Catproof doll displays?

May 3, 2014

    1. Debating purchasing a curio cabinet to display my dolls. They used to sit on a shelving unit built into the wall, but now I have 2 cats and dont want to deny the cats access to my bedroom as i enjoy spending time with the cats and have been storing the dolls in a cheap walmart rubbermaid storage tote box thing.

There's a curio cabinet on Ikea for $65 bucks that looks pretty good except Ikea's product description scares the heck out of me. It says if you bump into the cabinet the glass can spontaneously shatter. I don't want my cats to get hurt, nor do I want the shelves to shatter inside and the dolls to come crashing down to the ground.

I really like the Pulaski half round 72" curio cabinet and it's even lighted inside. it's about 400 bucks online, which isn't really bad as far as doll-hobby stuff goes. I'm just wondering if there is a cheaper cat proof solution. My cats are very smart and can open latches - like their carrying case/crate latch when they go to the vet, or randomly open cupboards in the house.

I collect both MSD and SD dolls, so for a proper display, I need it to be at least 30" high inside measurements. I'd like one with some depth to it so I can add doll furniture or diorama type options. That's why I'm sorta leaning to the curio cabinet solution. It locks, it's glass on most sides, some are backlit, etc. And the adjustable and/or removable shelves means it can accommodate dolls of all sizes since the entire unit inside without shelves is about 72 inches tall, so I could fit 3 rows of MSD or 2 rows of SD or 1 or 2 rows of MSD with 1 row of SD :).

Just looking for ideas on how to create catproof doll displays :)

    2. Have you thought about putting them on a high shelf? All of my cats have a hard time getting up to the top one because there's nothing for them to jump off of that can get them up that high. It's almost at the ceiling of my room but I'm 6 foot tall so I don't have a hard time reaching them.

Other than that, I'd go with the more expensive curio cabinet. Ikea leads to nothing but disappointment.

    3. I have a glass door fronted cabinet from Ikea that has movable glass shelves in it, and it has moved house once without being damaged. I don't have BJDs in it, but other dolls and art. Our cats are pretty smart and haven't gotten into it. I want to make space in it for my BJDs so I don't have to keep them in their boxes. No idea what its called but could look it up later.

    4. LOL smart cats... and up high does not mean anything to a 'climber'... I had a cat get on to a shower curtain rod once... ><... will=way... And cautions are there to cover the sellers/makers buts so they will caution you to hell and back. Also there is nothing on the planet that can't be damaged or broken by accident... don't over think things... be reasonable. And about 'movable shelves': some points
      - one has to be fixed securely in place for structural reasons, typically in the center or there could be 2... make sure you know ahead of time.
      - the issue above can affect the placement of 'other' shelves. I have NOT bought many shelf system because the fixed shelf does not allow for enough space or wastes too much.
      - many cupboards and curio's do not allow for shelves to be placed just 'anywhere'. Unless you want to be drilling extra holes in a 400 dollar cabinet. As for cats bumping and shattering glass... if it's that fragile why would they be able to sell it? That one is just weird sounding. or an 'over caution'. As an owner of 65-70 cm dolls and slave of 2 (would love to be) destructive cats I suggest "seating for the dolls or set ups where they can be 'discretely' supported (ie. tall doll is blocked from falls by another set type prop like behind a table). But chairs and sitting can also allow for shorter shelf heights too ^^.
      - if you have a solid (not all glass) shelf/cabinet unit... think about 'acrylic' doors. less breakable.

I have spent a year getting my cats used to the sight/smell of my dolls and sill they will go up on the doll shelf... cats are not easy to teach but sometimes exposure and lead them to 'ignore' it after a time lol... But when it's new you have to be 1000 times more watchful lol.

lastly if you use stands for dolls don't forget to add the height of the stands base! you x cm doll will really be x+base height tall (made this error putting up shelves for Barbies decades ago lol. ... oops ^^

    5. :) I dunno how wide spread the problem is - a real life friend has the same ikea cabinet i was considering and 4 cats and says they have bumped it on ocassion and that she has moved twice with it. but on the ikea description it states ""Handle with care! A damaged edge or scratched surface can in exceptional cases cause the glass to crack suddenly. However rarely into sharp fragments and only into small pieces. Avoid collisions from the side - this is where the glass in most vulnerable." and I found this with photo evidence: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1237642&h=lAQGnoNPI -- I know nothing is catproof, fully :) but there has to be a better solution than just using an "open" shelf. There are some totally cute new msd sized dollhouses on the market, but I cant figure out how to catproof those any easier than a bookcase/shelving unit lol.

    6. I have some older commercial-grade cabinets from Ikea with glass fronts and adjustable shelves. (Looks like they no longer sell them.) It doesn't work well for taller dolls, fyi, but my cat never managed to get into them.

    7. Have you tried your local thrift store? I have seen quite a few cabinets like that and since they're older they are made more solid than today's disposable stuff.

    8. I have that cabinet, it works wonderfully. I have one that I use for my Pullips and Dals, and it's been both cat proof and dog proof. I'm sure if you whack the glass it can shatter, but just merely bumping it won't hurt it. You'd have to whack it with a mallet or something. Or if you fell into it, it might break. But really, it's not as delicate as the horror stories have you believe. Mine survived two moves of over 200 miles and it's still perfect. The magnet that holds the door closed is pretty strong too. One thing I for sure would do is secure it to the wall with a small strap or bracket. It's heavy, but an acrobatic cat could potentially knock it over. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of mine.

    9. I have a curio cabinet that I keep some of my other collectables in, and it's definitely cat proof. It has glass doors which lock securely, and my cats basically have no interest in getting inside it because I keep it closed whenever they are around (I think they imagine it's just a big solid block of wood, rather than a hollow container full of things they'd love to chew :XD:). My curio cabinet is an old fashioned one that my parents owned for years before letting me use it, so unfortunately I can't recommend a brand or style to you :sweat

    10. :D Good to know, thats like the 5th or 6th person who has the cabinet and has confirmed that it is (relatively) well made. And i see the same curio going for 180 on amazon, so that also boosts my confidence some compared to ikea's 65 pricetag haha. I will probably pick one up next week. I miss having my dolls out all the time. :)

    11. I have the Detolf cabinet, and two cats, no problems at all, I have had it for at least seven years. The cabinet is sturdy, except that it has gaps and lots of dust gets into it which is the one drawback with this cabinet. And the fact that it has one shelf in the middle that has a permanent position made me give up having my dolls in it and now it only contains glasses. If I am getting a cabinet for my dolls, I will go for a custom built wooden cabinet with storage for dolliestuff in drawers on the bottom and display space on top.

    12. I think the caution about bumping the glass from the side refers to bumping it with something more substantial than a cat, another piece of furniture, for example. You can try training the d
cats to stay off the existing shelf, by placing contact paper, sticky side up, on the shelf (without dolls, of course). The cats don't like the sticky feel, and soon learn to avoid the area. They won't be able to tell that you removed the sticky to put the dolls there, so when you notice that they are consistently avoiding the space, add your dols. This also works for kitchen counters.
Also, try to move objects that "help" them gain access to the shelf (minimize the temptation).

    13. I have a glass cabinet from a store called Jysk which is pretty much the closest thing I have to an Ikea in my area. At the moment I actually use it for my figures but my girlfriend and I are planning on getting a second one for the dolls because it has proven to be catproof.

I would say that a cabinet like the one you're looking at would be ideal, but if you're really paranoid about the glass, maybe look into getting a wooden one made of MDF board or something similar? It wouldn't be as pretty and you wouldn't exactly be displaying the dolls, but at least they'd be safe and it's probably a lot more comfortable for them than a rubbermaid bin. :)

The only reason I would be against high shelves is because with my experience with cats, one of mine is determined to get to the highest spots available in my apartment and will stop at nothing to get there, even if it seems like an impossible feat. (we have a stacked washer/dryer that reaches the ceiling and he still managed to make his way on top of the dryer)
So if your cats are anything like mine, there's a chance the shelves might not work.

    14. I would buy something with less glass if you are worried about breaking it. I have a very solid cabinet from Ikea with glass panes in the doors (surrounded by a pretty solid wood frame)

    15. Oh dear, cats and dolls... I keep my most valuable dolls away from my cats' reach, in Ikea Billy shelves with clear glass doors. Affordable and not bad looking at all :)

    16. I have the exact cabinet you're referencing & that is a bit dramatic. They are incredibly sturdy & unless you are rough housing & negligent, the cabinet isn't going anywhere. Mine made it through THREE moves (FL to AL & back to FL) with a total of 3 cats. My Roomba slams into both of my cabinets 5 times a week & they don't budge a bit. Remember-- people writing reviews are generally over dramatic & there is probably more to the story that what they are sharing. The glass is too think for a 'bump' to shatter them.

    17. I have a similar cabinet, except that it is *less*sturdy. Placed against a wall the risk of bumping into it isn't that great - plus I watch it for cracks and other damage. Don't want my kittehs hurt either - they are far less smart than yours ;)

    18. I have a set of these:
      HEMNES Glass-door cabinet - black-brown - IKEA

They're stable, sturdy, cat-proof and nice quality for the price. All but the middle shelf are adjustable, too, so you can accommodate dolls of different sizes pretty easily.
