Building a doll house for larger dolls?

Oct 4, 2006

    1. Has anyone thought about or attempted to build a house for their 60cm BJDs. Not just a room but a house with several rooms? Do you think it would even be possible to make an elaborate house fully furnished? I was thinking about building something like this [IMG][IMG] but I'm not sure where to begin. I wanted to see if anyone has done it already or thought about doing it. What would your doll's house look like if you could build it?

    2. I've started on a similar project but haven't gotten too far since I have to move now and have a billion and one projects to complete first...something that will be less unweidly and more easily stored/moved and whatnot...

    3. I've been thinking about making several rooms/boxes that would stack together like a house

I think if you tried to make it all solid though you'd have a lot of trouble if you needed to move it (especially fitting it through doors)

also bear in mind that if you keep it to a 1:3 scale its going to pretty much take over whatever room you put it in

    4. yeah exactly :)

For storage purposes I'm trying to egineer a nice way for each to fold down....

    5. I'm planning on doing it someday but it will take forever since I want it to be at correct scale...

    6. Here is a site that custom makes Barbie doll size houses--these are really large, just to give you an idea:

Here are Playscale houses for Barbie size:

And here is a site with a house hand made for 16 inch fashion dolls--now this is huge!!

I haven't seen any dollhouses anywhere that are in a larger scale, except for kids playhouses
Just for fun (I wanna live here!)

    7. O.o Good God!

    8. rillystar: I 'd love to see what you've made so far :) i tend to start alot of projects too.

vulpes: that's a good idea to make stackable rooms then there could be like an outside shell that you can stack them in so it still looks like a house!
My ultimate goal is to have a whole room set aside so that I could build the house in it.

      toydogz4: thankies for the links

Semienigma: lol, yeah that's what i thought when I first saw the houses

    9. ohh, I really like the house in the second link :)

:o 23 grand! lol, I need to win the lottery!

    10. lol well I've made some hand held folding fans, belt chains, jewelry, a few other things...have a few outfits cut out and need sewing and then I have a few projects on the side I'm also working on

    11. I believe nofunangie has a multi level/room house for her 60cm dolls. It's so cool! I'll see if I can find pics around here...

If I devoted any space to something like a giant doll house I'd either have to give up sleeping (bye bye bed) or all of my books (NOOOOO!!!) It would have to be something folding or stacking to be practical for my apartment. For now I plan on collecting all the props and backdrops I need and switching out sets on my drafting table. :) I do love doll houses though.:(

    12. I currently have a two story "house" for my dolls that will be expanded when I move into my new home. I'd love to have a whole house, but I can't even imagine how you could pull that off without a lot of spare space. To get a realistic feel, rooms need to be a certain height and depth, and where I'm at now with my house, it's already taller then me! To make sure we could move it later on, we built it in pieces.

I can't wait to rework my doll house to work out some of the trial and error I had in building it. I would love to see someone with some amazing woodworking skills build a BJD house.

    13. Teehee! we posted about almost the same time!
And here's a picture of my house:

I really need to take a picture of me standing next to it to show size comparison.

    14. lol it's hard to have enough space...I need to rent my spare room so likely I'd have to buy one of those insta-sheds to fit XD, might try a small section of my wall for a two story bachelor home or something

    15. I think having a house for my dolls would take up too much space, but i'd love to build a shadowbox like Kallisti (Blastmilk) has. If i remember correctly from pictures, it's 2 or 3 sided and set up to take pictures in, but only one room. I think that's about just right.

    16. nofunangie: that's really cool, thanks for sharing your pics..I really like the red striped furniture paired with dark furniture.

    17. The problem with such a thing is that in order to maintain a realistic feel(i.e, unless it's a bathroom or a small kitchen, the doll should have room to lay down in either direction with room to spare in just about any room in the house), a doll 'house' would have to be huge.

Like, just one bedroom from a standard-sized house. 12x12x10, right? Twelve feet wide , twelve feet long, ten foot ceiling. Scale that to 1/3 and you've got a room four feet on a side and 3 1/3 feet tall. Build something against the wall in a room that size and you might be OK. 8x4 living room, 4x4 kitchen, or like, 3x4 kitchen with a small hallway. Upstairs a 4x4 bedroom, 2x4 bath, 6x4 master bedroom... You'd have a nice small 2-story house then. Put some places to put a movable platform to rest a tripod outside a room on for photos... Too bad we're renting and I don't have enough room for such a thing, lol, that'd be awesome. Also a pain to furnish, most things tend to be just too big or just too small.

    18. I have seen one unfurnished wooden house for eighteen inch dolls- it was a monster. You'd almost need a new shed just for your dolls' house!

    19. I think three... and she has everything so perfectly to scale, including pictures for the wall! :aheartbea

nofunangie: your house is gorgeous :D I love the stars around the tops of the walls!!!

    20. I wouldn't mind having one of those Poshtots houses. The Cotton Candy Manor Playhouse is probably more our style. Right now my dolls have a half of my dining room to themselves. I have my mom visiting and she's taken over their usual 6'x9' room. I think I'm more likely to buy a small storage shed and add floors inside and a facade on the front.
