1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Charity works.

Jun 12, 2013

    1. I am not sure if this is the right place to start this thread. Please remove or move if it's the wrong place.

Has anyone sold dolls and donated the sales proceed to charity? Or is anyone planning to do so.

Which is the best platform to use? For example, there is eBay Giving Works (donation account). Is there a dedicated section in this forum marketplace for charity works? I read about scams with eBay donations, not sure how serious that problem really is. Other than eBay, are there alternatives? I like it that eBay generates an official tax receipt although not every charity option is listed.

      Thanks. :)

    2. I have done this before a couple of times. I've used Ebay (though I had to use Ebay.com instead of your local Ebay.de, which doesn't offer Giving Works), and that went smoothly and without problem. And you could always sell a doll normally through the Marketplace here and then donate the money afterwards!

    3. This is what I'd suggest and I think it's a lovely idea! You could state which charity you're hoping to donate to then maybe start an auction - the MP here does allow for auctions although there isn't a dedicated section. To avoid the impression of scamming people you could maybe get some sort of receipt from the charity in question?

    4. Harlequin-Elle I did not know the MP allow for auctions. How does this work?

Harlequin-Elle If I specify that my sale or auction is for charity in the MP, I'd have to get the tax receipt to prove it's not a scam, I think I can do that but if my charity is listed in eBay, I can spare myself this trouble by using eBay. Scams are the main worry for buyers in a charity auction. A while back, I read about eBay charity auction scams. It's sad. The issue of buyer trust and safety when using a forum set up (like the DOA) for charity auction is a real problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong keladry, the tax receipt from eBay is issued to the seller and not the buyer. I think eBay has everything all figured out, the system works. However, in a charity auction, we want as many people as possible to know and participate, otherwise, the charity will not benefit and the doll could possibly get sold below it's resale market value. There are too many rules in the DOA market place, I am unsure if I can publicize an eBay charity auction in the market place. keladry did you publicize in the DOA market place that you are doing a charity auction? How did it end? I mean, was the final sale price fair?

    5. I have, but it was always through live auctions at science fiction conventions, or special online auctions where all items were sold for the benefit of that charity.

    6. stargazer_i, you can sell a doll in the MP for either a fixed price or set it up as an auction. You can also mention what you're planning to do with the funds afterwards, just as many people state they need funds for household bills, medical bills, vet bills or other non-doll needs. However, DOA's concern in the marketplace is that the person who buys the doll gets the doll, in a timely manner, in the condition the doll was advertised as being. We do not track whether or not the funds eventually get used by the seller for the originally stated purpose.

If you want to avoid all worry of scams for potential buyers, you might ask your chosen charity to sponsor a sale on their site; essentially, donating your doll, and the buyer would pay the charity directly. (I don't know the rules regarding charities, if that's even possible for them to do, unless at a physical event.)

If you don't want a doll to sell for "below it's resale market value", then it's your responsibility to state a sale price or a starting auction price that you are comfortable with.

Most of what you're asking here has to do with making charitable contributions, and you'd be better served by doing a google or bing search for more details. A search for the "pass through percentage" for various charities is also a search that should be done, while you're deciding on a specific charity (the percentage of donation funds that actually get passed onto the charity objective, rather than being used for operational/publicity purposes).
