Being gifted the wrong doll.

Dec 19, 2013

    1. This almost happened to me, luckily it wasn't going to work out. Since it's nearing Christmas, my mom asked me what I wanted. I told her that my number one priority is getting money for dolls. She asked which one I was getting next so I showed her. I showed her a few others that I had on my wishlist (All the least expensive ones, and one that was on the expensive side) just to show her the ones I wanted to get at some point. I found her browsing doll sites later that I didn't show her any sculpts from, but luckily she wasn't going to be able to order me one after all, even though she wanted to. I then told her that I didn't want any of the dolls on that site and then she felt relieved that she couldn't afford it.

Has this happened to anyone before? And how did you deal with it? Especially if you were never able to bond with the doll.

^^; I didn't mean to sound like a spoiled brat, but I'm a planner. I plan things. Which is why I will probably never have to sell a doll out of disinterest. If somebody bought me a doll without my help at all, I would be really happy. But if it didn't fit in with my stories or other characters, I wouldn't know what to do with them!

    2. No. I've gotten a few non-BJD's that I've not been into but I've happily returned those to where they were purchased for a swap or if I couldn't do that swapped them with someone else who did like that doll. The BJD's they asked and I was pretty specific and likely they never would have even thought to buy me anything else. I'd have just ended up with Barbies or MH or something like that instead of the BJD's I really wanted but likely I still would have been okay. I collect a lot of other dolls besides BJD's so that's often cool. The people I know most of them don't have a clue about BJD's. Unless I lead them by the hand to exactly what I want and they just hand me a credit card they're not going to go there on their own. I don't have to worry about getting the wrong BJD. I just wouldn't get any BJD's.

    3. My mom bought me a few BJD's over the years..Okay a lot of 'em because I do chores for her to earn the money for them. For my birthday last year she bought me my Resinsoul Song and this year got me an RS Bei...Both sculpts I really REALLY wanted and adored. She let's me choose, as my mom though she's also my voice of reason...She can tell which dolls I'm gonna most likely keep and enjoy and the ones I'll probably hate...I still got one doll I'm trying to get rid of that I didn't listen to her on. I learned my lesson...But anyway when it comes to dolls she lets me choose and it doesn't matter if it was supposed to be a surprise or not She knows I know my stuff with this so she lets me choose. She also let me select some of my own Christmas presents other then BJD's because she knows I know what I like...

    4. I think if someone is anxious to get you a doll but can't really afford it, you need to also warn them about recasts, just incase they think they've struck gold when they find a sculpt you like REALLY CHEAP! It would be so upsetting if that happened - for giver and receiver!

    5. I gave my husband a list of dolls I wanted and some specifics, and he went to the company site and preordered her. I was so proud! He made no mistakes! This kept me from getting a Barbie or something. :D

    6. My husband and sister are the only ones that buy dolls for me. My sister is in the hobby and understands to only get what she knows is on my wishlist, and my husband just gives me a dollar amount and has me order it so he doesn't mess up.

however! A few years ago, I had been looking at IslandDoll Kevin, making over how cute he was, in tan skin, but had no use for him. For my birthday, my sister got me a NS Kevin from JunkySpot, because he was in stock. I had NO idea what to do with this doll, but he was cute and a surprise, so I ended up writing him into my stories as a son to a relatively new character, since it wouldn't affect plotlines.....I've since sold the doll and aged him up to SD size, but what started as a random surprise doll ended up becoming one of my absolute favorite characters, and current center of my RP world. So, I think even if someone gets you a doll you had no intention of buying, it can turn out to be a really, really good thing!

    7. Your mom sounds rad. My husband always lets me pick my gifts too. I make a top 10 list and he gets whatever from it

    8. I haven't had it happen. Not sure what I would do if it did happen. If my bf wanted to buy me a doll I'm sure he would just give me the money or ask how much I needed. Anybody else I know doesn't know the first thing about dolls and if they heard I like dolls, who knows, I might end up with a Barbie lol.

    9. No. Too old to have my parents buying me dolls lol.

    10. I think if someone bought me something as expensive as a doll, I would be so overwhelmed and appreciative that I would make a very big effort to love that doll. Obviously sometimes it doesn't work out, but I think a big part of that is by the choice of the owner. (I have a doll who I didn't really connect with at first, but after a few style changes, and face-up changes he fits into my crew fairly well.) I think if someone bought me a doll I would be absolutely floored and love the doll all the more because of the fact that the doll reminds me of how much that person cares for me.

    11. I've never had anyone gift me with a doll. They've all come from money out of my own pocket. I think if someone was generous enough to buy me a doll, I'd be thrilled with it even if it wasn't a sculpt I was originally interested in. It's the thought that counts and if someone loved me enough to spend that much money on a gift, I'd be grateful for anything they chose to get me, since they didn't have to get me anything at all.

    12. What I do is save a photo of the doll to my desktop (shared family computer) and rename it to the company's name and doll's name. If it's a complicated order (like if there are choices for resin colour or options) I make a word file and move it next to the photo.

But who am I kidding! No one in my family would ever gift me a doll. It doesn't hurt to have hope, though.

    13. these two are exactly how i feel. and i've actually never disliked a doll once i had it. i sometimes think maybe i'm easily pleased but at the same time this is an expensive hobby i think i would like to be sure before dropping money like that hehe. anyway yeah i'd probably love it just because the doll was a gift and it reminds me of that person's kindness etc etc. i've loved many bad gifts before that were much cheaper and less thought out than if someone bought a doll

    14. I always tell people specifically not to buy me a doll unless it is one I have chosen. That way no one has hurt feelings and I also give people options for other things like gift cards. That seems to work for me anyway.

    15. Actually, babylove brings up a very good point. A lot of the doll sites do have a gift card purchase, so if someone was looking to buy you a doll, mentioning that sites do gift cards is a great way to make sure feelings don't get hurt. But I think if it was a surprise doll, any doll would be absolutely adored and doted on.

    16. My cousin gave me my first doll.. and he wasn't nesicarily the wrong doll... but he wasn't the right one either. Maybe I would have gotten more into the hobby sooner if I had picked him out myself?

    17. The only people who would buy me a doll are my Mom or my Husband ... and only if I ask for one as they both know I'm particular. If I do ask, I avoid getting the wrong one, by giving them the exact URL link/options to order. We're all happy with that method. :) Easy for them and no disappointments.

    18. I suppose if anyone would gift me a doll it would be a recast, because no way they would pay loads of money for a proper doll and it's kind of difficult to explain to non-doll people. ('it's just a toy...') my boyfriend understands - he used to be in the music scene - but I doubt he'd spend that much. Though if he did he'd likely let me choose - after all, ordering a random rare edition cd would be equally risky :)

I guess it'll be safe though because my family members don't know where to find bjds :D

    19. Only my husband buys me dolls, and if he got me one that was not one I'd chosen, I'd never ever give itup because he bought it. In the past I have been given O.T. dolls that were nothing like what I was collecting. I still keep those, too, because they were gifts from people who cared enough about me to know that I collected dolls.

    20. I have been given/gifted two dolls by a friend and have won a doll at a con.

These were obviously not planned dolls. In that case, I'm just happy to have them and I will continue to save up for the dolls I want. I guess I could sell them, but they are lovely and are gifts (as in, I'm not losing my own money at all). It was just amazing of my friend to think of me and send them to me out of the blue. So I'm not selling them (unless someone was dying or I was going to be homeless or something like that, of course). I'm sure my friend wouldn't care that much either way, but I care. So they aren't going anywhere, even if I want another doll.

The doll I won... definitely no personal ties at work there, but it still feels special to me. It's a great doll and a wonderful memento of the con, so I'm not selling that one either.

I've won a head that wasn't doing anything for me, and I sold that. :)

I guess if I had asked for a certain doll and got the wrong one by mistake... that might be different. It would depend on the person giving it and how they felt. If they said something like, "I just thought this doll would be perfect for you," then I'd keep it, since they picked it out particularly for me. If they didn't care about the doll and just wanted me to have what I wanted, I'd run it by them-- asking them if they would mind if I swapped the doll for something else that I really wanted. If they were cool with it, then I'd do it. But I've picked out gifts for people before and been a little miffed if they took it right back to the store. I try and be practical about it... thinking that they were getting what they really wanted, but it was still a bit weird. I guess that happens a lot these days... I mean, I just get impersonal stuff like gift cards for people now, because I don't want to deal with going through the trouble of picking out something that they won't like... but I also think that's rather sad in a way... :(
