1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Any doll owner lnto into the higher end of the boardgame hobby as well?

Feb 28, 2014

    1. Anyone here into higher end boardgames?

I feel like it's much safer asking this question here in this safe environment instead of the other way around. I don't want to deal with the "ew, creepy" "are you a boy or girl?" blablabla and other such ironic comments from the majority of the other niche hobby.

Anyway, let me start by paraphrasing someone else: the public is aware that there exists far better wine, far fancier clothes, much more complicating computers than what's available in a retail store. Unfortunately there are some things that aren't widely known information. The public would be totally oblivious of the existence of higher end dolls beyond barbies. BJD's have an audience so small that it is invisible to mainstream media and public knowledge.

The same thing is true for boardgames. Have you ever thought "oh dang, what are they playing over there? Monopoly?" Probably not (at all). You're probably aware of Monopoly, Clue/Cluedo (nostalgic favorite), Risk, checkers, candyland and other such boring examples. Basically, just like bjd's, there is a whole new world to discover hidden in the internet. People in europe invented boardgames with revolutionary new ways of playing which sparked global inspiration to make better new boardgame concepts. (of course, that means there's going to be a lot of copycats and more new low quality products that is not unlike the bjd market too).

I asked the first question out of curiosity. Hehe. I hope it isn't too offtopic. But if it is, I have these suggested questions too:

Does any of your dolls play with boardgames?

Do you disagree that the bjd hobby is unknown to the average random stranger you meet?

Is having two very niche unknown hobbies good for your health?

Is this topic offputting or uninteresting to you? Which is fine, of course. A niche hobby is niche hobby. :?

    2. Me and my dad play a lot of non-mainstream boardgames and this thread has just given me the idea to create miniature board games for my doll! (when he arrives (I'm a newbie... so technically I'm not a doll owner yet)) I really love making little props.

I guess BJDs are boardgames are things that are not really put together but I don't see a reason why not. Having unknown hobbies is awesome! Well, apart from the struggle to find others in real life to enjoy them with..

    3. *high fives*
Welcome to DenofAngel, Alice! That idea sounds pretty awesome. It's both practical and creative in expressing more than one hobby for everyone to see! I see you are interested in Luts dolls. (goodluck! I hope you can get yours soon!). Which game are you interested in miniaturizing?

It's cool that your dad plays with you. I actually been playing the awesome games by myself, haha. I'll be enjoying the doll by myself as well once I get mines, unless it arrives before the day of a doll meet I'm interested in.

    4. I love boardgames, although I'm not much of a Eurogamer. Resourcemanagement, which is one of the most common game aspects of a euro game is something I just don't like. Gimme games like "Last Night on Earth", "Arkham Horror", "Runebound", "Tsuro" and an old-time favorite: "Munchkin"!

About niche-hobbies: I don't think that having two niche-hobbies is better for your health than having any other hobby. It's healthy to have fun and to invest time into something else than just work. I don't think it matters if that fun consists of gardening, or paintball.

To be honest, I don't even consider board games a niche hobby. Many people enjoy playing them, they are just unfamiliar with many of the titles out there. I've introduced quite a number of friends and relatives to games they never heard before and they were really interested in them and enjoyed playing them . Now, if you start talking about LARP, or tabletop roleplay, then expect to see a few raised eyebrows :).

    5. Though I wouldn't say that I'm into said boardgames, I'm very aware of them. While growing up, my best friend's dad owned and ran a hobby/gaming shop that dealt with a lot of popular and underground tabletop games and we would work on the floor for him all the time during the summer.

I would definitely say that BJD are more unknown than not to the average stranger. People seem to be curious when I even mention that I like dollhouse stuff in general. I think it's fine, though. Some people find it very interesting even though they'll never be part of the hobby and it's fun to explain to them why I love it so much.

    6. Oh my goodness, I need to stop being lazy and drive an hour to the closest meet! I been dying to play the first two games you mentioned, Silk! What is the age range of the relatives and friends you introduce? Perhaps I have been limiting myself this whole time without realizing it. Generally, I would write a public invitation for anyone to join me on social media like Facebook or something with zero responses. I suppose there are much better approaches in getting players...

I'm really fond of Police Precinct, Flash Point, Glory to Rome, and Lords of Waterdeep

And about niche hobbies: yeah, it is enjoying life outside just work! There was an engineer professor who introduced me this concept once. He said Life has 3 things to offer: Family(I'm guessing he meant raising a family), friends(which hobbies fit here too , since you can be in friendly terms with yourself), and work(this includes sleeping 8 hours for work too). He said you can't usually have all three responsibilities, you have to sacrifice one to enjoy the other two. I been agreement of that for a long while. It may apply to just the majority of people. Perhaps it's possible to pull off having all three if one has amazing time management skills and the strong will to take command of their time.

Following this three balances logic, then it's possible to go too far in any hobby before it becomes unhealthy and affecting the other two aspects of life. Okay, writing too much. I'll stop from there. hehe. But it's a cool theory, thought I might share that. :) I been mostly sacrificing sleep, by the way. *yawn* I haven't disciplined myself to enjoy leisure on only my days off yet.

Man, our lives are so short. I don't believe in YOLO at all or anything (no drugs or stupid stunts for me), but I'm really glad I finally took the plunge and bought a bjd finally. I have no luck in getting players for my boardgames. i hope it's much sooner than waiting for my toddler nephews to grow up faster*_* I'm so glad bjd's can be enjoyed solo too, haha

    7. Wow, this message wasn't here when I started writing (I'm so slow at writing down my thoughts! Ah!) Ooh! I haven't thought of working in one back when I still studied. That must have been interesting! Your last statement is giving me de ja vu. I can relate to that a lot: it is fun explaining to people. I just can't remember what I am explaining for. I guess the more people you talk to about the hobby, the easier it is to explain!

    8. That happened to me the other day too! Lol.

It was definitely fun. I mean, we weren't being paid or anything, it was more like our hang out spot and sometimes we had to ring in customers. :) I made some good acquaintances in that store.

It is fun to explain to people and see them learn about something they never heard of before with interest~
I think people are really interesting when they get really excited and into whatever they have a hobby in. It could be anything, as long as they're passionate about it.

    9. That made me smile. Gosh, I still cannot recall, but if FEELS like great memories. hehe

    10. Unfortunately, this isn't a boardgames forum, so this thread is being closed for being off-topic. It might be something to bring up for chatting, though, the next time Brigadoon is open!
