1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Ball Jointed Dolls In Comics?

Aug 1, 2014

    1. So I recently found a comic called "Neil the Horse" (which in itself has nothing to do with BJD, but bear with me) and one of the main characters appears to be a living bjd! Her name is Mam'selle Poupee, and she is several kinds of hilarious. Are there any other sources of bjd in comics that ya'll have heard of?

It's an older comic (from the 1970/80s) but I know a reprint of it will hopefully be coming out soon...She's described on wikipedia as a "living doll", but her jointage points more to bjd than a traditional doll in my opinion.

    2. That is very interesting. I only started reading comics in the 90's and never came across that one.

    3. The manga/anime 'Another' (pretty creepy series, you are forewarned of gore/horror) has a lot of ball jointed dolls in it as one of the characters' mother is a doll maker, and she herself lost her eye as a child and now has a glass doll's eye in its place.

The dolls on the show are supposed to be presented as super creepy, but I just thought they were beautiful and unique xD

    4. The manga Shounen Dolls by Hibiki Wataru is about dolls. Its pretty good and the dolls are cute.

    5. The manga "Doll" by Mitsukazu Mihara (1998-2002) depicts a world where life-sized robots called "dolls" populate the world. They look like people but distinctively act like, well, dolls. A lot of the illustrations done for this 6-volume series depict them as ball-jointed dolls with mechanical wires running through them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doll_(manga)

Case in point: [IMG] and [IMG]

Another one that comes to mind is a short 3-part anime OVA called "Le Protrait de Petite Cossette" (for those who speak French, I claim no responsibility for the name. The grammar mistakes came that way...). This has been adapted into a 2-volume manga. The story revolves around a series of cursed objects once owned by a young girl named Cosette and her family. Now these haunted objects have come to possess a young man who worked at an antique shop. Cosette has been depicted as doll-like through the short series, and during the original launch parties back in 2004, a life-sized BJD was made in Cosette's likeness as part of the promotion.

    6. Well there's the Rozen Maiden manga... There's also Angelic Layer, to which the Angels are like BJD's.

    7. From what I have read or watched, there has Another (original from a light novel and was made into anime and movie later), Rozen Maiden, Shounen Dolls, Doll and Will o' Wisp. But many of them like to display BJD and also other humanoid dolls in creepy way :( Especially in movies...

    8. In KurageHime (Jellyfish princess) there is a "doll nerd" girl!
I love this manga but she's my favourite character!

    9. I LOVE Princess Jellyfish! You can really connect with the characters. :)

    10. I had no idea so many of these existed! Keep them coming.

Would many people read mangas or comics about BJDs, because I sure would!

    11. I suppose it's possible! I ended up watching Another thanks to it being brought up in this thread, myself, and actually really enjoyed it, even if the dolls were more tangential to the story than a focus of it.

    12. For any yaoi fans out there, there's a Manga: 'Lover's Doll' which is absolutely adorable. ^^

    13. I own a 4 book manga series called "Dolls" by Kawahara Yumiko that was published by Viz Media back in 2004. I really enjoyed it back when I bought them and started re-reading them again after getting into the Doll Hobby. The dolls are referred to as "Plant Dolls" in the series since they are living, life-size dolls that need special care. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page for this series for anyone wanting to read the synopsis:

I'll definitely be checking out some of the series that have been suggested in this thread :)

@LaLince & Jobee: Oh I love Princess Jellyfish! I watched the series, but I need to read the manga (I believe I started it, but got distracted and forgot to get back to it like so many other things XD). I would to make Kuranosuke "Kurako" in doll form <3

    14. awwww that would be so cute!! wonderful idea! :aheartbea

    15. I was just about to suggest 'Dolls' by Yumiko Kawahara as well! As an obvious doll-lover, this manga is one of my all-time favourites! I can't tell you how sweet and awesome it is! It is a collection of short stories revolving around different dolls at a time, each with their unique setting, owners and story. Definitely definitely DEFINITELY recommend this one to any doll enthusiast!

Always wanted the artist to write more of the series, but it never happened. Anyway, I will try looking into your suggestions, especially 'Another', because those pictures are so cool-looking :3 This is a nice thread!

    16. Thanks so much for mentioning this series :-D I started it just the other night & I'm already done~ I only wish it had been longer :'( Leo is my favorite of the dolls :aheartbea
