A question for fantasy skinned doll owners?

Jan 22, 2013

    1. So, the doll I'm buying has blue skin, and I had a thought pop in my head. It's an opinion question, so just share your thoughts, please!

If you have a doll with unnaturally colored skin, do you not buy them clothes in that color?

    2. I briefly had a blue-skinned BBB Sprite, and I don't think I intentionally avoided blues for her, but I found that she looked better in purples and whites. That said, I've had really pale white skinned dolls that I put in whites and creams all the time! I think it's a matter of taste and which shades of the same color you're working with. Darker blues might really pop on light blue skin.

    3. Sometimes. It depends on what I want their clothing to do for them. I have a Garden of Dolls Nabiyette in the BBB original 'Lilac' color. It's a grey with purple undertones. Making her LOOK purple is nearly impossible, I've only done so in photos once, when doing a photo shoot at sunset. So I tend to dress her in shades of purple, as it helps bring out the purple tones in her resin. I have WS dolls that I intentionally dress more in silver, grey, and white than anything else and spend forever hunting fabrics for. I have another WS doll that I think is going to wind up wearing more dark colors because he just looks so GOOD in them. When I eventually get my blue boys they'll dress in silvers, greys, whites, and dark blues and blacks the most. Pink dolls, when female especially, can be WAY fun to dress all in pink. Green dolls are fun in shades of blue mixed with greens. But really, it all depends on the character the doll is meant to be and what I want to enhance about them.

    4. I have a blue BBB Apollo and I dressed him all in blue for awhile..even hair and eyes. Now he is wearing more black and silver and that looks good too.

    5. I don't have any unnatural-colored dolls, but my close friend has a green BBB Sprite I'm very fond of-- he dresses her in outfits that look like a pack of Smarties exploded. Pastels of every color, all at the same time. Multicolored stripes, plaids, ginghams, polkadots. It looks fantastic on her. It's like a license to clash and go wild! :D

And I think he picks contrasting pastels for her vitals: yellow crimped yarn hair & pink cat-pupil eyes.
She isn't a certain type of demon or a themed character or anything, she's just a little green girl who wears lots & lots of colors.

(My friend is an avid knitter, so I think he uses that Sprite as a clearinghouse for all his yarn-binges... the loud and/or baby colors are always on sale cheap, so he buys up a ton at a time. ^^)

    6. I admire these dolls from distance, never owned one and probably will never own one however I do appreciate them. I would think that blue on blue might be a bit much unless it is the exact shade and you have a specific spot that you want to keep him/her. I really don't see blue as being any different than white on white and there are many gorgeous dolls dressed white on white however its easier to get it wrong with stronger colour than with white or cream. Perhaps looks for colours that complement blue like grey, plum or purple shades even and chocolate looks fabulous as a contrast also.

    7. I put my grey-resin Bygg, Davi, in grey outfits pretty often. With his dark-toned face-up, black hair and grey eyes, they look good on him.

My pale purple Arkose was a different story. The one time I tried a deep shade of purple on him the tone was all wrong, and it looked awful... I suspect that a dusty, less red-toned purple would have looked just fine on him, though, so it probably pays to keep that kind of thing in mind. Shade and hue is likely to matter a little more for a doll with an odd resin color than it would for one in NS, tan or BW.

    8. Well ... now that you mention it ... yes I won't dress my unnatural skinned dolls in clothes of that colour xD White skin... well yes they wear white... but my soom Trachy will not be seen in lots of red... and my soom Bygg will not be seen in grey.... I don't know why though xD I mean... bygg in grey... I dont have any grey clothes xD But I am tempted to get her some... it might look kool :3 But my lil demon is just so... RED! xD Although... she has been seen in black and red striped leggings xD opps ^^" Only because she doesn't really have any clothes of her own and I stole them from another doll xD Although... I won't put my demon in pink... unless its very pale/faded... I think it will look odd O.o

    9. I've got my (greenish)blue-skinned doll in a blue-green wig dressed in a cream-and-blue dress. No problems. I've also dressed my brown-skinned dolls in outfits containing brown, but generally, I'm not fond of brown, so I avoid it anyway when I can.

    10. I dress my dark gray RS Ju in mostly black. She's a Drow so it just makes sense, but I do think the black compliments her skin tone very well.

    11. I have a pink doll (like, pink-pink, not a normal skin with pinkish undertones), and he currently wears beiges and browns, but his final outfits will have lots of red in it. I think it looks better to be monochromatic in his case, than contrasting (I've tried greens/blues on him too, and it just... looks really bad).

    12. Depends. Sometimes the blue (or whatever color) is shaded a certain way so that certain colors wash it out or don't make it look so good. This goes for white skin and normal skin and tan skin, too.

It goes for people, who look better in certain colors over others, since it goes better with their skin and eyes and hair, etc. Certain shades of a color will look better than others.

I've got several blue skin dolls... Some look OK in certain blues and some don't... And it depends on what kind of look you are going for. Some people like a doll in similar or monochromes.

Here's my blue Mushroom Peddler Willow wearing a blue default dress--

the blue dress has more yellow-green (turquoise) tones, so it isn't matching her skin. And the faceup has colors that don't blend with the dress, so she looks OK... A bit matchy-matchy, but not really.

Here's my Kaye Wiggs Koneko is turquoise blue--

She's actually more blue than pictured... the lights really make her seem more yellow than she is. Anyway... the tail is a stronger, brighter blue/turquoise color--so there is some contrast, even if the hues are similar. And the pinks in the faceup and the wig give her lots more color.

I have another blue/green girl who doesn't look at all good in blue... It really depends on the doll and the effect you are going for.

    13. I have a green doll who's currently wearing green, but I'll probably make him a more colorful outfit eventually.

    14. The only unnatural-colored doll I currently own is a blue-skinned Kaye Wiggs Koneko. It really depends on the shade of blue, but she can wear most blues and look all right. I find, though, that I tend to dress her in pink, because it picks up the pink in her cheeks and lips and contrasts well with her skin. Blue clothing on blue skin can look a little boring.

    15. I have a blue skinned doll that I intend to dress in white since everything else about her is blue, and I don't want her to be too monochromatic. But I also have a pink skinned doll I intend to dress in blue, as a purposeful contrast. I guess I'm on the side of no, I probably won't dress them in the same color as their skin, but I guess you never know.

    16. i have a grey doll. & i find that she looks good in any color, even grey. but then, contrasting colors would look best on unnatural skin, i think. ^^

    17. I have several different skin tones in my collection and what they wear mostly depends on their character. I have an RS in the old blue and the only reason he doesn't wear blue often is because it tends to wash out his resin and makes him almost look like a very pale grey instead of blue. My grey IS wears mostly black, white and greys as his character demands that. My RS dark grey will wear black frequently. I also have a DL dyed black and he'll wear black, too. I have an RS in red, but he typically doesn't wear clothes.

Most of my coloured resin dolls are also monochromatic. My blue doll has blue eyes and hair. My grey dolls have grey wigs. My black doll has a black wig and my red doll has a (mostly) red wig.

    18. I have a purple skinned girl... I style it with light blue and lavender shade -w-

    19. I have a Resinsoul Pixiu boy in sky blue, and I dress him in this kimono that's blue with red and gold embellishments. I think the blue cloth brings out the blue resin. Wouldn't have him wearing solid blue though, it would have to have some other color mixed in. :)

    20. I have a white half doll with a pink tail. Her tail is resin, and though her human half is white, her shirt is pink.
