1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Asked details about your doll - how do you feel?

Mar 8, 2013

    1. dear doll owners,
What do you feel when you get asked which eyes, clothes, make up etc does your doll have? Is it annoying to get asked about these details, or does it make feel proud that your artistic approach has been appreciated?

Would you prefer people would admire your doll, their story and the image you created instead of asking you anatomical questions, and feel frustrated then?

Do you prefer to write info about your doll right away when you post their pictures? Or do you feel these details take the whole fun away? Or perhaps you feel you feel fear someone will copy your doll which you would hate to happen.

Myself, I do not have any doll yet, I still occupy the waiting room. But as a newbie, I am very grateful to those owners who give the details about their dolls. That’s how I was introduced into the world of talented people and great companies. The details provided never interfere with my perception of a doll. But my friend thinks otherwise.

    2. I really appreciate it when owners don't mind giving all the details. Because if you got the knowledge why not pass it along?

    3. I don't mind giving details about my dolls either; I always write them out when I post in databases as well. xP First of all it's unlikely someone would copy something down to a T, and even if they would copy it's their loss for missing out on creating their own vision of a doll although I wouldn't relly like to see that happen given that all of my dolls are actual characters from a story.

Fact remains that giving details can also help a lot of people and can make for discovering a lot of nice companies that make wigs, eyes and clothes you otherwise would have not.

    4. I agree with Arashi Uchiha and Soenatte--I am always glad to explain where I got my dolls' eyes, wigs, clothes, shoes, faceups, and so forth. I think it's really important to give credit to all the talented people who make those things, and maybe steer some business their way! My dolls aren't embodying characters or living out a serious storyline, so I'm never concerned about having a character copied. However, I've been in this hobby for long enough that quite a lot of my dolls' things came from sellers and artists who aren't working anymore. I wish anyone who wants to find them the very best of good luck! ;)

The only time I get (a little) annoyed is when I've already included that information in the very same post that someone PMs or reply-posts to ask about. I'll admit, when that happens it just seems like the person is childishly demanding attention, instead of genuinely being interested in the information.

    5. I wouldn't mind giving details if I was asked because I usually want to ask where someone got their doll's outfit/wig/shoes/props or who did their face-up (but I don't usually ask because I think I'll come off as bothersome =_=; )
I usually put that information in the photo description or at the end of a post with pics of my doll

    6. I don't mind telling people if they ask. I've been on the asking side too... I've been searching for a very hard to find wig, so when I saw a picture that looked like just the right color, I asked. Not that it helped me find the right wig in the end ^_^;

    7. I don't mind being asked, at all! And I'll answer if I see the question, too. When I post my doll photos to places like Deviant Art, I TRY and include the details of the doll. It's sculpt and company, resin color, eye maker, size, and color, and wig maker, style, size, and color. But when uploading a LOT of images from a shoot, I sometimes forget to add that information.

    8. I am always willing to provide whatever information I have about my doll's eyes, clothes, wigs, makeup, and more. I don't think it's annoying--if someone asks, I feel that they admire the item(s) and are interested in getting something similar for their own dolls. That doesn't bother me in the slightest. I like to write down the information about my dolls when I post the pictures, in case anyone is curious--and also to give credit to artists whose work (such as their eye-making or their faceup painting skills) features as part of my dolls. I don't think wanting to know about the component parts is automatically considered not appreciating my doll--but even if it is, not everyone will appreciate my doll as I have styled her. I'm okay with that.

    9. I rarely write out all of the details as to who's worked on my dolls, what they're wearing, or their accessories because I admit I can be lazy and it's often a lot to write out. But I am more than happy to tell someone if they ask for particulars. I've had one of my dolls copied and I honestly didn't care beyond my initial "Wow, really?" response. My doll was still much better looking lol

    10. It depends on the situation for me and how they ask. If it's a case of "Ohhh, that wig is so pretty and something similar would be perfect for my doll, what is it and where did you get it?" then I'd be more than happy to answer, as that's how I've often found perfect things for my own crew. But if it's more like "OMG I WANT your doll!!! what sculpt, skintone, eyes, wig, outfit, faceup artist, extra options, etc is that??" I would be irritated. In this hobby, unless you are making or commissioning everything yourself, other people WILL have the same items. It's going to happen, especially on popular items from popular companies. But there is a huge difference in two dolls wearing the same eyes and in someone completely copying the entire doll.

Though usually if I won't answer the question, it's because I don't actually know.....I've gotten a lot of eyes, shoes and clothes secondhand or in trades or swaps, and sometimes the sellers didn't even know where the stuff came from.

When I post pictures, I usually just list the sculpt, instead of detailing everything. I don't get many people asking where I got certain pieces, so I don't feel the need to state it. I also make a lot of clothes, and do my own faceups and other work, so I feel kind of weird advertising my own work, since I don't take commissions anyway. lol

    11. I don't mind at all! I definitely feel that it is a compliment. And after being in the hobby for over a year now I realize how much there is still to learn! So if I can help someone who's just starting to figure out what companies, styles, eyes, etc. work for them I'm happy to do that. I don't think anyone would have a problem with it if we were all able to freely trust each other. If someone copied my characters then I might feel differently about it.....

    12. If someone were to ask I would gladly tell them. And I have been really tempted to ask where someone has gotten a wig or a specific face-up but haven't yet. And mostly because I am pretty resourceful and love doing the researching on my own. Unless you are buying a full-set with face-up, we are buying blank canvases. And I think it's natural in a hobby for people to inquire. I think it's the whole point of having a forum, group, meet-ups; to share information with similar minded people and be inspired.

And as far as if someone asked about my doll and general back-story, I would of course be flattered. But asking for detail specs vs. artistic concept - it's all the same to me.

I can agree that it would be annoying if a question has been specifically answered and the person keeps asking the same question; almost as if they want you to buy it/find it/figure it out for them.

    13. I don't mind questions at all... Sometimes you just come across something in photo or at a meet that would be perfect for one of your own projects, and it's not always easy to figure out where it came from without asking.

Then again, I don't consider my own dolls to be unique and special snowflakes (My crew were actually described by another collector as being "Boring weeaboo brats who all look alike" once-upon-a-time, and I'll be the first to admit that there's a certain truth to that-), so I've never been overly fussed about the whole "copy issue". If anyone ever did try to make their own version of one or another of my collection, I'd be a lot more likely to laugh and wonder why they didn't find something more interesting to do with the thing than get angsty over it, so that removes a lot of the potential anxiety over revealing sources.

Re: pictures... I rarely take or post many pictures these days, but how much information I include when I do depends a lot on WHERE the post is being made. If I'm adding the doll to a database here, or posting the picture in my dA gallery, I'll include a little more detail than if I'm just dropping it into a discussion or photo-spam thread.

    14. I really don't mind at all - I'm one of these people who likes to list everything my dolls are wearing in pictures so that other people know where to look if they like them! I'm not overly worried or concerned about copying. If someone made a complete clone of one of my dolls that would be a bit weird, but liking the same sculpt or same clothes or the same colour wig isn't a crime - it means you both have good taste in stuff!

    15. I don't mind either, it is always a kind of compliment when someone wants to know a detail.

    16. I actually get pretty excited. I love to share where I get my things, because it helps the artist get a sale, and if I use their item in a photoshoot, I obviously think they're worthy of more business! :)

    17. I love asking AND answering the technical questions! :thumbup In my photoshows, I usually list everything in 'credits' at the bottom-- for myself to remember, as much as for shopping-tips for the viewers. At meetups or in person, people may never have seen that doll/faceup/body/eyes/wig/etc. before, or they may have seen it online but never IRL before-- so answering those questions is helping a fellow collector. It may be the case that your doll has the exact eyes or hair or shoes or bodyblushing-style that this person has been seeking for years.

I'm not afraid of anyone copying my dolls, just because I told them where to get the same eyes or pants or what-have-you... There is NO way that anybody's doll would end up looking exactly like mine. Everybody's touch is different, so even the same doll with the same faceup & same eyes & same hair still looks different to me. I actually DO have friends who dress their same default-faceupped dolls in the same wig or clothes I use-- this is especially prevalent if you have "special needs" dolls like an EID, most of whom have to get all their clothes at Iplehouse.net-- and they still look like entirely different characters.

    18. This made me laugh SO hard . . . you reminded me of the time a dear and now-departed friend of mine once walked into my house, looked at my dolls, and said "Why are they ALL PREPPY?"

    19. I really liked being asked about details--clothes, eyes, wigs, faceup artists etc. I'm one of those people who is completely creatively handicapped. I rely heavily on the community, talented seamstresses and artists to bring my vision to life. I also have a TERRIBLE memory. So I tend to write all the people I've worked with and all the shops I've purchased from in the descriptions of my dolls photos. It's not worth forgetting, and if I can send extra business to the people that helped my dolls come to life then I am all the more grateful!

The idea that someone would copy my doll hadn't even occurred to me until reading some of the comments here. It just seems like it would be pretty impractical. Plus a lot of the seamstresses I have worked with probably wouldn't do an exact duplicate of a previously commissioned piece. That's one of the best things about this hobby is that even if they found the same things, the arrangement and photos and doll would probably be their own unique version of it :)

    20. If someone asked, I wouldn't mind answering, but I've bought a lot of my doll stuff secondhand, so some things I'm not sure what brand they are or where they came from. I've wondered where people got their beautiful wigs, or pretty doll dresses, and I've asked before, so I would extend the same courtesy of an answer to someone else that I'd hope for if I was the one asking the question.
Though, I don't think I'd have to worry about someone copying my dolls. ^_^;; They're not all sorted out yet, so there's not much going on to imitate. x)
