Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. BJD Hobby Block Similar to Writer's Block?

Oct 27, 2014

    1. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that has had some sort of BJD hobby block, but these past few weeks I've felt like I'm at a loss for inspiration for my dollie. :...( What do you guys do to get over bjd hobby block? or do you wait it out and do other things?

    2. As with any other hobby block, sometimes it's best to wait it out and do other things. If you don't want to wait it out, do something simple within the hobby that will still bring you enjoyment. In regards to bjds, that could be simply playing with them. The inspiration should come back to you with time. Who knows? Maybe a play session with your doll will bring you inspiration. ;)

    3. Its a natural thing that happens from time to time! It happened to me after I went back to college after summer break, I didn't touch my dolls for almost 2 months! :...( I agree with Petite_Miss that playing with them might help! Or sometimes I'll lurk around and get really inspired by other people's beautiful dolls to want to work/be with mine more!

    4. Maybe that's what I'm lacking?!? Hahaha I feel so obliviously dumb... :doh I've been so busy lately with life stuff and telling myself to try and put aside time to focus on my doll plans and similar topics that I forgot that "play-time" is something I can do without having to make any progression to my doll's story or etc.

Thank you so much!!! Now I really need to put aside time for just "play-time"!

Yea, I haven't been giving my MNF any attention lately. And like I mentioned to Petite_Miss, I completely forgot to just have fun and play with the doll. I was so focused on trying to set aside time to progress her story or add on to her outift that "play-time" wasn't even in my mind. Oh boy... I have a lot to learn hahaha. :XD: Thank's so much for suggestion and support!

    5. The fact that you mention her story specifically may also be a clue. So-called "Writer's Block" isn't some mystical thing that manifests and makes it impossible for you to write. "Writer's Block" is actually your subconscious interfering with what you had planned. Your subconscious is much better at looking at story and plot and recognizing that what you had intended just wasn't going to work than your conscious is. So instead of looking at your doll's story and telling yourself "it's going to go in THIS direction" and trying to force it, perhaps you should look at ALL the possible directions it could go. When one of them is the best, your subconscious will recognize that, and you will find the story is flowing freely again--even if it is something that otherwise would never have occurred to you!

    6. Ask the doll what they want and ask them to tell you in your sleep. I've had some dolls for years that never figured out their back stories, I just learn a little bit more about them as time goes on and in the meanwhile we just enjoy each other's company.

    7. Get them out and do a photo shoot, using whatever is around you. Sometimes the most amusing ones are bjds looking totally out of place, like a mermaid on a dashboard or aristocratic looking dolls appearing to be baffled by a modern kitchen.

    8. I have hobby block every now and then too! Usually I try to work through it, but sometimes I feel like I need to just wait it out. I've also found that (with my Blythe doll) the persistent "block" on inspiration and direction I had on her was a sign that I was losing interest. Everything I tried to do with her I was unhappy with, and for me, she just wasn't worth the effort. I considered selling her at a very low price because I did some damage to her while attempting to modify her a bit, but my mom really loves her so I keep her around. I don't hate her, it's just sometimes difficult to look at her and think about all the wasted effort I put into her.

I haven't had this experience with a BJD yet, because I have only one, but I've realized I like to have at least somewhat of a plan for what I want to do with them before buying, which I did not do with my Blythe!

    9. I either look for ideas for doll clothes, think of seasonal outfits to make, cuddle, or just watch anime with my little princess. I usually come up with something to do.

    10. Give some break! for me, I put dolls in the chest deeep in side and do other hobby. and it pop up in mind again later, and that time, I give free to dolls! haha

    11. No time is wasted time, especially any form of creative time. At the least your Blythe was good practice and helped you figure out what you want to do with your next doll. Be happy someone else has found happiness with her because that might have been the point all along.

    12. I completely agree with this! I roleplay my dolls, and when I run out of ideas for a character, it's usually because the character itself just isn't right. My favorite dolls/OCs are the ones I just let flow and see where they go instead of trying to force a planned out plotline.

Also, I have multiple dolls, so I think it helps when I'm bored or frustrated of one to focus on another.

    13. I am just coming out of a bout of "sewing block" for my dolls. Usually I love to sew but just couldn't get motivated to start a new project. I did some other art projects for awhile and then started redressing, rewigging, and eye changing. Now I am excited again about making them some new outfits.

    14. Wow! That is such a great point! I have been focusing on a straightforward storyline that I specifically want for her. I didn't really weigh in varying options that could be possible. Thank you so much! I'm going to have to really open up the story and let it take its course.

    15. That's what I've been doing lately too. I've been going back to other hobbies that I had stopped doing just so that I can clear my head of this "BJD block". Hoping to get really inspired by something from the other hobbies so that I can jump right back into giving my doll some needed attention.

    16. Haha dolli-photoshoots is something I haven't fully jumped into yet hahah, but I need to soon. :XD: I've taken a few shots of her when I first got her and when I did her face-up, but other than that not much. I know she has that "deer-in-headlights" look that I need to fix. :|

    17. I felt really nervous at first before even owning my MNF. I was scared to own something so expensive and almost fragile. So I had to really think about main points on why having one and getting into the hobby would be good for me. A lot of the "need" came from wanting a really poseable figure that I can use to help me with figure drawing. I hated the wooden figure drawing mannequins haha. Also I wanted to bring one of my characters that I had been writing and story-dreaming about since high school. So there was sort of a plan for her, but the "BJD block" is killing me. ...So I started up on other hobbies that I had set aside when I was focusing too much on my MNF in hopes that I will get inspired.

    18. Sounds good to me! Just having her as company and seeing her everyday makes me happy and feel really grateful in having something so wonderful! :)

    19. I go through phases like this as well. Sometimes it just happens! Usually it'll pass with time. Sometimes I'll go for months at a time and do nothing with my dolls and sometimes they consume my every free moment. I've learned not to stress over it because I always come back to them. They're extremely forgiving and understanding ;)

Things that help re-kindle the interest for me can be very simple things like buying a new wig or pair of eyes, or just swapping everyone's wigs and eyes around if I don't want to spend money. Usually something will click into place and I fall in love with them all over again XD

    20. I think I'm coming to a realization that I might have just tried to rush myself into forming her character and story and all the little things and didn't stop to breathe and enjoy the factthat I finally own one. ^-^ hahaha.
