are fake eyelashes neccessary?

Oct 17, 2014

    1. I dont plan to put any on my doll... I never really liked how they look on dolls...I mean I guess theyre ok but I dont know, its just not something I feel my doll will need. Do you think bjd dolls should have them? It seems almost all of the dolls Ive seen have them.

btw I have no idea if this is the right section for this question so if not please move!

    2. None of mine have them currently. They're great for a girly look, but otherwise unnecessary.

    3. Depends on the doll. Some of them have them, some don't. Lately mine haven't been getting any because I haven't found fake lashes I like.

    4. My boys don't have eyelashes, I think it helps them look more masculine. I also recently brought a Fairyland Minifee girl off the marketplace and she doesn't have them either, I don't think most people even notice and I certainly don't think it changes her look. I might one day get up the courage to try and put them in just to see if it changes her look but might not ever bother.

    5. All of my girls have them, but I'm not sure I'd put them on boys. I think they add a "pop" to my girls' eyes but they might be too much for a male doll.

    6. All my human dolls have them, including the boys. However, on the boys, I only let a little bit peak out of the eye well. I like how dolls look with them on, but it's completely personal preference.

    7. All people have eye lashes regardless of gender (unless the person suffers from certain conditions). I believe eyelashes help soften
the staring/glaring look, they soften the eye and add natural shadows that are otherwise not there. All of my dolls have them even the males,
I prefer thicker ones because don't like painting eyeliner on my dolls (it feels less realistic if my males have eyeliner on), and again it just softens
the way the dolls' eyes look (just like they do on actual people!). I'm not a fan of bald-looking eyes in general, if I could put them on my 1:6 OT dolls
I would do so as well but it's a pain on smaller heads. However, I agree with everyone who has said that it is a personal choice, not everyone has the
same taste. Ball jointed dolls are ball jointed regardless of whether they where fake lashes or not. It's up to the individual doll owner to decide to put them on or not. (:

    8. I don't think fake eyelashes are necessary at all. But because there is a variety of lashes available, they can be another way to customize a doll. I think dolls without eyelashes tend to have a starker look, but their face up can be just as good or bad.

    9. personally I think it can depend on the face-up, most of my girls for example have quite heavily painted lower lashes so I did get eyelashes for them as I think they look odd without

I have had dolls in the past with lighter face-ups where I didn't think it was essential though

    10. ok thanks! Im a first timer for all this and Ill be doing the faceup myself so my doll is not going to have any sort of professional quality faceup on him thats going to feel off if he doesnt have lashes. Also I forgot that it will be a boy so the lashes will be even less necessary. :)

    11. They're certainly not necessary but I feel they make a world of difference. If you go to the Iplehouse site, some of their dolls have pictures with the face-up and without the face-up. http://iplehouse.com/home/shop/item.php?it_id=1603079030&nhn1=en You can scroll through his pictures and decide for yourself the impact eye-lashes make :)

    12. I have one doll with them and one doll (floating head, currently) without them. It depends on the face up as well as persona aesthetics, really.

    13. Some of mine have them, some of them don't - depends on the doll, the character, the sculpt and the face-up and personal preference.

    14. I had trouble making up my mind about this for my guy dolls and tinies. Some of the more realistic sculpts have so little eye opening space that they'd become sleeping dolls if you added lashes! You can get these upper/lower lash sets not specifically made for bjds - for reborns, I think, and the lower lashes are really short and wispy.

    15. I personally like them. I feel they ad a touch of realism to the face regardless of gender. But its personal preference really

    16. All of my dolls, both male and female, have applied upper eyelashes. I agree that they add a sense of realism to the face, and I also think it makes the doll's faceup look 'complete'. It's completely personal preference though :)

    17. I wouldn't say they're necessary. If I had a girl doll, I would like to have them on her but I've also seen it done way too over the top and it looks completely unnatural. For both of my guys, they looked much more masculine after I removed the top lashes.

    18. It's definitely depending on the owner's taste. personally I like thin blond or pale brown/gray eyelashes. My doll came with them and they look really natural on him. They don't look noticeable from front; but from side view and 3/4 view, it adds more detail and realism which I really appreciate.

    19. Depends on the sculpt and face-up style. If you paint your dolls more like a cartoon/anime character, you can get away with not applying eyelashes.

If you're going for a real person... Uh... yeah, they kinda need eyelashes. Maybe not black super-long diva ones, but since almost all real people have them, IMO dolls that are meant to resemble real people look weird without (unless they're meant to for character-relevant medical reasons). Sometimes it means you have to make your own eyelashes if you can't get your hands on those nice-looking doll ones. I send my doll heads to my favourite artists, so I normally ask them to install eyelashes that match the hair-colour - i.e. light brown ones for blonde dolls, white for white-haired dolls, etc.

(Fun fact: men actually have naturally-thicker eyelashes than women. Obviously there's variance in the population, but on average male eyelashes are thicker and longer, so if anything it's the male dolls who need the eyelashes more than the female ><. And all of my boys get them because IMO there's nothing sexier than big ol' curly lashes on a male face. They look so much more innocent and youthful.)
