A Struggle with Clothes

Sep 17, 2012

    1. I bought Guy (MNF Shiwoo) a suit at my last anime convention that I attended. It included a little tie, shirt, vest, pants, and jacket. It was a pain to get on – boy am I glad I knew how to tie that tie! The pants were tight so I struggled getting those on his as well.*_* He’s been in his suit for about a month now! And I picked up a little cowboy hat that goes perfect with it, so he’s gonna be an outlaw for Halloween…and I realized that I might as well leave him in the suit since it’s such a pain to get on. That means he’s gonna be stuck in the black suit for probably over two months! Poor guy…though he doesn’t seem to mind that much…:XD:

This got me thinking…have there been any outfits or anything that has been a struggle/pain to get on so you just left it on your doll? How long did you leave it? What’s the longest amount of time that you left something on your doll?

    2. I have definitely had trouble with my dolls' clothes. The outfit that requires the most concentration and care when putting on is my Musedoll Antique Dream set.

Just by virtue of their size, bjd clothing already takes concentration to put on, and dressing a doll is never easy. At least, I've always had to move my dolls around awkwardly in order to finagle them into their clothes. Then there are the extravagant sets that are multi-layered, delicate, tight, have weird fastenings, etc.

However, I actually prefer to keep my dolls in simple clothes consisting of just a few pieces, and I will keep those on for months. The more extravagant clothes I put on when the mood strikes me, but I don't like keeping them on for too long.

    3. Anything pants related is a huge pain for my Doll Chateau girl. She has such wide hips that anything that might fit in the waist or legs won't go over her hips, if it fits her hips either it's bulky in the waist or it's really low-rise which doesn't suit her! Basically the best option is stretchy, stretchy fabrics. Dang big ol' butt!

    4. I've struggled with fantasy outfits for hours. Trying to get them to look like the company website can be a pain! Most of my dolls only need one outfit to complete their character, so I have no need to change them at all (mainly my fantasy dolls). My human dolls have more outfits, so they are changed every couple months or so.

    5. Anything for YoSDs with buttons is painful for me! My fingers aren't that tiny, and trying to get the buttons in the little slit without pulling them right off (which I've done a few times) is ridiculously hard.

I also have a boy with hooves, so putting pants on him means that I had to restring his legs. Taking those hooves off makes dressing him 100% more of a pain, because it takes about an hour to two hours to do... I'm not even joking. Maybe I'm just bad at restringing him, but yeesh... Rune is such a pain!

    6. Well, there was the MSD Dollheart loli dress with detachable sleeves and a multi-layered set of ruffly skirts that only got to be on one of my girls once before I sold it off. Was a kick for a try, but not her regular style to be worth all the work of putting it on her.

Then there are a couple of items that were sewn to be so formfitted for one type of slim mini that they are a struggle to get on any other brand of slim mini, especially since no allowances were made for some dolls having wider, non-magnetic hands. I'll probably sell those off, except of course, the ones that ripped stitches in the getting-on process!

And then there's the Japanese historical outfit that I bought off YJ! for a Dollshe I no longer own. I had made one attempt to put it on him, laid out the Heian-style ensemble -- over-30 pieces -- said "Holy crap!" and put everything nice and neat back into the bag, where they've stayed for the past 4 years! Since I now have an almost-as-tall boy again, if I can figure out how to make the starched-linen hat of that era, I may give it another try.

In general, my gang opts for very casualwear, so as long as I get the fit reasonably right, we have pieces that mix-and-match, and can be shared among several dolls. SHOES are my nemeses, however. And tying a suit tie. THAT took googling, repeated tries, and a colorful vocabulary!

    7. One of the reasons I like the Bobobie/Resinsoul 27cm dolls is because they can wear most LIV clothes and some Barbie ones. But that's not to say that they don't have their share of problems. Finding pants for my Bobobies is hard because of their slightly wider hips; I've actually had better luck with pants for a Barbie dollar store knock-off.

    8. Most slim mini clothes go on easy but there are exceptions, and ripping the seams of some 40 dollar item is a nightmare. I'm really careful but I swear sometimes these things are just not made to be put on without serious fabric-pulling. I've tried taking of the head, the hands and pulling the arms from their sockets but I wonder if I'm supposed to unstring the arms completely so I can get the garment on the torso, then shove the armpieces inside the sleeves and restore tension. I'm going to try that next time.
And you bet that means she's going to be wearing it for a few weeks!

    9. Oh, geesh, ALL clothing changes are a bother!!! I love the dolls, love the outfits (although I often can't figure out what goes where, too), and I love putting stuff together to really make it all work... BUT, actually dressing and undressing dolls...??? :sigh

I leave my dolls in the same stuff for years! (literally) And never take off heads or hands or hooves to put stuff on.

    10. Every so often, I have to remove a head... and Vince has been pantsless for a while now because he's wearing a shirt that's so long and baggy on him that it preserves his modesty, so I've kind of... let myself be lazy.

(Billy has been wearing the same outfit for almost a year, but that's because it's too cute to take off)

    11. So many shoes. Some just fit on the feet of certain dolls, and it's so hard to get them off again. Dx I usually end up accidentally pulling off a foot, and then the elastic snaps back into the leg. T___T Not being able to get shoes off means that I can't change the pants. lol.

    12. Julian's wonderful Iplehouse Musqueteer outfit. The dress shirt with the layers of frill has to be put on very carefully. Despite being bought as "Superhero", it can barely be closed over his superhero chest.

And its good that there is a vest to cover most of those buttons.

Anyways, he looks so good in it that I take the struggle to shove him into this outfit.

Auryanna is much easier...she inherited a good wardrobe from Julian's former shell. Though she has no stockings yet...those might become difficult.

    13. There was someone a couple of years ago (she appears to have dropped from the hobby), who used to regularly put her minis in Mio pants that were so tight she had to take off her boys' feet in order to get the pants onto the legs. There was a rumor going around at the time of dolls getting pressure-cracks in the legs from the tightness of the jeans--

    14. The buttons on the Dollheart Fer dresses drove me crazy. Once those were on they stayed on til they gathered dust!

    15. This outfit right here:

It takes soooooo long to lace up the corset, and then there's a belt that laces on, and has all kind of dangly bits that need to hang right. The thing is, I made it, so I have no one to blame but myself :doh

    16. Anything from Dollheart makes me insane. I love them to death (I may have a slight DH addiction), but buttons...buttons everywhere...and so tiny D: D: D:
And those little hook/eye things they use. I can never get those to hook right! Especially at neck closures. I have one tiny who's been in a Dollheart outfit for almost a year. He may never come out of it. Never...

    17. I have no problems when outfits actually FIT the doll - but WHY do FULL SET outfits wind up not FITTING the doll they are made for? I mean really - DollZone & Angell Studio thank you soooo much, NOT.
I have to redo the closure for Trey's pants (oh, & maybe put in a real zipper so he doesn't expose himself every time he sits), & I just switched Jenny's (Dollzone Yage) body so NOW her outfit buttons....
      So glad I sew...

    18. SDs are easy to dress and so are tinies but I'm always fighting with my MSD dolls! @_@ pants and shoes are a pain in the @ss and yet, they are the ones I change constantly...I only choose complicated and hard to put on outfits when I have to do photoshoots, otherwise, they stay in simple clothes.

    19. Saltcat,

I have a Chalco with hooves, so I understand your problem, to solve this I commissioned a pair of pants that have openings in both sides.... I don't know how to explain properly, but it can be dressed with out re-string.

    20. Anything I sew for my boy just appear to be a bit too tight XD but maybe it's my fault! I can distinctly remember that the first jeans' button was nearly impossible to buckle (i don't know if it's the right word) and so when I did I left it on him for a while.
But well, when I first bought a tie I spent about two and a half hours trying how it would look the best. But actually my biggest problem are stockings that keep 'falling down' when I move the joints.
And, to answer your question, I don't leave clothes on him for more then a month (or two) - it might be because I sew for him all the time or simply to save him from the suffering (or staining!).
