Am I the only one who think company produced is enough?

Aug 29, 2013

    1. I couldn't find a good thread about my subject, but if there is, feel free to merge or delete :sweat

I have been watching the BJD community for years, and seen really amazing work of all the artists it contains.
Don't get me wrong, I would indeed be extremely sad if these artists decided to suddenly stop doing what they are doing, there really are some amazing work out there!!
But, I got to think of this when I ordered my latest doll.
She is a fullset, and although I ordered some other things for her from the company, I think she is perfect.
There is nothing I would change about her, and the things I have for her from the same company is more than sufficient.
Of course, we all play differently(;)), but have you ever had the feeling of receiving a doll and just simply thought, "this is enough, I don't want to change anything"?
When everything just have fallen into place of it's own, without modding/blushing/face-ups/sewing etc etc :)

    2. I think I would only ever feel that way about certain dolls, not all of them. I would love a full set DC Alberta. I wouldn't change anything about her. I also loved the fullset of the limited FL Ante recently, but I feel like I would want to change things up on her once in a while. :) I guess it depends on the doll? I

    3. I'm such a customizer I always tend to do my own work on my dolls, because I have character ideas to fit them into, but on a few I haven't felt that need.

My Littlefee Rachel, Selby, has such a charming faceup I haven't had the heart to redo it. Selby is going to get a gender neutral body mod, though.

My DreamHigh Studio Chibi Feilene arrived and was so utterly perfect I could not think of anything I'd want to change. Maybe someday I might, but for now she's going to keep her artist blushing.

    4. I have one older fullset bjd that it was hard for me to find unmodded with original faceup. (Unoss) But I still want to sand her seams, blush her body and occasionally change her out of the outfits that were made for her. (She has 3 other company outfits made only for UNOSS). I won't change her faceup from default though.

So I guess even with a grail, nope, there has always been something I want to change a little. Never say never though, and I think some default fullsets are really pretty left just as they are. I think there are some doll owners who don't want to paint or mod or otherwise change their default dolls at all, or even change their clothes and I admire their collections too.

In some other doll hobbies it's the opposite and people ask "why even buy fullset limited doll if you are just going to change it?", or "Oh, a shame to wipe a limited faceup" so there's that too, haha!
So there are many opinions and we should do what is uniquely right for our own personal collection, I think. ;)

    5. Only with certain dolls...For awhile I thought my Resinsoul Song' faceup was perfect and I bought a wig to accent it and everything...But now adays I look at him and well...I want something different. Similar but with some gloss....I might see if someone can re-do it more to my tastes.

    6. I don't really like fullsets myself, because I like to customize my dolls. You know, make them my own. It so happens that I'm bad at practically everything doll-related. I can't paint, I can't sew and I'm too scared to mod, so if I want to change anything, I have to give a customizer my plans and let him/her do it for me.

So really, I'd hate it if suddenly all artists would disappear. But it may be that I'm a little bit biased in this regard, 'cause I am an artist too and would hate it if I had to close shop ;).

    7. Yeah, no....I tend never to buy dolls for their faceups or fullsets. Of the LE fullsets I've got only one retains his original faceup (and I changed the eyelashes so it's not 100% intact) and I keep eying him thinking it's time. One of my "grails" was Volks Michele, and though I'd have taken any version and it didn't need to be a fullset, I did end up getting a like-new fullset. He sat around for a few days in his outfit, and then I packed it away never to be seen again, wrestled his eyes out, wiped his faceup and gave him a whole new look. I've taken off three Dollmore LE's faceups and I'd do it again! lol I love customizing, I'd be really bored if I couldn't do it myself. And I also love the artists out there, because they make everything so much more fun to look at!

That's not to say I don't appreciate what the companies do. They're very talented artists in their own rights. I'm just a hands-on person. "Playing" for me is customizing.

    8. It depends on the doll. I love trying to match a doll to my vision. Sometimes it means a full makeover, sometimes it means very little (if any) work needs to be done.

I currently have two dolls with company face-ups and the eyes they shipped with. One of them still wears her original wig as well. I still have their original company outfits too, though they don't really ever wear them.

Of the two LE fullsets I've ever bought, both of those dolls ended up very, very different from their original look because their original look simply wasn't satisfying for me (it was also the only way to get said dolls).

    9. yep~ my Crobidoll Daydream Lance is somewhat like that. I received him with nothing but his default faceup but it's so perfect I just can't wipe it.... otherwise... I like to change my dolls a lot so just getting a doll with one outfit for the rest of its life... I don't know. Not even my off-topic dolls (MH, Azone, Pullip) stay that way...

    10. I have seen soooo many fullset dolls that I would love to have, as is! Partially because it's all said and done, partially because they look perfect. But I also like the idea of having a unique doll. I have an overactive imagination and it seems just wrong to go with something already set up for me.

So I'm torn haha. I have 3 off topic dolls, 1 of which so far I haven't changed a thing about her. I got her because she was OMGPERFECTANDSOPRETTY and I still like her but I'm not drawn to play with as much as the previous 2 (who only have different wigs for now). I feel like I may either want to sell her or change her up but I'd feel sad not seeing her perfect, beautiful dress being used anymore, especially since I can't find anything remotely like it elsewhere :( It's so frustrating!

    11. I like to customize my dolls, but then, I don't really buy fullset anything. If there's an option to get a blank doll, I buy that one instead of the one with all the bells and whistles.

    12. I was too afraid to change anything with my first boy until recently, and my 2nd boy was secondhand, but my girl was pretty darn perfect with her company faceup. :) The only thing I changed was the size/color of her eyes. She's a Doll Love Thea.

    13. when i got my first BJD Julian-he wasn't a fullset or anything special, just came with a face up-i got him a T-shirt, wig, pants and boots, and i thought that was an amazing look for him, kinda country boy type. I've made him cosplays and clothes since then, but i still love that look on him.

    14. Th reason why I like BJDs is because I create them my own way. There is not a single doll I have gotten that stayed with the default looks...the only thing that I'd keep is the face up(I only liked the face up of 2 dolls, the rest i hated or changed) but eyes/wig/outfit/etc is always changed

    15. I have a lot of dolls with default face-ups, but with full sets, usually something gets changed. I almost always get new eyes, especially if the company sends them with acrylic eyes. Out of 27 dolls, only one is 100% default and that's my Momocolor Flower Candies Pink. Her eyes/wig/shoes/dress/face-up are all perfect, and I doubt I'll ever change anything about her.

    16. Nope! I've only bought one fullset ever (RingDoll Shao), and I sort of regretted it. The outfit made no sense for his character, I hated the faceup (It was so bland and sort of orange toned), the eyes weren't right for him and he just didn't feel like MY doll. After that experience, I won't be buying another fullset. That's not to say they can't be beautiful, I've seen some really gorgeous fullsets! They just aren't for me. I may use one or two pieces from a set, but that's it. Not worth the extra money. I like to do my own faceups, make hybrids, blush, tattoo, sew, piece together outfits from different companies, etc.

The closest I've gotten to being happy with a doll straight out of the box was on a secondhand doll I bought. I intended to wipe his faceup and redo it for my character, but when he arrived, I realized the faceup was great in person and he was perfect as he was. He's the only doll I own that I did not do his faceup.

    17. Since most of my dolls are bought as base dolls from the company without faceups for a specific idea in mind, I usually have to put a bunch of work into them before I think "This is it!", but even then, my dolls generally still periodically go through wig/eye changes, and most recently my favorite 90% complete doll got a new faceup because his old one was fading and chipping away. So in that sense, I don't think any of my dolls are ever really going to be 'done. done.'

However, there are a few fullset dolls that I am head over heels for that I probably won't change much, if anything at all, when I (hopefully one day eventually get them). But my idea for them are more for display pieces as-is than my current dolls.

    18. I would love the male SOOM Fog Elf fullset, BUT i'd probably end up buying him a second wig or pair of eyes..
I think that's the only doll i've found so far that i wouldn't want to customise a lot.

    19. I have a mixture of both. I have three Ringdoll grown boys I bought as fullset as I just loved the way they looked. I also have others with just the company default makeup and another that is a hybrid with a custom faceup. I also have two blank heads about to get custom faceups as they are very specific important OCs for me. So I like both and think if you like a certain look there is nothing wrong with getting a fullset. There are some great fullset dolls out there and they may just suit your character and it's not like you can't change their outfit whenever you want to. I say go with what you like and don't worry to much about others opinions:)

    20. TBH, most fullsets will have something about them that I don't care for. I think the only one I've seen where every single thing was just perfect was with SOOMs centaur Aloa. Wig, outfit and everything just completely came together that time. But all in all, I think what's so attractive about BJDs is that you have so much freedom to experiment.
