1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying a new doll: with or without company faceup?

Oct 6, 2012

?
  1. I buy most of my dolls with the company faceup.

  2. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to get a custom faceup done by an artist.

  3. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to do the faceup myself.

  4. It really depends on the doll.

    1. Well? ^^

I prefer getting my dolls blank because I'll add a faceup myself... what about you guys?

    2. I buy mine with the company faceup because (at the moment) I can't do any on my own and it would take quite a while to learn - I would honestly be a little upset if I thought I ruined my own doll with a bad faceup. Every time I looked at it I'd be reminded of my own failure.

I'd be a bit afraid of sending it off to someone else, too, just in case something goes sour and my doll gets stolen or lost in the post or something. Also, I often find the company faceups very lovely and I would want to keep them around for a while. :D

    3. I prefer buying them blank and sending them off to a faceup artist :) Sometimes I'll really love a default faceup and will get it from the company, but usually I find I like the fact that my doll is sort of special.. Like I designed how they will look. It makes me feel bonded to them because even though I didn't literally create them, it's my vision and no one will have exactly the same faceup ^^

    4. Without company faceup, to do my own.

I'm a little bit braver about blanks dolls, though, because our local community has many good faceup artists, and I can easily commission them if I fail horribly myself.

    5. in general, it is based on how good the original face-up is, although i always customize the doll soon after the arrival.

    6. i am relatively new to this hobby, so i buy them with the company face up because i still don't know how to do it myself, would hate to spend thousands of dollars on something blank to keep at home...and then having to send it to an artist to some far away country, pay for face up, shipping in, and shipping out...besides, iam scared out of my mind that someone might keep my doll or doll part and never return it, as i've read it's happened before, i might be spending more getting the company face up, just to say, but i will be saving myself a lot of grief and hassle,no, for now i will keep ordering them as they are until i can start learning to do it myself, and for that i will just buy an extra head just for practice :)

    7. Depends. I plan to get most of my dolls blank and commission faceups...at least until I have enough skill and am comfortable doing my own.

However, I plan to get an DZ fullset Una and keep her faceup, because it suits her so well.

So really, it depends on if the company faceup looks nice (worth paying fifty more bucks) and if it suits the doll character to me. Aside from Una, and possibly DoD's Adolph, no company faceups have looked suitable, so most of my dolls will be bought blank.

    8. It depends on the doll. I usually buy them blank, but occasionally I buy the company faceup if I really like it. I plan on learning how to do my own soon.

    9. I usually buy my dolls with their faceup because I like the way the faceup looks. I can always do touchups on it if I need to :).

    10. It depends. If it's a limited doll, I will get the company face-up or if bought secondhand I will commission a face-up. I just don't feel that I have the skills to do them justice yet. I bought a couple dolls with the intention of doing them myself, but if I couldn't get them how I pictured so I sent them off to someone. If it's body blushing or fantasy parts blushing, I will do that myself since I've practiced more with it.

    11. I don't feel confident enough to do my own faceups so I get company ones. I've done painting customs on other types of dolls, though.

    12. I LOVE doing faceups, so I try to get blank dolls if I can. The only exception is if a faceup is PERFECT for a character, but the only case I've found of that isn't a factory faceup, it's an artist faceup on a second hand doll...... Man I wish I could buy that doll right now, it's so PERFECT for the character! Stupid layaways...

But anyway yeah. Faceups. LOVE LOVE LOVE doing faceups, and I'm finally at the point where I consider myself good enough to paint my own doll's faces. For a while I did friend's dolls and I had a practice head.... Now only two of my dolls have faceups I didn't do!

    13. It depends on the doll. My first two will have company face-ups since I don't have specific plans for them and their face-ups are plenty cute.

There will be other dolls I get in the future that I want to look a certain way, so they will come to me blank. Whether I attempt their face-ups myself or let someone else do it is yet undecided.

    14. My first few were factory-faceup, but I'm starting to want to actually start doing my own faceups. So, the two more recent dolls(one's currently an MSD floating head and the other has yet to be shipped) are without faceup.

    15. At the moment I'm getting the majority of my dolls blank and send them off to artists. Eventually I'd like to be able to do my own, but that will take time and money to figure out, and to experiment with!

    16. I usually get my dolls blank and do the face-ups myself. My goal is basically to be as dolly self-sufficient as I can, so I also make the majority of my dolls' clothes.

    17. For most of the dolls I've had so far, I've purchased them with the company face-up, as I love how Fairyland does their face-ups, and I have no plans on learning how to do my own face-ups--I tried and have failed! I think it's important to know where one's talents lie, and my forte is not in doll face-ups. However, I've acquired one dolls with a custom face-up from the secondhand market, and man, she is ever the cutie! And I've been discovering more and more how many awesome customizers there are...so I'm thinking that I'm going to eventually have all my stock face-upped dolls get custom face-ups by the artists whose work I admire...if I'm lucky to snag a spot on their waitlists.

    18. I don't trust my faceup skills being a newbie and stuff, so I'll stick to company faceups for the time being until I feel confident enough to do it myself.

    19. It varies with me. With Volks, you have no choice, and I have two of theirs. The rest...some came with default, some without. I think I like having a faceup when they come home...I can play with it sooner!

    20. This is my 1st post so here goes. I'm new to all this and bought my first with face up but took it off as I thought it made my tan girl look like she had bags under her eyes, so now she's with my son who is an artist and my fingers are crossed. I'm awaiting a JID I blank but some one in my area is going to do her face up so I'm excited 'cause I know her name and story already. But my next one will come face up!
