifically. When I'm speaking of them to someone outside the hobby I call the "Asian Ball Jointed Dolls" or Super Dollfie and then explain the whole shebang. They are what they are. The more interesting names come in with the brands and models. They are still technically dolls with ball joints... so, I think you're stuck with it.

      Although, "horseless carriage" didn't stick with what we now just call "cars" so maybe you can still hope! :D
