Box Opening Videos or Pictures?

Apr 7, 2013

    1. There are quite a number of box opening videos on youtube and sometimes while watching these videos some of the owners would take pictures while filming the video. So I was just wondering if you guys would prefer videoing your box opening or just taking pictures of them and share them on sites. For me I just love watching box opening videos as the reaction of the people getting their dolls just makes me happy. So what are your preferences? :)

    2. Ooo, awesome topic bro! I've personally been thinking about this a lot in relation to my incoming doll. In the past I've done both; my first doll I only took photographs of, which I regret now because I would have liked to have gone back all these years later and been able to see my own face when I first held him. I recorded opening my second doll and used stills from the video as the pictures then switched back to photographs for my floating head. I didn't even record opening my tiny because I was too excited. I think I may do that thing of taking photographs in the video and just speeding those parts up in editing this time.

In terms of watching other people's box openings I do love to see the actual people and their reactions, but I really love those first naked and bald photos of somebody's BJD too. I think if somebody can manage to do both then I'm happy to look at both. It's also really nice to hear the sensory reactions of owners, like when they say 'she smells like resin!' or 'he's so heavy!'. It's a lot more immersive than photographs, but the photos show the doll's beauty more.

    3. I prefer taking pictures instead of videos for box openings, just because it's difficult to set up my camera properly for videos. When it comes to other people's box openings,I like videos. When I was unsure about buying a Soso,it was a box opening video that helped me make up my mind. Sometimes you can get a better idea of a doll's actual size when you see people handling them in a video.

    4. I like photos because I can see more detail and for as long or short as I want to.

Videos are good if the person is good at making videos, otherwise they can be a bit boring and useless.

So, really, it depends! But a bit of a preference for photos. But I've seen some really fun videos that really worked perfectly.

    5. Video is interesting, but it's often boring.
Photos are the best way in my opinion to show open box.
Unfortunately I was so overwhelmed with emotions when comes my long awaited doll. Therefore can not I make a correct overview of my unpacking.

    6. For me it's a mixed opinion. They both have their merits and I think it's the overall presentation that decides. For example, I've seen a few videos on youtube of box openings where there is untold amounts of squeeling and giggling. Some is perfectly fine, expected even, but excessive gushing just turns me off... it's like watching re-runs of Oprah or Ellen. On the other hand, I like the videos that explain the thinking behind a doll, maybe their characters or their clothing choices, even just why they chose the doll.
Pictures are the same, if they put a little effort into the presentation, even just by adding little captions at the bottom of each pic or an overarching spiel at the beginning, makes them that much more enjoyable. A bunch of pictures with no explanation (no matter their quality) just isn't as interesting :P

    7. I have mixed feelings on this. I love watching box opening videos and I wish I had one of my own. They are very personal and it's fun to watch the emotions each doll owner goes through with a new doll. Of course there is a lot to opening and not much value for most viewers unless there is some informational value. So for entertainment sake I like them, but if I want to really get some info about the doll how it's packaged and how the doll looks on receiving him or her from a dealer I prefer photos. Also get a lot more details with photos.

    8. I really don't like videos. It feels like a waste of time to me, since more often than not, more time is spent giggling, rambling, commenting with family/friends, fighting the box, etc than actually showing how the doll was packed and how it looks. I rarely look at any box openings, but when I do, I'm looking for information, not entertainment. As to my own.....absolutely no videos, since I HATE being on film! lol I don't really do photos either much, since the few I have done just seemed...idk...really boring. *shrug*

    9. i prefer taking pictures as doing video is hard to upload, and im not comfortable to do box opening video as well XD kinda awkward for me

    10. I don't really do either. I also don't really look at other people's box openings, they just don't interest me. That's one concept of the doll hobby that's never made me curious, I don't see the point of doing so. However, if other people like to do that, then more power to them.

    11. I love videos. I know a lot of people take wonderful pictures and I enjoy seeing them. But when I get a doll of my own I want to see it right away and I don't take pictures. I also love looking back at my own videos xD ^^

    12. I prefer photographs, because I save them for references and to make mock-ups of my characters while I wait for my own dolls to arrive*. I don't mind videos, but I must admit I'll sometimes open a box-opening thread, see a YouTube video embedded and just close the tab right away because it's not what I was hoping for :sweat

*Of course, I keep any mock-ups I make from other people's photos for personal reference only, and get permission if I want to post them.

    13. I do like both but prefer videos when it comes to box openings. Its fun to watch people reduced to giggling excited messes when they see their doll for the first time. I suppose I do watch them more for the people and the dolls are just icing on the cake.

    14. I wouldn't know how to take a video of myself, or how to upload it, save for on my ipod. I take pictures and perfer those. I used to be on dialup and videos were a no-no. They'd buffer FOREVER! I'd get a second or two...pictures I can see easily. Videos are still sort of slow but not like that now. Still, I like photos.

    15. I normally prefer photos for boxes opening and keep the video for myself so I can go and look back on that day with the photos. Now I have always wonder what it would be like if someone made a video of their box opening into a story and have a interesting plot in it, make it more eye catching to watch :)

    16. I prefer photos. They are easier to see and reference when learning about the sculpt, which is the most important part of a box opening for me.

    17. I never watch box-opening videos. It's the doll that's important to me, so I much prefer to see still photographs.

    18. I like them both but for different reasons.
Videos I watch for the people and seeing their emotions when dolls arrive and they see them for the very first time.
Pictures I like more from a review point of view. To see the actual doll in more detail

    19. I like box openings. I get to see how the doll is packaged so I know what to expect. And I love reading and watching people's reactions when they get the doll. Especially if they are very expressive. It makes me happy to see joy.

I like pictures to get a full review of the doll, but I really like videos because it helps me more with the dimensions of the doll. Either way, I prefer the videos when they don't ramble for half the video about something entirely different. I normally just skip to when they open the box and get the doll out.

    20. I don't like watching videos. I've only seen two. One time, the video was like 40 minutes long. 40 minutes! It takes me like 2 to rip open a box and get my doll into my arms. Watching someone delicately, painstakingly open a box for nearly an hour is booooring. The other time I watched a video, the person had a nasty room, wore tennis shoes on their unmade bed, kept cursing and muttering like a loon, and handled their doll so roughly I was gritting my teeth. So, no, I don't like watching strangers open their dolls. But sure, post some pictures and I'm happy to share in your excitement over a new doll! ^^ Just don't pose them with garbage piles and toilets in the background, seriously...
