Buying an unplanned doll just to go with an accessory?

Apr 7, 2014

    1. I looked for a topic similar to this, but couldn't find one.

Have you ever purchased a whole new doll, one you weren't planning on at all, just so you could have a doll that goes with an accessory (wig, eyes, outfit, etc.) that you really love?

I have this wig that my DC Kid was wearing, that I absolutely LOVE, but I recently got her a new wig that fits her coloring and style much better. Now, I have no doll that can wear that beloved wig. None of the dolls I am planning to buy in the next few years will be able to wear this particular wig either, so it looks like it'll have to go into storage.

I now find myself thinking about buying a less-expensive doll -- one I wouldn't otherwise buy -- JUST so I can have a doll to wear this wig! It's crazy to me to spend so much money just so I can make use of a $30 wig, and yet I can't get the idea out of my head.

Have you ever been in this situation? What did you do?

    2. LOL, I definitely know the feeling. I have a limited edition wig that came with my Soom Idealian Branon. I sold Branon, but the new owner wasn't interested in the wig, so I kept it. I was glad, cuz I love that wig. I mean I really love that wig, lol. The color...the style...I want to put it on someone's head and leave it there. But alas, it doesn't suit/fit any of my guys. (Have I mentioned that I really love that wig?) So yeah, I'm despondent over its pitiful place in the spare wig box. But I figure that someday the perfect 9/10 head will come around, and since I don't want to waste its awesome coolness by dropping it on the wrong noggin, I will bide my time. Doesn't mean I haven't been tempted, though. ;)

    3. Do heads count? I got a body for a floating head (my first foray into larger dolls), and then discovered I need a bulky 70-ish cm, instead of the 60 cm I got. But I really like the body, so now looking for a head for a floating body...

    4. Keep the wig until the right doll comes along. I had a Liv wig for years til I got an RS Yo-SD and now that's her wig and it suits her so well.

    5. Yup! I got two pink wigs almost at random from Nine9Style because the dress I wanted was no longer in stock and I made up the cost of the order by having the wigs instead. I figured the wigs would go on my floating Bellosse head, but then I decided that the head I have wouldn't go with any of the bodies I have, so I searched for a head that would and bought an Oopnix Zid head... and the wigs don't suit her! So I'm keeping the head and doing something completely different with her and I still have these two gorgeous wigs I have yet to assign a head to.

    6. I haven't personally but my girlfriend did several years ago. She bought an old 4D wig that's no longer sold and ended up buying a Breakaway for it because it didn't suit any of our dolls. XD When the Breakaway was sold she ended up keeping the wig, and will probably be looking for another Breakaway or possibly an Ital to fill the wig again once we're in a spot where a new doll is a possibility.

    7. I've thought about doing that... more than I'd like to admit! But then, I'm totally crazy (in a BJD-way). *_*

There are certain outfits I've seen that I absolutely adore! I have outfits that I've bought without having a doll to wear them. And I've seen things and then thought of a doll I could get to wear them... It's hard to tell if I'm buying dolls because I really want them for themselves or for what they can wear, sometimes!

    8. I bought a Peakswoods Goldie so she could wear the clothes I didn't want on my other girls. XD Wigs too.

      Totally worth it.

    9. I really wish I was the type that plans everything out.. but.... sadly I am not.. so.. like over 50 percent of my current doll family isn't planned.. usually when I see a mold or a doll that comes to the doll marketplace I really love I go and get it! >_< If I have the money is.. I am totally impulsive!! But I am so happy that I don't do it too often.. -__-.. wait no.. I did just purchase, sold and traded 4 dolls so far within one and a half month.. >_< ..... maybe I need to stop talking.. Bad Bad Bad!!

    10. It is tempting! I am going to try to be patient. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way, though ;)

I think that makes more sense than what I'm thinking. At least you have most of a doll already. ;)

If only I could be so patient! I am going to try, but every time I think of putting this wig in storage for potentially years I get that itch to buy another doll >.>

Oh yay! Someone else with my thinking! I'm so glad I'm not alone in my craziness :D

I bet it's even more tempting to do with a rare wig. Mine is limited, but I still see it for sale from various dealers occasionally, so it isn't really rare.

Hooray for BJD crazy! :D I am pleasantly surprised by how many people so far share my crazy thoughts.

Lol! I have two dolls that were impulse buys, and they are my least favorite, so I'm afraid to do it again even though I am very tempted. Seems like it really works for you, though :D

An enabler! Please, keep enabling! Now I feel like window shopping in the MP again >.>

    11. I bought an adorable pair of Yo-SD kitty shoes that unfortunately are way too big for my Yo-SD. Hopefully one day I will find a doll who can wear those shoes.

    12. I was in a similar situation...I have 2 tinies but they are so serious and I said to myself "I need one who is smiling" so I bought another tiny just because he's smiling and not because I really wanted him or had a character/something prepared for it XD

    13. I bought a pair of boots for my little off-topic girl. Since the shoes were Yo-SD sized and my doll is the same height as a Yo-SD, I naively assumed that the shoes would fit her. Wrong answer. Do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollars, go directly to jail. To compound the problem of sizing, the boots had detached heels and laces that pulled apart at the drop of a hat. I was so determined to make them work that I replaced the laces, glued the heels back on, and tried to convince myself that my doll looked fine in the too-big boots. It didn't work out.

I've since learned that a resin Yo-SD is a lot chunkier than my little Ju-hwang is. I'd done so much maintenance on the shoes that I didn't want to get rid of them. Thus I tucked the shoes away for safe keeping and am now eyeing an on-topic doll that can wear them. I've had to cobble together a whole new character since I like for my dolls to have back stories, but no biggie. I'll probably be ordering Chloe this fall.

    14. Yes.

For the most part, I really only want SD sized dolls in my collections, and any smaller dolls would be children for them. But Minifee clothing and shoes are SO cute that I ended up buying a Minifee to wear all that stuff that my SD crew can't.

    15. No... but I have bought pieces with the idea that eventually I would have a doll who could pull that off.

    16. I was going to say no... but the more I think about it, the more I have to admit that something like that really was what lead to my Monkey King. I came across this gorgeous one-off outfit a few years ago that looked a bit like Chinese armor, and even though I didn't really have a doll at the time who I though would look right in it, I loved the outfit enough to put in a bid for it anyway. It stayed mostly-forgotten, packed away in the closet for quite awhile, until I was rearranging things and came across it again. The box happened to have been sitting with a cane I'd pruned from my black bamboo... Something I'd planned on making into a staff for the crew at some point.

Rediscovering those the two pieces together set off a proverbial lightbulb.

It took a little more searching to find the right doll for the project, but once the outfit and the staff (and later the tail, head-piece and circlet that I made for him-) were there, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

So, yeah. The Monkey King exists because of a random outfit and a piece of bamboo.

    17. I have one character that I've had a hard time finding the right doll for. He's been a character of mine for years and was designed to have leather coat with wool lining. Amazingly, Iplehouse made a coat for their EID series that is perfect. So I bought the coat on a whim; however, I did not own a single doll that would fit in the coat well. So a few weeks ago, I woke up to find that Iplehouse had decided to discontinue one of the EID dolls that I had been considering. Before I even realized it, I had purchased the doll and now he's on layaway. And now I'm seriously hoping that I didn't make a huge mistake by spontaneously buying him.

    18. I'm thinking of buying a new doll just to wear some extra msd clothes I love lol!

    19. not exactly, but I decided to start a collection of minifees to go with my feeples and one of the deciding factors in that was in the huge range of simply adorable clothes available for minifees

    20. Yes, I have done this. I saw several outfits that I just could not do without. Then after the purchase I thought. Now what. Yep! you guessed it. I had to adopt a few ladies this year. I still have a couple outfits that need a doll for. One of the adoptions was a full doll and she did not have the head I was interested in. I did find the head after a few months and now I have 2 minifee heads and 1 body. After seeing the head on the body compared to the head that goes with the body the head that came with the body seemed to match the outfit better than the that is on the website. So now I am also in need of another body to go with the extra head. The only area I have been able to control myself is in the wig department. At least I am waiting to have a doll to match a wig to. In face last night I just purchased 2 more outfits that I have no clue who will wear them. I guess that means 2 more doll adoptions. So much for that extra cash. The ladies seem to LOVE keeping my wallet empty. However I love them so much and they know how to get around me.
