Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. BJD Sculpt Names Discussion

Jun 23, 2014

    1. Not sure if a similar thread exists, but I'm not talking about finding a name for your BJD. I'm talking about the names of the sculpts/series we love and know, because some of them are weird, some of them are unique, and I wanna discuss them. :)

So tell us what your favourite and least favourite sculpt names are and why. And what do you think they mean/originated from? (i.e.: Fairyland's "-fee" means fairies, I believe?)

      I'll go first:

Favorite: Minifee xD Because I like pronouncing it as Minifée (Mee.nee.fey) instead of (Mee.nee.fee)

Least Favorite: Unoa Sist :( Because it reminds me of a cyst, and that's not nice.

      Now you go!

    2. Ummm... I found it interesting. Many companies prefer to choose name for their dolls, based on myth, folklore, famous/historical people or some "dead" language like ancient Latin, Greek, etc...

My favorite sculpt No. 1 is Okita Souji from VOLKS : The name was based on the real historical bushi in Shinsengumi (Bakumatsu time) who worked for Bakufu as special police to protect shougun. And he was one of the best swordsmen in Edo time!

And No. 2 : Lacrimosa from IOS : It's ancient Latin, combination from "lacrima" - tear + "-osa" - full, a lot --> So it means crying. Such a tragic name. :D

    3. I like when they have real names (Owen, Miho, Hayarn, whatever) rather than random non-name names. My least favorite name amongst the ones I own is my Rosenlied 'Pudding'...but my least favorite overall is probably Dikadoll's AAAAA. Absolutely adorable doll, so why let a cat name it by walking over the keyboard...? :sweat

    4. @ Hallowie29: I agree, Lacrimosa is so pretty! Very bittersweet :)

@ Safira: Lol! Office cat intruded, haha! Is that really a sculpt's name? That's ridiculous xD

Japanese/Korean people in general always pick great unique names! Not just in the BJD hobby, but even some anime characters names make you feel like they put a lot of thought into it! Chinese companies, not so much, since they tend to name them Chinese names mostly and I don't understand them, haha! :P i.e: Loongsoul doll

    5. I like unusual names that are still names, like Salomé (Freakstyle, means "peace") and Malicia (NimphaeryTales). I agree with Lacrimosa above.

I don't like the following names: Soa (means "std" in my language) (Iplehouse), Dong (Resinsoul), Dodo (Limhwa), God (Doll Love) and similar (including Dikadol). I also don't like it when doll sculpts don't have names but numbers. Food names are not my favorite either.

    6. My favourite Doll name has to be Luts ZuZu Ggul. I just like that play on words with Ggul meaning honey (matching the doll's sweet look), and *GgulGgul* being the sound pigs make. :lol: Because you know, she's a pig and all? ^^;
They saw their chance and took it. ^^

My least favourite would be all the Secretdoll "persons". Just calling them "person #x" is just so... I don't know, so distant.

Also Souldoll's names are hard to pronounce sometimes, with their Zaphnaths and Xylenes. :XD:

    7. Chamillia, I always associate Unoa Sist with Sister...haha! But now that you say it reminds you of 'cyst' it's giving me a weird vibe. (Ahhh, I just got my Sist today, so now it's funny XD)

My favorite sculpt names are ones that are random English words, like AE's 'Blueberry'. I think those sound so cute.
I haven't run into a lot of sculpt names I've disliked so far, but sometimes if they are common names the sculpt names remind me of people in my personal life (which may or may not be a good thing for the doll hahaha )

Also this is really hard to talk about in real life...like how do you pronounce it?

    8. That's a great question. "A to the fifth"? "Quintuple A"? "5A"? I don't own this doll, but if I did I'd probably just call her 5A when speaking with others after clarifying which doll I was speaking of ("AAAAA").

    9. Wow, I hadn't heard of AAAAA. maybe it's a Monty Python tribute? ;)

    10. Oh my gosh, if it were, I'd have to buy one on principle.

I prefer "nonsense" or more unusual names over common-place names for sculpts. When you give a really unique doll a normal name, like Doll Chateau's Christina, it feels like part of her personality has already been decided. At least, that's how I feel. Doesn't mean I don't want that sculpt, never that! :XD:

(Maybe I've just had bad experiences with people named Christina?)

I really enjoy Soom sculpt names, though. They're rather fantastical without (usually) being completely bizarre. :)

    11. I like easy names to remember, so I always know my sculpt off by heart XD Theres one I love out there but I never remember his sculpt name properly tho I know what websites he's on etc.... I have a Dikadoll AAAAA and I love him, but I agree it's a silly name xD

    12. Of all the ones I have, the most amusing has to be Sadol Whee - I know it has to mean something else in Korean, but in English "Whee!" is an exclamation of joy, and the sculpt is actually rather sad looking. I also find Volks Williams a little strange. "Williams" is a common surname, but as a first name?

    13. The Soom names based on semi- and precious stones and minerals are totally cool.

Be With You Dolls have tinies named Paprika, Strawberry, Carrot and Grape. The names and the dolls are adorable!

My first doll was a CP Delf El... I'm not a big fan of "El"-- mostly since you can't search it on DoA.

    14. I really like DollClans' naming system, basing their sculpts on animals.
      Hellhounds: Vezeto, Kien, Koyote
      Tigris Claws: Jaquer, Benkel, Siber
      Sweet Poison: Wyper, Phython

I like Soom's names, probably because I'm partial to ancient sounding names.

IOS is a weird company. They have gorgeous names like Lacrimosa, Anarmonia, and Infernale. Such a pleasure just to have them rolling of your tongue. And then they have names like S, M, and now A1. :?

    15. Well, the IoS naming system is because they have two sculptors (sisters). The lettered heads are all sculpted by the sister who bases her work on celebrity faces, and the letter is the first letter of the person's name.

    16. My favorite are IslandDoll Louis and Eleanor, and I bought them partially because of their names...I'm a One Direction fan, and one of the members is Louis Tomlinson, and his girlfriend is named Eleanor. IslandDoll abbreviated is "ID", One Direction abbreviated is 1D......ID and 1D look so similar, and Louis and Eleanor (the dolls) were released on Valentine's Day with default pictures that make them look like a couple....how could I NOT buy both?? Even if it's all just complete coincidence, that's how I ended up getting both.

My least favorite/"worst" are the letters/numbers (Volks F-16, Dollgru #9), and ones I have no idea how to pronounce (Ys, Phny). I also love my AoD Gu but hate his sculpt name. I sounds like "goo", and whether that's baby talk or gooey, I hate it!

Funniest.....School heads.....my husband couldn't stop making inappropriate comments after I told him "Asher is the School D Head"......

    17. @ CloakedSchemer: Whoa! That is one hell of a coincidence xD Sounds like you gave it much thought, haha! I generally like the name Eleanor as well, it's so fancy!

@ arcanefool: Now that I think about it, DollChateau has the weirdest sculpts but the most common and "normal" names for them :P

    18. I like a lot of the names for tinies, be it food names or Fairyland's Soso, Kaka, Roro, Popo etc... though funnily enough, one of my least favourite is also a realpuki... Pupu xD Resinsoul Dong is also awkward...

    19. Didn't Impldoll originally name Colin, their little scorpion boy, "Penis"? Or something like that. I'm also interested in why Ringdoll has named their crying sculpt "Mona". I wonder if it has anything to do with the similarity in sound with the word "moan". It's a good name for her for that reason, whether it was intentional or not.
I always change the names of my dolls, even if I like their sculpt names, just because it seems to be the thing to do. But when I have to think of a name, the first one that pops into my head is the company one, so I have to wonder why I even bother coming up with new monikers.

    20. I like Siean from Fairyland, even though I'm not entirely sure how to say it. In my head it sounds like see-ahn, but I suppose sye-ahn would make more sense? I also like (Volks) Lorina, I think it's pretty sounding and it suits the sculpt.

Least favourite: (Iplehouse) Rexy. I just find it so unattractive and I've heard "rexy" used as a short/slang term for anorexia, so automatically think of that.
