Buying more dolls when you still have unfinished ones

Feb 3, 2013

    1. I just ordered a new doll and find myself wishing for him to not arrive until my others are all complete, so I'm suddenly sewing/knitting/crocheting/painting face-ups (now the weather is OK) for days in a row (almost, there are breaks for other hobbies and sleeping) to get them finished and fully dressed. I just suddenly REALLY want my characters properly shelled by the time he gets here.

Do you buy dolls finish later? Do you not order your next doll 'til the last is done? How do you feel when you have several blank dolls staring at you? How do you feel when people keep ordering dolls but have several unfinished in their collection?

Edit; Just a note because I think people are going to mention it 100 times. Yep, a dolls look is never finished-finished, we all swap out wigs and eyes and re-do face-ups seasonally or whenever we feel like it or sometimes we'll drastically overhaul a dolls complete look. What I mean is when you have dolls on the way when the dolls you already have still don't have face-ups/eyes/wigs/a full outfit and never have.

    2. Bron, I think you will find that a large majority of people on here are just like you, and will have a doll or two still "unfinished" while more are on the way! BJD's are a strange addiction!
I sum it up to the long periods spent waiting to receive your doll. It's just too easy to find a new doll/sculpt that you "must" have in the 2-3 months you spend waiting for your last order to arrive.
Heck, my one MSD doll doesn't even have any clothes yet!
I have a few headless bodies myself. I keep meaning to look for a head, but always manage to find another doll or two while searching for one!

    3. Also there's the erratic arrival schedule of our beloved resin people. I ordered my second doll in November, and a body for a floating head six weeks later, thinking I'd have a few weeks to work on the one before the other arrives - now it looks like they're going to be here at about the same time (they're both on their way right now). So there will likely be a hold-up, what with the weather not really permitting to spray MSC outside and stuff. I haven't blushed my first doll yet for the same reason. I think it's always worse in winter.
I did prepare clothes for the second doll as she's the same size as my first, maybe I'll find a dress for the other one before I can make her actual clothes, and I've got wigs for both (failed to get eyes for the floating head so far), so they won't be blank and bald and naked all at once. :sweat

    4. None of my dolls are finished, but I keep buying new ones :sweat

    5. Guilty, I always think "Ok now I won't get any more dolls",
and then ............ I suddenly have more on order.

My dolls have pretty complex backstories, and sadly I also have a real life :crushed
so it takes me a long time to be able to complete any dolls, and that won't make me pass up new dolls I really want. ;)

    6. I dislike having unfinished dolls. I wouldn't be comfortable purchasing more dolls if I had several that needed serious work for me to feel satisfied with them. I'd feel like I was constantly playing catch-up, and I hate that feeling.

That's just for my own dolls, however. If other people have unfinished dolls it doesn't bother me. They could have an army of blank, naked dolls and if that's what they want, go right ahead~

    7. I'm find with having a work in progress doll and buying another in the mean time. Then again, I am the Queen of Unfinished Projects. All of my teenies need their fantasy parts blushed, but I just got my first MSD a week or so ago. My new girl at least has her eyes and wig, but if another must have doll came along, I would abandon my efforts to get her a proper outfit and shoes in a heart beat.

I am the kind that takes forever to "complete" a doll, but I do so enjoy the journey.

    8. My girlfriend is like that she REALLY wants one doll 100% finished before she gets a new one, but for me some of my dolls require costly/skilled mods to finish them and I either haven't had the guts to do it myself or found someone else to do it for me. So my first doll who I received about four years ago is technically unfinished, and I would like to try getting her an 'upgraded' wig. This year I am trying not to buy any new dolls but instead finish all the ones I have. So new wigs/eyes/face-ups and tattoos/mods all around not to mention new clothes!

    9. My dolls are forever unfinished, it seems. Either they require customization that I don't feel confident to do yet and/or, out of nowhere, they decided they needed a revamp. I don't let this stop me from buying, though. I just try to be careful because, while I don't mind my dolls being unfinished/needing a change, I hate adding to the load right now, I have way too much going on. :D

As for other people and how they handle their dolls, I don't care. Since I have unfinished dolls around while buying new ones, I can't judge people for doing the same. There's so many reasons for it that it'd be silly to judge anyway, whether I have unfinished ones myself or not. :D

    10. I really want to get mine finished, but I bought the blank doll to save money and my poor DiJae has been sitting there for over a year now, just waiting for a proper faceup. ;-; I'm just uncertain on how to get it done.

    11. oh gosh I have been going crazy buying heads recently. I really want an Eliya minifee head, but I will see another and be like I NEED that one lol so silly but yay to all these heads arriving!I wonder when they will get bodies haha

    12. I don't believe a doll is really ever "finished". For me the day I don't feel like changing something, be it a wig, eyes or new clothing for a doll is the day that doll will be " finished " that is to say that it won't really interest me anymore other than as a lovely lifeless knick-knack on my shelf. I love BJD's because they always have the possibility to change.

    13. I buy everything I can get, I order new dolls when the others are not even made or shipped out. I buy new dolls before I even have plans for the others I have already bought. It's impossible for me to finish a doll immediately so I could order another one. It takes pretty long to find a style I like and to find the matching clothes and wigs and eyes and fanstasy parts to complete that style. So I buy a doll whenever I see one that I really want when I have the money to buy it, no matter how many unfinshed dolls I already have.

    14. This. For me, a doll is finished when I've gotten the right eyes, and the right wig. That's it. The rest, outfits, shoes, backstories, pictures- those are all secondary. I don't change my dolls eyes, or the colour of their wig once I've found it, and although I'm happy to change everything else, I like those two things to always be constant. So once the doll has that, I'm happy.

    15. Jany, I can see the weather/msd thing being a big problem for people.
I couldn't face-up over winter, but now the weather seems OK and the snow is gone so I have no excuse for blank dolly faces!

Milky Tea, that playing catch-up feeling is exactly the one I got too :/
I suddenly felt really bad that only one of my five felt 'finished'. I suppose other people would've considered two of mine fine, but I think that other one needs its face-up redone.

DebbieDollyDoodles, oh I could see myself doing something similar. The idea of buying heads is quite attractive, it's cheaper and you still get something to play with sooner!

DominiqueB, yes of course, I think everyone does this, but I couldn't think of another word!
I just mean that my dolls aren't presentable and I felt uncomfortable with another blank naked doll on the way when so many of my dolls still need work.

    16. Even my eyeless/wigless floating heads have faceups because I make it a habit to paint them early on, so I can play with adjusting their faceup later as I go.
My dolls are never technically finished; I always sew and buy things for them, though, so I can't relate with that rush to get everything together before a new doll arrives. I do like to sew something for the incoming dolls before they're home however; it feels like I'm making a little gift to welcome them with and that feels really good to me (it's almost the reverse than hurrying to do stuff for the kids at home)
In general, I suppose I'm one of those people that finish their dolls as they come though...

    17. Finished? Boy, there's a concept. I have sketches and plans and fabric stashed for so many different sets of outfits, etc. There's also the itch to have a new doll every now and again. What I don't have is a surplus of time to realize all my plans. Given the highly transformable nature of these dolls, can you truly ever be 'finished' with one? That seems like a temporary condition at best, and in the meantime, the companies keep producing new muses.

    18. I don't know if my doll could ever be considered "finished". Her faceup is done, and I don't ever intend to get her body blushing, and I'm halfway through making her first outfit. But I know that I will think of other outfits for her, her one outfit isn't going to be the only thing I make! So since I have no ultimate goal, my dolls will always be both finished and unfinished at the same time.

    19. Layn, in this example the way I'm using the word 'finished' can be used to describe your girl.

For clarification, what I meant is that I had 2 dolls with no face-ups, one doll with a face-up I was planning to redo, 1 doll who doesn't even have one complete outfit of her very own, and a couple of dolls I need to make jackets/coats/cardigans for. I would also like to make them various changes of outfits/accessories. I wanted all of this stuff completed by the time my next doll arrives. This doesn't mean I'm not going to change things about them after he arrives. I just want a certain standard throughout my collection.

    20. I definitely buy more resin before completing my existing dolls because I like having multiple projects to work on. Sometimes I feel like sewing, other times I feel like doing face-ups so I switch back and fourth between dolls. I also get inspired by new sculpts that are constantly coming out, so I have the urge to start another project!
