1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Anime Style Dolls and Difference

Oct 25, 2014

    1. I am just wondering, I know Volks is one of the oldest BJD's and so is Obitsu. I own 2 Obitsu's and want to one day get a Dolfie but I am just wondering what is the difference between Volks and other anime doll styles. I know Luts has there own line of anime looking dolls. Are they any better or different and it what ways. Just curious is all if it is worth investing in a Dolfie or just the luts, or if there is another brand I should look into.

    2. The main difference between Dollfie Dreams/Obitsus and the other companies (Luts, AS, etc) with anime style dolls is their material - the former are made of vinyl, and the latter of resin. Since it looks like you already own a variety of vinyl/resin dolls, I'm sure you're already aware of their posing differences and the pros/cons of their materials.

There is no "better" and nobody is going to be able to tell you that one is worth more than the other investment wise unless you have concerns over weight and posing ability (unless you're going for resale value, in which case the licensed character Dollfie Dreams are going to fetch higher aftermarket prices, but they are also more expensive in general). This is a highly personal opinion, so it's your choice ultimately. Do you like xyz doll? Do you like xyz doll's material? Is xyz doll within your price range? Get xyz doll.

    3. Thank you for this. I wasn't sure what the main difference. I knew about the vinyl and Resin but just wanted to make sure that was the main thing besides the company name. So it all comes down to personal choice and what you like. Thanks I was thinking that was the answer.

    4. (I love your avatar Redfrost!)

As stated, yes, it is pretty much up to personal preference. And yeah, of course - material too.
They each have their pros and cons in my eyes.

Vinyl dolls are light, pose very well (apparently) and they look so pretty! But they stain so easily and they can be very expensive, compared to resin dolls.
But resin dolls do not stain in the same manner or as easily (or it can usually be fixed easily, compared to vinyl dolls). So it depends if any of that is a problem to you.

If you have not seen SQlabs dolls, I recommend you to take a look. Their heads are very pretty and, in my opinion, offer a better variety than volks DDs.

    5. (Thanks I love Garak)

I had never seen the SQ dolls before and they are gorgeous I might just go with one of them on my next purchase.

I am one who rarely changing their dolls face or hair so I don't notice the staining that much so it doesn't bother me a bunch.

Vinyl may not be as poseable I have that problem with my Obitus they are more stable but they have plastic joints do break from time to time (recently converted my Obitsu boy to elastic).

    6. (Same!)

Yes, I have heard about part breaking or having to be replaced with Dollfie Dreams too, but I suppose that is just as with resin dolls - you will have to resting at some point, if you play with them a lot.

I have noticed that I do not change the clothes around on my dolls that much either, but I would still like the option to and not have to worry about them being "ruined".
      - But good for you! I wish I could feel like that towards staining!
I do not know how much Obitsus differs, but I have heard that Dollfie Dreams do, generally, not yellow with age as resin dolls do. So there is another pro I do not think I mentioned.

SQlab heads are made to fit and match (skintone wise) Dollfie Dream bodies (obitsu too..?) as well as to fit and match SD resin dolls. So you have an option to go in either direction there!
