1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD pronunciations!

Apr 15, 2014

    1. We have a lot of weird and wonderful exotic sculpt names, terms, and company names in this hobby. Some of the more popular ones seem to defy all laws of English pronunciation, or could be pronounced in more than one way. I was wondering how all of you guys pronounced some of the more strange words in our hobby!

      For example:
I pronounce Iplehouse like "ipple-house", but I've heard others say it like "eye-pull-house".
DZ Feilian is "fey-lian" around here!

    2. I say it Ipplehouse too. It may just be my slight southern accent getting in the way though.

    3. I've always said it like "eye-pull-house" but everyone at our meets say it like "ipple-house", which I think is kinda funny considering we're all from the same area. Maybe it's our roots though, because I think some people came up from the south.

For DZ Feilian I've always thought of it like "Fey-lee-an", but I've never actually had to pronounce it when talking to someone... xD

    4. I'm from Atlantic Canada and I also pronounce it "ipple-house" but I have a friend (also from this region) who pronounces it "eye-pull-house" XD I think it's just all in how it looks to you.

Chinese or Korean sculpt names, however, I generally try to pronounce as they are supposed to be pronounced in their respective language.

Personally, I don't think it really matters how people pronounce various sculpt names, as long as the people they're talking to can understand and know what they're talking about. :)

    5. I think it's always interesting when you're only exposed to certain words through reading and then when you finally hear them they're pronounced differently to how you imagined! I was pronouncing iplehouse "eye-pull-house" too but most people at the meet up I went to said ipplehouse. I wonder what it's meant to sound like - not that I could change the way I read it now!

I also noticed that some people pronounce moe (as in the fairyland moe bodies) With one syllable, like the name, rather than the Japanese way with two. I think it sounds cute like that!

    6. Iplehouse if it's based on Korean for "leaf" should be more "ipple-house." (I'm Korean-American and spent half my childhood in South Korea, although I'm not entirely fluent in the language.)

    7. I've always said "Eye-pull-house", because of how I was taught to "sound words out" in school. Of course, that's in the English language, so doesn't apply to others, but it's just how I first read it and it sticks in my brain like that.

Another is Bobobie. I hear a lot of people say "Bo-bo-bee", but I was told once by a dealer that it's "Bo-bah-bee".

On sculpt names, I don't even know where to start. Yder, Ys, Phny.....

And what about Louis? I own Iplehouse AND IslandDoll Louis boys, and seems most people around here say "Lewis", but I say "Louie". (Probably because of the Directioner in me...I just CAN'T say "Lewis"! >.> ) Though the IslandDoll Louis fullset is French themed, and therefor should be "Louie".

    8. If it's Korean companies, I just take a look at how they write their company name.
      Iplehouse therefore would be Ee-plehouse,
      Aileendoll would be Ey-Lin-Doll
      Luts would be Loots
      and so on. ^^
I do the same with doll names, if it's possible.

    9. Alternately, it occurs to me I can just go to the Korean sites and read the Hangeul, which has got to be more reliable for some of the Korean sculpt names. If it's a Koreanization of a Western language name, then I don't know which one's more correct either. :p

    10. I do the same with the company's Japanese or Chinese site (if there is one). I figured it had to be more accurate for a lot of sculpt names.

    11. Maybe some people avoid saying "ipple" because it sounds too much like "nipple"! :blush

    12. Some of my other doll friends have already made that joke!

    13. This feels like dejavu seeing a pronunciation thread here on DoA. I think there's one already before? (might've been eaten up in the switch to the new server; who knows)

      Here's how I say it :) :
      Iplehouse: EepuL-house (like 'nipple')
Leeke World: Leak-worhld (I get so annoyed when people pronounce it as Leeky World. Like can we not. *Peels off face* )
      Luts: Lutz
Unoa: Yu-noa (apparently that's how it's spelt in Japanese and translated too)
Yder: This one's tricky. I'm not too sure but I think its "yai-dur"?
      Feeple: Fii-pul

      • x 1
    14. Ok I have to admit I'm an iple as in nipple!

    15. Iplehouse - eye-pull-house
      Feeple - Fee-pull
      Taobao- Tah-ow Bah-ow
      Yder - yidder
      Leekeworld - Leak-world

      About - Aboot ;) lol

    16. I pronounce most of it wrong, but I don't really care, because I hardly ever say it out loud.
My pronounciation is a combination of English and Dutch.

      Iplehouse: eye-pull-house
Leeke World: leeka world (like the Dutch name "Lieke" :p )
      Luts: luhts (like "lullaby")
Unoa: uu-no-wa (like "un" in French or "muur" in Dutch)
      Yder: ie-der (like "eve")
      Aileen Doll: eye-leen doll
      Moe: mo
      Littlefee: littel fay
      Minifee: mee nee fay
Louis: I alternate between Lewis and Louie

For my doll names I do look up the translation or don't use the name at all.
      I pronounce doa like doe-wa.

I'm curious to how you spell Soa(h) because I pronounce it like sow-wa (Soa is Dutch for S.T.D, so that name is weird for me anyway).

    17. Ipplehouse: イパルハウす [iparu hausu]
      Feeple: フィーパリ [feepari]
      Luts: ラーツ [raatsu]
      Leekeworld: リーキワルド [riiki warudo]
      Taobao: タオバオ [taobao]
      Yder: ヤイダ [yaida]
      Unoa: ユノア [yunoa]

      I end up pronounce every foreign word with a strong Japanese accent, which is why I sound like a doof speaking Chinese. ^^;

    18. Based on the Hangul, it's a short /i/ sound in Iplehouse :D And of course if you hear a KOREAN say it, that's exactly what they say...

    19. Finally! Someone brought this up!

I've always wondered what I'd do when talking about my dolls if I got one whose company name or sculpt I could not pronounce!

I say "ipplehouse" because that's what it looked like to me the first time I saw it. And Bo-bah-bee? My dolls are mostly Bobobie and Resinsoul and I've never heard that before. Who knew?

    20. I usually pronounce things like this:

      Iplehouse - Ipplehouse

      Unoa - Oo-noah)

      Bobobie - Bo bo bee

Luts - Same way as it's spelled.

      RS Fei/Mei - Fay/May

      Feilien - Fay-lien...Almost like Fay-Alien.
