Bringing your doll to an Event

Oct 14, 2013

    1. Silly question: I am bringing my doll to her very first event next month. I am wondering what is the best way to walk around with her. My first thought was like a baby byorn, baby carrier. But I would look so silly. How do you carry your doll(s) around at an event or convention? What is the standard protocol?

    2. I have mini and smaller size dolls, but when I go to conventions I just carry one around on my arm :) I have a MSD sized carrier that can take my two big girls and I made a custom suitcase for my yosds with lots of padding and white fleece. It really depends on your comfort level too. I've seen people who use baskets to carry their dolls around as well.

    3. Where did you get the MSD sized carrier? I am going to look for a basket, that's a great idea, Thanks!

    4. I believe I bought it from mint on card. If I had to do it again I'd go the hard suitcase route though-$10 for the suitcase from Michael's and some spare foam and a bit of fabric and ribbon. I manage to squeeze 4 of them into it at once very safely.

    5. I went to a doll show yesterday and I padded my mini-backpack with a flannel pillowcase and a small cushion, then I sat my MSD right in there and zipped the sides up so her head and shoulders were still showing. That way I was able to show her off but still have two free hands. Most of my dolls are SD though, so you could use a normal size backpack for that maybe, but it would be a lot heavier. When I took one of my SDs to a doll event last summer, I took her (and my MSD) to the location in my SD size carrying case, but I carried them around once inside. It was a lot harder to look at stuff because I had to keep putting them down in order to pick other things up! Eventually I left them at a table with my friend for a bit, but really, bigger dolls are kinda a pain to carry around for long. I've seen some people use those plastic wagons with seats for kids to carry their big dolls in! I might try that when all of my SDs are complete enough to take a bunch of them to an event....

    6. I like the idea of carrying the doll in a backpack where at least part of them shows. Good point about having hands free, I'm sure I would leave her somewhere, I've done that when I carry my wallet without a purse. Thanks!
If you had some pics of your dolls in your backpack I would love to see them!

    7. Do the carrier cases you buy from the companies allow you to keep the top open so that people can view the doll? (Similar to the backpack idea?)

    8. I remembering having a mini, clear backpack thing to carry my Furby in. Something like that would be neat!

    9. Well, for an event, cases would be nice, but personally a tote bag which can fit your doll, or a backpack (for bigger dolls) would be better.

I brought Hizuru to the local anime con once, and I was able to buy new clothes for her there. ^^

    10. You can get doll carriers from Dollmore too and Luts or Volks website. Dollmore has the double MSD/SD carrier that can fit two dolls at one go.

I'll be attending an event next month too and might just be hand carrying my SD doll. But if my incoming 70cm boy arrives on time then I'll be bringing him along too either in case/tote bag (so I can keep a eye on him easily rather than not being able to see him at the back) or have my friend carry him for me xD

    11. Normally, when I go places with Leah, I'll keep her in her box in a bag (normally something like a fabric grocery bag) and just carry that. It works well at conventions and school. With Sam here, though, I imagine it will be hard to carry both of them, unless one is on my arm and Sam's box is way too big to carry. I've been looking for a tote bag that I can carry over my shoulder that they could both sit in, though. I have one little canvas bag that fits just one of them with their head poking out, but that has such a short strap it's difficult to use.

    12. Admittedly, I'm a pretty twisted individual, but when I saw the mention of a clear backpack, my first thought was that I would *totally* do that, except find a way to pose the doll inside like they were trapped and begging or trying to get out. Scary place, my mind...

    13. I usually take my two MSD's and stick 'em in my old pink Build a Bear carrier that looks like a handbag and the others get chucked into a red bag I got at the flea market. But my father's making me a case for them (he's a carpenter and even made my bed and my desk so this'll be easy for him) I'm curious to see how THAT will turn out but since I won't have it til let's say...Christmas likely..I'll keep up with the Build-A-Bear bag but eventually in the future I'll have to find a way to carry 'em all..My Yo-SD will come with her own little carrier (Resinsoul direct order. >8D) but the others will need their own space...For now it's still the other bag but I might try to figure out a way to use my Guitar Case as a temp case.

    14. HAHAHAHAHA imagine how people (non-BJD owners) will be staring at u xD

    15. LOL you should totally take a photo of that.

    16. I have a baby-carrier from Build-a-Bear that works for SD size dolls (sure beats aching arms from holding the doll all the time) although they really need to be in trousers or very short skirts, longer ones bunch up in the carrier laving their bar-legs sticking out the bottom, and the skirts look all crumpled and messy when you take the doll out of the carrier.

Smaller dolls, I have a craft-tote that I can sit six or more yo-sized tinies and slightly bigger in:[IMG]
(although I usually take fewer and have my ongoing craft-projects in there to, so I can work on stuff when sat in programme items at the convention).

MSD... sitting the open top of a shoulder-bag works (standing upright down one side of the bag so they stick out the top from chest-level upward also works - the other stuff in ththere with them keeps them from shifting around in the bag)

    17. OH MY GOD this is really cute with all the little ones. :fangirl:

    18. Not a scary place, a very creative place. I was thinking the same thing!

    19. I took my girl to a con this past weekend. I brought her in a small giftbag with the cardboard bottom, and had her sit in that when she wasn't with me or when my hubby was "babysitting." When I had her with me I simply had her cradled in my arm. I was worried it was going to be a hassle, but it wasn't too bad. I plan on getting one of those Volks carriers that go on sale this weekend for future travelling though.

    20. This is a fabulous idea. I have seen these at Michael's, Plenty of nooks and cranny's to carry accessories too!

I am on the hunt for a clear backpack now! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!

I found the perfect bag for my doll at Amazon... It's coming in two days..

Now all I have to do is come up with a creative way to get her to sit in the tote and look pretty!
