1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying doll just for the gift?

Jun 1, 2014

    1. Sorry if a similar topic has been posted for this already. I was just wondering if anyone has ever ordered a doll just for the gift item? Right now Aileendoll has an event gift of their little tiny devil cats. I really like them but to be honest, I do not like the polymorph dolls you have to buy in order to get them. In fact, the only way to ensure you get one is if you buy the full set Cathy or Lucy. I have to admit that I considered it for awhile - buying the full set then selling off the polymorph doll later. But that's a lot of money to spend just to get the stupid event gift lol :sweat

So has anyone else ever been tempted to make an order just for the event gift?

    2. I kind of ordered from Doll Chateau because they had Russel as event gift. Kind of beacause I had been planning to get Agatha someday, but not that soon, and besides her, I had to order something else too, so I ordered Hilary, too (even if I had no plans for getting her).

    3. I've done it before, I'm not sure if I would do it again though, it took far longer than I would have liked to sell off the parts I didn't want it.
$800 doll for a pair of gift shoes which for some reason I decided I couldn't live without. :sweat

    4. Honestly one doll I want is DC Ada which was an event doll but I figure if I want one DC will open up Ada again (I hope one day they make her a permanent part of the lineup she seems to be more popular then Alberta)

    5. Ada is available until May 31st, if you're *really* quick, you might still be able to grab her Arashi Uchiha!

    6. I don't think I would personally buy a full doll for a specific event gift. I'm relatively new to the hobby so I guess that could change if I really liked the gift.

    7. I would see if I knew someone who wanted the doll, then I would offer to pay for the shipping in return for the event item.

    8. That's a good idea kage. If you have a friend or can find someone who is interested in buying from te company with the gift you want trading the event gift for shipping or something like that could work out really well.

    9. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's considered this haha.

Arekushia - $800 for event shoes? :o I do not think I could do that haha. I hope you were able to make back most of the money.

KageNoHoshimi - That's a good idea. I may consider opening up a split.

    10. Those little cats are adorable! I wonder if you could commission an artist to sculpt something similar for you? They don't look as complicated as a typical bjd…I don't even notice any joints on them. Commissioning an artist would also probably be cheaper than buying the doll just to get the cute kitty. ^_^

    11. I'd be afraid that I wouldn't be able to sell the doll I didn't want. I love those Aileendoll cats. I assume you've see the Sweet Cathy and Sweet Lucy cats that you can buy individually? They're a bit different from the event kitties, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. They've been tempting me . . .

    12. me too. those bigger cats are just too cute :)

    13. I bought a Full Set from Volks so I could get the complete outfit with shoes and wig. I realized I could use the body one it was here, so I only sold off the head and eyes. Once I all worked out the numbers, I did end up paying less for the outfit and body than they were going for second hand and the person I sold the head to was very happy since that was the only part they wanted. If I found a similar situation that would save me money, I'd do it again.

    14. idlehen, I was able to recuperate most of the funds, but towards the end I was getting worried and I began to regret my decision. =/
I think the remaining balance in the end was just over $200, which I can definitely live with, I just love the shoes.

I almost did the same thing for Fairyland's most recent event, I wanted that silly bow and quiver!
But finally I decided against, the shoes will keep me happy for awhile LOL. Still happy with both my decisions. :)

    15. Yes, I was thinking of getting the fullset (which includes Sweet Cathy or Sweet Lucy) then just selling off the polymorph Cathy/Lucy dolls since I like the jointed cats too. Or finding a buyer for them in a split. Well their ordering period is until July so I have some time to mull over it :)

Juxtaposition - Yes I've thought of doing but I know deep down I will always want the one from the company haha

idrisfynn - Sounds like that situation worked out well for you. If I could find a way to reuse the body then I'd probably jump on it.

    16. Personally, I don't think I would by buying a full set doll for a gift item, it just doesn't seem worth it to me, no matter how much I wanted the gift item. :)

    17. I'd love to, but I really can't afford her right now. I need to save up money.

    18. That Sweet Lucy is adorable! I'm very tempted to get her...

As for the original question, I did hold off on ordering my dolls once I heard an event was coming just to ensure I got an event item. I didn't even know what it was gonna look like, but I'm glad I did. The new head looks promising. I can't wait to see it all done up.
But I don't think I'd buy a doll I don't want for an event item unless I fell head-over-heels for it and knew that the doll I was ordering would be able to sell for a good price. With the wait times for Fairyland a new doll available right away would likely sell for a good price quickly, so I might consider it.

    19. I've also held off; I had my order ready, had the money, and knew there would be an event coming up in the near future, so I held off on actually placing that order until the event started and I could select the event item I wanted from it. Similarly, I pushed up another order to take advantage of the event going on so I could get items from that, as well. And another of my older dolls was ordered at a time when he would come with some very nice gifts, as well! (All from the same company, no less.) I haven't ordered specifically for the gifts, but the gifts have definitely influenced the timing of my orders.

    20. Fleuro- Yeah, same. I'm relatively new too. Only 2 years in, really, so I haven't seen many of those kinds of event sales.

      That said...

KageNoHoshimi-That is a great idea. Sounds better than buying a doll you will want or need to sell.

..Uh if you were going to sell the doll you were getting in the event just for gift.
