Buying a Head when you just can't afford a whole doll

Oct 17, 2013

    1. I'm so anxious to buy my first SD doll that I was considering just buy the head Elfdoll Sooah and then waiting till I can afford the body. Anyone done this? Just curious if it will satisfy my desire for this beautiful doll or will I regret not just waiting to buy the whole doll when I can afford it!

    2. Happens all the time. I bought my most recent doll that way; got the head on a screaming deal, then got him a body later. Got my Yder that way too, come to think of it. Whether or not that works for you personally, though -- that's up to you, because everyone approaches doll purchases differently. But it's far from uncommon.

(Also Elfdolls are wonderful. I own three.)

    3. I did that with my Kelly. It was hard finding a body that I could afford and that would fit, but at least I had the head to work with in the meantime. I'm glad I did get him though and I probably saved a few $$$ for sure doing it.

    4. I bought my first (and only so far) doll that way. He was a limited edition, and I didn't have enough money saved up to buy a full doll, so I just went ahead and bought the head. I'm so glad I did, too. Even though I didn't have a body for it, or even a faceup, wig or eyes, I was able to start planning the character in earnest, and it helped me keep up my enthusiasm for the hobby while I saved up for a body, which I was able to buy sooner than expected. Plus, my biggest guilty pleasure in the hobby is getting things in the mail, so by buying two separate pieces of resin, I got double the experience. ;)

I suppose, do whatever makes you happiest.

    5. my second dollzone mo who ive hybridized with a resinsoul body I got his head in a trade but wound up making him the dollzone mo I already had's twin but his character wouldn't be there if I hadn't happened to get the head in a trade. I got my little monica cliff's head for free in a raffle at the California coat BJD convention and bought him a little monica body on the MP later on, right now I have my little rebels hachi head which could only be bought as a head because little rebels doesn't sell bodies, my dollzone ying head I got in a trade who ive modded into a skull and I have bought a fantasy part for him but no body yet, and my angelheim kyle head still needs a body but I got him in a trade as well... in fact the only head ive ever gotten without a body simply because I couldn't afford the whole doll is my migidoll Miho... the rest I got their heads in trades and had to save up for bodies later LOL! but honestly im all for floating heads and hybrids, doesn't change the fact that you still get a beautiful doll in the end just means it takes a little longer to get there!

    6. I have done that 3 times already. The head is a must have for me while the body can wait and it's easier to get. My MSD dolls are hybrid either way, I always end up looking for a better body for my dolls^^

    7. Quite a few times....last time was yesterday...:thumbup

    8. Allll the time! I have a head sitting in my closet right now. haha I'm still trying to figure out what to do with him. But he's too pretty to let go.

    9. Jeps I did this as welll last year, I wanted not one but *cough* three boys before they were discontiniued.
So I decided to just get the three heads, and start looking for some nice bodies at a later date :)

As long as you are patient enough to either:
      1. Wait for the money to buy the body later,
      OR
      2. Spend the time it takes to find a nice hybrid body,
It will all work out fine :D

    10. If its a limited head I'd do it in a second! But if you add the price of a separate head and body vs the cost of a whole doll, the whole doll tends to be cheaper. At least from the companies I've seen.

    11. That's practically the story of my life xP;; I have as many heads as I have full dolls right now and it's because of several reasons (such as finding wonderful deals on said heads, or them being limited -or on occassion sold by the company as head only options-). It is entirely viable to buy heads and bodies separately no matter the reason c: after all the head is the most important part of the doll, you can always get the body later from whichever company -and DoA is a very good resource for hybriding as well- and if you're patient enough you can also find really good deals on bodies on the marketplace too.

    12. I've only ever bought one floating head because it was gorgeous & a great deal. I kept looking for a body for him but never found the right one so when I was in need of $$ I ended up selling the head since I couldn't afford a nice body anyway. I much prefer to buy whole dolls even if they're hybrids. I just haven't had any luck finding heads & bodies that would match.

    13. I have done this once. Head only was expensive enough (I'm student, I have life and rent to pay, so not much doll ordering here. :'D), but also I don't really like DollShe body. ._.
So only DS head here. I'm going to buy body from somewhere else, so my doll is going to be hybrid.

    14. I do it all the time, I've got 4 or 5 heads without body, when I don't have enough money to buy the whole doll (each time in fact XD).

    15. My first resin was a floating head. (I had a full doll on order but she hadn't shipped ... the head was ordered after her, but arrived first.) She's an Elfdoll too, a Yuan :D I ordered just the head because I don't like the Elfdoll bodies much, so now she's on a Miro body.

    16. I used to have a major problem with collecting heads because, while the entire doll wasn't in my budget, I so wanted that head/face-up combination and couldn't pass it up. I ended up with many floating heads and only ever committed to purchasing one body for said floating heads over the years. Instead of using my money to buy bodies, I bought more and more heads because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to obtain it later, it became a vicious cycle.

As long as you believe you'd be motivated to actually purchase the body later on, I think there's nothing wrong with buying the head separate from the body. For me personally though, I ended up with a closet full of heads and ended up re-selling later as bodies were never purchased. :(

    17. Most of my dolls I've aquired this way. Almost all of them are limiteds and getting them as a full doll was just too expensive to me. Add to that the fact that I prefer to hybrid them and I usually chose to buy them as head-only.

Right now, I still have a doll head that needs a body. It's just that I can't find the right body for him and so long as that's the case, he'll have to remain a floating head.

    18. I had the reverse problem for a long time -- a body I really liked, but couldn't find a head I wanted for it. I finally found a suitable head last week though so I can finally finish the doll. :D

    19. im going to that with feeple60 juri mainly because she isn't available as a whole doll but its cheaper than buying the full doll:)

    20. I'm actually considering doing the opposite! I want a different head on a fairyland chicline body so Im considering buying the body first because theyre limited production at Fairyland and I havent decided on a head yet. I don't wany to miss out on the body but its so expensive...
