It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. An Alice In Wonderland Theme Brewing in Companies

Jan 3, 2015

    1. Is it just me or are a lot of BJD companies late 2014 to now 2015 are creating dolls that are Alice in Wonderland themed? I seen several companies announcing dolls that will be released this year or are already for pre-order and they are all in that general theme.

Will Alice in Wonderland be the new trending theme for BJD companies this year?*_**_**_*

    2. New? Lolitas and BJD companies have always had a fascination with Alice in Wonderland ^_^

    3. I've seen older ones that were related to the theme. It's just the last few months it seems that many of the BJD companies are all simultaneously coming out with them.

    4. I need examples. Alice is always the most popular theme so I have not especially noticed anything myself.

    5. I think Alice is a cliché theme that gets returned to again and again... and now maybe all the hoooo-haaa about the Tim Burton film has finally faded from people's retinas they feel it's safe to dig it up again? I haven't noticed it more than at any other time myself though.

    6. Alice is also public domain so they wouldn't have to pay for the rights as they might for Wizard of Oz.

    7. Alice was a huge trending theme roughly 3-4 years ago, but it was kinda understandable in the aftermath of the Tim Burton film, and considering that it started to really pick up in the year of the Rabbit, and everybody wanted to incorporate Alice's White Rabbit. It tapered off gradually in the last two years. I really-really hope that they do something new this year instead of rehashing Alice-themed stuff again. There are so many other public-domain themes they could try.

[also, my secret hope that one day cyborg/mecha/android will be the year's theme...that had a little surge in 2012ish, but not enough to make us get sick of seeing it coming up again :) At least in my case. Unlike Alice, which I cannot look at anymore.]

    8. Like others have said, Alice in Wonderland has been a consistent theme for years. It comes from the strong lolita influence on this hobby. Lolita seems to like AiW, so it carries over. They had AiW dolls back when I started the hobby 10 years ago. Although at that point it was goth-flavored AiW, but still.

Trends come and go, but some things seem to have real staying power. Steampunk seemed to enjoy a run in 2014. I'm hoping that trend continues, and maybe even evolve into cyberpunk/cyborg type stuff. I'm with Smaug. I'd love to see more cyborg sculpts!

    9. I think this more people like the world of Alice. & some character of it are so original. I will like to see the red queen like a sexy dressed red & white dressed. With their card vallet :) They have the disney film last years & the "once upon a time in wonderland" serie. More thing about it.

    10. There's an old thread about the previous peak in AIL interest:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php/139655-Alice-in-Wonderland-and-dolls
The last - and only - Volks Dolpa in New York City was based on that theme, with dolls based on the Hatter and the Red Queen.

It was mostly shown with mini and large dolls at that time, but since then the makers of tinies and anthros seemed to pick up more on it and keep it going. I've seen pure Alice, goth Alice, dark Alice, steampunk Alice, lolita Alice - and a slew of Cheshire cats, of course, thanks to Pipos. And the occasional "door"mouse. The Mad Hatter, oddly enough, stays pretty close to the traditional or Tim Burton interpretation. I guess in their cases (Alice and the Hatter), the limited basic style of costume is the easiest way to indicate the character. But Smaug's idea of a cyborg would be a fascinating interp for the Hatter - a mad mecha!

    11. Frankly I am starting to get sick and tired of seeing "Alice" everywhere. It's predictable and very cliché.

Unoriginal and boring for doll companies to always having to come back to it like it's the 'fall-back' idea to promote sales.

      I'd rather have something differnt.

    12. Alice has been a theme for ages now... It's nice and all and I'm fond of Alice-themed things but it really is getting stale... =/ I'd rather see some new things as well.

    13. I have been tired of Alice in Wonderland since 2004 when every Gothic kid in my high school used it as the theme for their art projects. It is also the go to story for companies to base their lines on. Like Soenatte, I am ready for something new and off the wall different. Like African folklore or something...

    14. Yeah, I wouldn't say it's brewing. At this point it's more like: it brewed, got cold, then got reheated, got cold and reheated again.
I'd have to do some serious digging to figure out what came first in the BJD Alice trends, but finding the info on DoA is not impossible.

    15. Instead of getting all bent out of shape about The Alice Annual I like to think of it more as a BJD tradition. A sign that a company is doing well financially and moving up in the world. Its kind of like a right of passage. Its optional but a nice little ritual.

    16. Hummmm. I haven't been paying too much attention to what any trending themes might be. I know some folks can be tired of any one theme, but I really like AiW as a story. It would be neat if you could list some links! One thing I have not seen is a caterpillar, but some cats and rabbits and the human characters. I haven't seen Tweetle Dum or Tweetle Dee either. It's always fun to see everyone's interpretation of the characters.

Android or Cyborg dolls would be neat too. Personally, I really like to see Pierott dolls even though I would never have one for myself. I just really like to see them.

    17. LOL! Doll Chateau would be perfect to make Tweedle Dee and Dum dolls!

    18. I'd say the Alice in Wonderland theme is a little overdone, but I personally enjoy seeing how each company interprets the characters. I especially like seeing the various Cheshire Cat dolls that pop up. It's fun looking at how a sculpt pulls off a crazy grin!
I would love to see dolls of the less popular characters be created. Like the Bandersnatch or the Jubjub Bird. I'd really like to see a caterpillar doll too, maybe even one that's more of a caterpillar naga, with a top half of a human and the bottom half of a caterpillar. x3

    19. I think a lot of companies have done really gorgeous Alice inspired releases, I'm just saying it's not new.
Saying it's a recycling trend isn't a bad thing, it's what happens when things are perennially popular.

I love the recent Alice dolls made Peak's Woods. I don't think the pictures do them justice, they are so perfect.

    20. As much as I adore the literature and Disney film for Alice in Wonderland I also feel sick of that theme being used so often (and not just in dolls, but almost everything and anything else). I have only seen one Wonderland-themed doll that was classic-looking Alice from the original illustrations done by John Tenniel and the rest are just somewhat relevant, but barely. Mostly just overly frilly dresses and such *sigh*. I wish there was a true homage with a somewhat psychedelic twist, but I suppose it's whatever sells.

Although, I'm definitely not saying that it isn't neat seeing the different interpretations of Alice, I just see a lot of the same thing most of the time and I kind of wish there was something more true to the books. Also Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum dolls would be neat to see!
