BJDs based off of Fairy tales/Folkore/Any story?

Nov 17, 2008

    1. Hello! Forgive me if this is already a topic of discussion is so delete!
I've seen some companies base a series of dolls off of fairy tales/folklore. My question is your favorite story and would you want a collection of dolls based off it it?

    2. Yo-SD Hanzel and Gretel! haha. Dunno what the witch would be though.

    3. I don't know if it counts but my collection of dolls in based off of a book I'm writing.
One of my dolls is Kylar Stern from the Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

    4. -hides face in shame-
my boy's son is going to be based off of an unborn character from the SAW movie series.
...and yes. I'm naming him Gideon.

    5. that is kinda crazy cool, Kalae

I actually thought about getting dolls based on Grimm fairy tales. I was going to get some of the lesser known characters since I have my own interpretations of the stories. Along the way I changed my mind though, but I might not mind getting them in the future if I found the right molds. I've got enough I want already tho.

    6. 'daww, thanks.
It would be the first SAW-based doll on DoA, trust me, I've done a search.

    7. I would love to see a Brian Froud series... I know, typical faeries... but his work is incredible, and could you imagine the clothes? *swoons*

    8. Cute topic! :D I would *love* a series of dolls based on the characters from "The Snow Queen." Hans Christian Andersen is one of my most favourite writers, and although it's not the work I love most of his, I can just picture those characters making excellent and imaginative dolls! :)

My first doll and a couple of yet-to-be dolls of mine have literary or story-based roots. Lily's last name is "Kiddo", after Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill. I have just purchased a head from the marketplace whose character's last name will be "Manderley," after the great house in Du Maurier's 'Rebecca.' :) Harking back to Andersen ... I really want a Narsha Boy named Kay, after the boy from the The Snow Queen :kitty2 His last name would be Andersen!

...oh, while it's not a fairy-tale or story, I would love Prince Edward (King Edward V) and Prince Richard dolls...:kitty2

Ehhh, I've geeked out too much here...! :sweat

    9. I would like a whole set of "Wind in the Willows" anthros (Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad), in costumes. That was my favorite book as a child.

    10. well I am kind of a sucker for old cartoons, and I would personally love to see a set of dolls made after thd chars of:

the old "adventures of dungeons and dragons" cartoon,
The old "adventures of dark water" cartoons,
      The "Dark Crystal" movie.

AND of course the Elfquest comics

EDIT: oooeeeps yes I did of course mean "pirates of dark water" lol for my brain stille being on the previous thing I was typing lol

    11. I did a FCS based off of Huck Finn from The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn. I would love one day to have a Tom and Becky and maybe even Jim. I'm a sucker for anything Twain. As for Fairytales I like the Hansel and Gretel idea or maybe Jack and the Beanstalk with a Yo Jack and a SD17 giant~

    12. Volks made a few specific dolls based on fairytale characters, their 'Journey to Dream Nights' series from Dolpa 16 and Dolpa 18; SD16 Amelia and SDC Kurt are the Princess and the Frog from 'the Frog King' and SD17 Alain and SDC Renee are the Miller's Son and Puss from 'Puss-in-Boots', I'm not sure if they had any more. I would love to see Volks do the 1001 Nights next, perhaps have an SD16 girl as Sheherazade and an SDC boy as Sinbad the Sailor, or maybe do a pantomime version with an SD17 boy Aladdin and an SDC boy Wishee-Washee :D

I have my own SDC Kurt and while he isn't a fairy-tale character, he is a supernatural one, I've made him a Nix, a water-sprite :D

    13. I grew up with the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen (there was no disney in my childhood), so my MNF's character is kind of influenced by the classic "fairy" tales. But she isn't a specific character from any particular story, so I don't know if it counts. I definitely chose her because she looks right for the part though- part beautiful, part creepy, somewhat haunting. ^_^

    14. Oh what a wonderful thread :love
I know it's not a fairy tale, and I've seen some owner-created version on here but ANY Lord of the Rings dolls I would die for, books or movies! :drool

As for fairy tales, I agree that a 1001 Nights set of dolls would be really cool, I'd also like to see Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. My dad used to tell me the story of the Trojan War as a bedtime story (not in all its gruesomeness or anything) so any Greek Mythological dolls would be fantastic as well!

    15. AAAAA! I'm not the only one! :D I want a "posessed" version of Kay!
And any character based of Brothers Grimm fairytales would be awesome!
And then there is always anime...

    16. Have you ever seen a dollzone fox with a wig on? perfect gelfling!

    17. Tanith Lee did some of the fairy tales written from a more goth and horror point of view I believe one of the titles is Stories from the sisters Grimm.
Picture little red riding hood as a werewolf, frog prince winds up being a demon, there's more but the stories are all really interesting rewrites.

    18. I'm a bigger fan of Angela Carter's prose than of Tanith Lee's. Carter mainly wrote short stories, but they are subtle and deeply disturbing :aheartbea. I also highly recommend the Datlow/Windling-edited series of anthologies (Snow White, Blood Red, et al) and most of the Fairy Tale novels (such as Yolen's Briar Rose or Frosts' Fitcher's Brides). Kij Johnson gave Japanese folktales similar treatment in The Fox Woman and Fudoki. If you can handle poetry, you shouldn't miss Anne Sexton's Transformations. Even I've written some fairy-tale-inspired poetry; it's too rich a seam not to mine.

Getting back to dolls, I want one more Pipos kitty to dress as Puss in Boots, but now I want to do the costume, complete with Cosworx ears, for my Delf...who would then, of course, strangle me in my sleep :sweat.

    19. You mean Pirates of Dark Water? :O That would be an awesome set of dolls if so.

    20. East of the Sun, West of the Moon would be awesoooome to have as a set of dolls. That's my favorite! Also, in the realm of mythology, I think the story of Persephone and Hades would make an awesome set, as would sets based off of Hindu figures, or Aztec and Mayan ones. :3 (Mostly because imagine the COSTUMES! *dies*)
