1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

About the marketplace? Specifying head/body only in sales?

Mar 29, 2013

    1. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but couldn't see anywhere in the marketplace to post. As a newbie, wanting to buy my first doll, and hoping to on DoA, it's very frustrating to scroll through pages of ads where folks don't specify in the title whether it's the whole doll or not, or whether it's male or female. I keep opening ads thinking it's a full doll, only to find it's just the head. Please people, be more specific!

    2. Yes, I can see where it might be frustrating. ^_^;;

They don't have a tag where it indicates it's a full doll/ body or head. Just for the basic information. There is only so much you can fit into the title.

    3. It's something you just have to get used to. Unfortunately sometimes you can't fit everything in the title alone. As for the gender, that's up to the buyer I believe. A boy can easily become a girl and vise versa. All it takes is a new body or some modding to fix that. Keep an opened mind! You might find a head that you really like. Or a boy/girl that you want to change genders for!

    4. Thing is, I have no desire to mod a doll. I'm new at this, and really not interested in gender bending or switching heads! I will mainly be using them as models for my clothing.

    5. I understand where you're coming from. As I said unfortunately you can't fit every detail in the title alone. You also, as a seller, want people to look at your item and hopefully want to buy it. Putting up the titles you see on the marketplace is probably a result of that as well. If you have a specific doll in mind try looking directly from the company. That way you know what you're looking at when you click on it.

    6. I would LOVE it if there was something to indicate whether the sale was for a whole doll or a part!!!

AND Male or Female would also be VERY useful!!!

I think you can post a request to the mods somewhere... That would be the best thing to do, I think.

    7. usually you can tell if it's just a head or full doll by price, depends from size to size. at least that how i tell usually.

    8. Excellent point! Price is a HUGE indicator! I never thought of that!

    9. But yoou'd be surprised how often that isn't so. Besides, if some people can post that it's a head in the title, why can't others? Better still, have a section for parts like there is for clothing and stuff. Although I've noticed many people ignore the proper place and just post in the dolls for sale section.

    10. If you've noticed things for sale in the wrong category I think you can report them to the mods using the little exclamation mark on the left under the post. Maybe the mods would consider a section in the doll listing info for male/female, I actually hadn't thought of that before, so it may be worth bringing up. If I'm listing just a head I usually specify that it's just a head in the listing.

    11. Except you can't, not all the time. Someone may be selling a WHOLE Soom SD doll for $150 because it's been modded to bits and it's a fixer upper, or someone may be selling a Resinsoul SD head for $200 because it has a nice faceup or a nice mod or because they want to. I consider myself pretty experienced, and I still find it hard to figure out :sweat You just don't know. And it's not always because there's no room in the title. I've seen people (who hasn't written 'head' or 'head only' in the title) write smaller titles than others. Some do have the room.

Not to mention that people specifically EDIT their titles (and the page) to remove important information. The fill in form automatically places the price in the title, and so people decided to waste an extra 30 seconds removing it. Why? Don't you want your buyer to know how much you're selling your doll for? :?

    12. Really? That's odd, I can't say I've noticed it personally but I don't understand why someone would do that, if you're trying to sell something obviously people need to know the price! There is room on the form to specify if it's just a head though, definitely, at least there has been in my experience. I guess the price is usually a good indicator of full doll or not but as you said modification, faceup etc will affect it.

    13. Her's a case in point; posted in Asian Dolls-Larger. No indication other than *possibly* the price that it's only a head.

      : OR-Doll Eris (Normal Skin) - $110.00(3/30 Price Drop!)

    14. I think that using the marketplace takes a little patience. Being a newbie, you can discover a whole bunch of dolls that you didn't even know existed and like, or you can change your mind about a doll that you really wanted because of a face-up etc. Of course, I think it's unusual to sell a single head for $800 or $1500, and I also think that new tags that state whole doll or parts would be extremely useful, but everything's up to the seller. In the end, it comes down to how the seller wants to present their item so that it sells quicker. I just stay patient, keep an open mind, and explore.

Also, I find that I can get a doll much cheaper when I buy it in parts. For example, I bought a Volks LE head with an excellent face-up for $150 and a Volks Suwarikko body in perfect, new condition for $250 dollars, and with shipping, it all cost $450. Comparable dolls are selling for $600 and up. Nothing beats that, and all I needed was patience.

    15. With that example, there's the expectation that the one looking would automatically know that that company only sells heads, that's why they didn't indicate that the sale is only for the head in the title. It's not unusual for companies to make and sell only heads that they've specifically sculpted to fit an already existing body made by another company (Migidoll and IOS as well as a slew others started out this way).

If it's a full doll that they're trying to sell with that head, the title would also have the company name of the body that they're selling with it, and also the price would certainly be higher.

I think it's a prerequisite as a buyer to actually do research on any company or any doll one is interested in before diving head-first into a sale so that you'll know what to expect when you read that title. The wiki, discussion groups, as well as the galleries and databases here are full of information on companies and the dolls they sell.

That's very lucky to find a Volks LE head for under $200. Most of the ones I've seen around have been over $500.00 (and this is why I don't bother putting Hijikata in my wish list, he's too much of a far off dream, even as just a head)

    16. I think even without knowing that Or-doll only make heads the price is a pretty big indication that it is only a head for sale, you don't get many full SDs for $110! I think once you've been on DOA a while you get to know general prices of different companies and also the gender the doll was originally released as, it does get easier! Research into the dolls you like is also a very good idea so you know what you are looking for and have an idea of pricing.

    17. This, so much this.

The seller is required to tell you everything about the doll they're listing for sale, but it is up to the buyer to do their own research as well. For example, the seller may know everything there is to know about their Soom head, but might not be able to tell you whether it'll work with the Elfdoll body you want to put the head on.

If you're looking for a full doll, the price is generally the best indicator. Few SD-sized dolls will sell for less than $100.

Don't let buying heads and bodies separately put you off. Making a hybrid isn't really modding, there are so many companies that are interchangeable, or heads and bodies from the same company that can work in different combinations. It takes a bit of extra research to combine heads and bodies that don't usually go together, (looking for neck fit and resin matches are the most basic things to look for) but the doll you end up with can be better for you than one off the peg, so to speak. My Volks Rose on an SD13 body, for example, cost around $230 less to buy head and body separately than if I had bought her as a full doll on her original body.

    18. Well, I specify in the thread title if I'm selling a head, a body or a full doll (just like the example on the thread form shows actually) so I don't see why others can't. If it's just a head it usually does get stated in my experience, unless the company in question doesn't make full dolls. To me personally it's more annoying when a sales thread doesn't have proper sales pics, I'm not going to buy a doll if it has only one tiny full-length pic that doesn't show the face properly or an artsy closeup with a wig and/or the angle obstructing most of the doll's face (or a picture that's tilted sideways!), and don't get me started on all the threads getting posted with only "img coming soon" and no pics>.>. But I'm veering off topic here^^;;.

    19. People used to be pretty good about indicating 'head' or 'body' (as well as 'b' or 'g' if it is just a body) in their listing title but that seems to have gone by the wayside in the past few years, I have noticed.

I too wonder why folks can't seem to find the room to type the 4-5 extra characters which give the shopper an important aspect of the listing, but it is up to the seller to formulate their title and in the end it is the trade-off of using the DoA market place: lots of dolls available but you will probably have to dig for the one you want.

One bit of advice, even when finding a full doll in the market place, it is a safe practice to ask if the head and body were purchased together as a full doll, or were purchased separately by the seller... I often look at whole dolls because I don't care for mismatched resin and behold! the one time I didn't ask that question and made an assumption, I got a doll whose head was three shades different than the body (and that kind of thing is difficult to discern in a poorly lit cell phone photo.)

The DoA market place is like a huge yard sale... it can be rewarding if you have patience and exercise caution.

    20. We have been going through doll marketplace threads each night to check each day's new threads for missing information and pictures. But if you happen to notice missing information, don't hesitate to use the report button (triangle with exclamation point) just below the post. :)
