Artistic Nudity: yay or nay?

Nov 15, 2012

    1. (I'm not asking to see pictures; this is a discussion question!)

Do you ever pose your dolls nude and take tasteful, artistic photos? What is your opinion of this? Do you appreciate such photos, or find them offensive/unnecessary?

    2. I've done it before but it is not something I do with great frequency. I'm not offended by it at all and appreciate it when it is done well. I have gorgeous Tan Raspberry by Asella on the way and decided against body blushing as I figured it would only be a great benefit if I were planning on photographing her nude a lot. Plus I was worried that the body blushing would become damaged with normal clothing changes. She is certainly gorgeous without her clothes on though...

    3. I think that the term "artistic nudity" is not always interpreted in the same way. I have taken some photos of my dolls nude, but also not with any frequency. When I do, I am aiming more for a showcasing of the human form as a thing of beauty rather than something that is sexualized. I guess I think of term in a classical sense.
Now, that isn't to say that I'm against sexuality in art (I love pin-ups), or that it wasn't depicted classically (that couldn't be farther from the truth), just that the first thing that pops into my head when I see "artistic nudity" as a label...is not something that is sexualized. ::shrugs::

    4. When dolls don't have their clothes on, you can definitely appreciate the artistry of the sculpt! :3nodding:

    5. I mostly agree with you. When I think 'artistic nudity' I think of a classical approach. Like you said, "showcasing the human form." I love pin-ups too, but I think that would fall more into the category of 'tasteful nudity' rather than 'artistic.' But it depends on who you ask; everyone defines things differently.

    6. I rarely do it... but...

Nude photos are good for comparing posing and joints, etc. So, I don't really care if it's "artistic" or not.

And the dolls are totally works of art, to my mind, and often and and should be shown that way--like sculptures, without clothes and stuff covering them all up!!!

    7. I can't see myself doing it but not because I have a judgement about it. I just can't see my 2 girls doing it; it's not in their makeup. One is kind of a toughie and the other is pretty introverted. But maybe that says something about me, lol.

    8. I agree, dolls are art! It's almost a shame to keep them covered!

    9. Yeah some dolls can't be convinced to pose nude, and that's okay! :)

    10. Yea. I don't take many even of my mature mini-- I only really took naked pics of my boys at box openings. But, I love seeing nude and untouched photos of dolls because it lets me see what the body sculpting and joints look like, which is important information, and because sometimes the pictures are just lovely-- the dolls may have detailed blushing that works with the sculpt, or may just be bare resin, but I appreciate the details the way I would appreciate a statue-- or depending on the staging, the way I would appreciate a painting/photograph of an artistic nude.

    11. That makes sense. :3nodding:

    12. I love it! I think part of the fun of photographing dolls is that they are objects, not people. My doll doesn't think I am any more or less eccentric for having him lie nude on fur with candy corn (or what have you). In art school, my favorite subject was nude figure. I think the human form is totally awesome, and I'm betting the artists that create these dolls think that too. It's a shame to bury all that stunning work under clothing all the time, so I'm all for them shedding their clothes once in a while... for art's sake! While I personally have nothing against nudes in a sexual context, I don't seek out that sort of thing expressed with dolls, unless it is incredibly well done. At that point, I appreciate the skill of the photographer!

    13. Being a lover of classical artwork, I adore artistic nudity. I like the idea of showing off how beautiful the human form is and what better way than to convey that with ageless, idealistic dolls that flesh out our idea of beauty? So much work is put into these beautiful dolls of ours and sometimes I feel a doll looks so different and that much more beautiful nude.

    14. I have :) I actually have no qualms whatsoever with artistic nudity-I got over any embarassment and/or squeamishness a long time ago while taking figure drawing and painting classes in college.

So-yes, I've taken 'nude' photos of my dolls and have no issues with others doing so.

    15. I say YAY!
One of my favorite things about BJDs is the fact that they photograph very well in the nude. I don't take a whole lot of art nude photos of my dolls, but I love that I can. When a doll is beautifully sculpted, why not show it off?
Can't imagine being squeamish about it, as I paid for art school by modeling for other artists.

    16. I rarely photograph them nude. And by rarely.. well I mean very rarely. I feel like I'm putting nudie pics of my children up, and I just don't like that~ ; A;

When I am selling a doll however, I'll take nude photos so the potential buyers can see what they're purchasing.

I have also seen very few photos I like of nude dollies. A lot just don't sit right with me. :3

    17. It's a definite yes from me. I don't mind nudity and I love the graceful sculpting many of the bodies come with. Although I don't take nude pictures I've sketched them naked on many occasions... I guess I might just be used to drawing naked models because of university though....

    18. i say yes to all forms of artistic nudity, be it real or dolls, a lot of them have incredibly detailed bodies so why not show them off.

gratuitous graphic nudity on the other hand is best avoided, i mean i dont mind some, the showing off of doll bodies for the purpose of being sexy like dollfie dynamite bodies and vmf50's, they are inherently sexy with their over sized 'body parts' and just posed or wearing sexy clothing is fine....and fun, its like fan service, as long as it remains solely topless, once the bottom underwear comes off it starts to get an 'ick' factor i am not 100% comfortable with

this is partly the reason i am very cautious about those who want more detailed genitalia on dolls,

    19. I don't see anything wrong with it, if it's for art and they do have some wonder sculpts out there just to be admired. All the sculpt artists do so much detail to some bodies and then they just get over looked because of the clothing. Tis a shame if you can't enjoy all aspects of the Doll :)

    20. I like artistic nudity, even with real people, when it´s not too sexual but elegant and like described in one word - art. Human body is beautiful and I like very much the beautifully sculpted dolls there are around. I don´t see my dolls as "real persons" so I don´t mind if they´re with or without clothing at home (actually, when I´m sewing it´s more easy to keep them naked to be able to model the clothes I make).

Also I think the nudity in informational form (like comparison pics of different dolls, posing etc) isn´t really even nudity at all, in the way as the purposely made nakie pics would be.

I haven´t really taken many nude photos of my dolls, partially because many of them are children characters and the sexy pose pics even of the adult doll characters are not my thing, but sometimes I just hope I would take more nude doll pics just to share the beauty of the sculpting. For example I have a stunningly wonderful old granny doll, with all the wrinkles and sagging the age gives to the body. I am not planning to post nude pics of her when get her ready, but sort of wish I would, as I just keep looking her and thinking "wow, how amazingly real she looks". Same with many other artist dolls (and also the beautifully sculpted factory dolls of course), it feels almost like a pity to cover them with clothes. Many of these dolls are such pieces of art, like a sculpture and I feel there´s no need for modesty in the same way than if it was about humans.
