Choosing your first doll

Jul 29, 2010

    1. So I've seen some threads about how you felt purchasing your first doll and such but I'd love to hear people stories of how they chose their first doll! Was it love at first sight? Slowly grew on you? Saw someone else with one? Any advice for people shopping around for their first?

    2. My first doll hasn't even started to ship yet, but I can tell you what it was for me.

I actually thought my first doll would be Camellia from Rosette School, but I have always wanted a dark skinned doll. I was in the middle of ordering another doll from the marketplace when I was discussing the picture with a friend. He asked how detailed the dolls were, so I went to find pictures, I somehow found a link to a discussion about IpleHouse. I hadn't looked at their site in a while, so I checked them out. There I saw Benny.

My first thought was, she's gorgeous! She's unlike the other dark skinned dolls that Iple had, and she LOOKED African. I debated with myself at 2 in the morning "Should I get her? She's more expensive... But when would this chance present itself again?" So I ordered her.

      Edit

My first doll might actually be Sally from Dreaming Doll, with her it was love at first sight. I may have ordered Benny already, but if I order Sally she would be the first to arrive.

    3. Well I was just saving up for any doll still had no particular one in min I actually wanted a yo-sd boy but I was lookin throught the marketplace and i saw her and I feel in love xD it was hard to have to wait for her ... I was checking the post office status ever 2 hours to see where she was :D till she finalyy cane :)

    4. I just send the payment for my first doll today, so she will hopefully be here in a few months.
It's quite a long story how I chose her <.<
I was actually mainly looking at 1/3 dolls, but with the prices, I could see it would be a couple of years before I felt like I'd be able to afford that.
I had actually decided not to get one, when I found Resinsoul's Ai... I quite liked her, and she seemed relatively affordable, so I was looking at her for a while. While browsing around Resinsoul's homepage, I clicked the 1/4 dolls and their Mei just popped up, and she was adorable to me. For a while, I was completely sure I was going to get her, but at the same time, I continued browsing around, now looking a bit more at 1/4 dolls.
Looking at a thread here, I suddenly fell over a link to Island 's Wallis, and that was pretty much love at first sight. I was still thinking I'd get Mei for a while, since Wallis was a bit more expensive, but Wallis just stuck in my head. I loved the fact that she was a bit more mature, and the doll in general. I was a bit worried though, since no one seemed to have her, so I couldn't see any other pictures than what the homepage was showing.
But I showed my boyfriend some links to different dolls, and he said Wallis was the only one he really liked, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me.

I then did a googlesearch and found out that they had a sale, so you could buy an Island body and get a head for free, making it a lot cheaper, so even though I don't really have the money right now, I decided to do it before the offer ends :D

So yeah, I ordered her from Luxour Academy, who was super nice about answering questions and stuff, and now I'm browsing around for a wig and eyes.

    5. for me, i haven't actually got my first doll yet, but i do have some legs and eyes on the way :)

what sealed the deal for me, in wanting to get one was seeing the SOOM little shaman. I love that little skull cap, and the shaman theme is right up my street. the catch was, that I couldn't afford to get it, even on a lay-a-way. i've settled on the fact that i'd love this doll and i'll be looking for it on the market place, but to make sure i went through the entire DoA list of bjd companies and looked at all the tinys. it took a long time but totally worth it. I only found a few that I liked enough to potentially buy, but i still prefer the little shaman :)

This i think will be my first doll. it is certainly looking that way but it really helped to check out what else is on the market first. I got the legs especially to mod this doll too- I'm not a fan of the hooves on it, i wanted a different style.

I just hope it does appear on the market now. =p

if not, then i'm going to go for a DoD doc- SI / YU. one or the other. both are beautiful. ^_^

    6. I have received mine 2 weeks ago and it was definitely love at first sight but I didn't make an instant decision to just buy her because I have never bought anything catagorized "toy" this expensive before.
Not to mention that I knew nothing about BJD and had to start from zero but after taking a look at her photos from DoD's website again and again, I finally told myself I'll have her then a week later I made a purchase
and there she is .. lying inside her box which is placed on my bed :D

    7. I don't think mine has shipped yet, but I had been looking at various other dolls and found some I really liked, then randomly stumbled accross Christopher from Impldoll and fell madly in love with her face! I mean mwuahhhhh love at first site, made me forget about the others I had been oogling at. so i finally bought her..which really only took me maybe 4 or 5 days to decide, which is more sudden than i was expecting for my first doll! But I can't wait to see her beautiful face!!

    8. I found my first BJD at our local dollshop, a Narae. I had been admiring her for about a year when the owner mentioned she was going to sell her. I jumped at the chance and we even worked out a partial trade.

    9. When I first started looking at BJDs in 2000 the only company was Volks and I couldn't afford one at the time. It wasn't until five years later that I found a picture that so bowled me over that I had to finally buy a doll and it really was "love at first sight". Sure I had really liked a lot of other dolls but this one made me slap down money.

It must be harder to choose now that there are many hundreds of dolls to choose from rather than one hundred to choose from. I'd say first set yourself some stats like desired height, male or female, build of body, type of expression you want, features that are most important, type of clothing you want for your doll and start looking at how other owners have put together that sort of doll. Really you end up looking at pictures until something grabs you. Sometimes that takes a while. Good luck!

    10. My girl isn't here yet, but it was pretty much love from the first teaser shot for me. I kept going back to the teaser of her every day before she released even thought you could only see about half her face and it was a dark shot lol. Then when all the pictures were released I just knew that she was the one I wanted.

    11. Even before I had known too much about BJDs, I had been exposed to and always wanted a Lati yellow, but those little guys were too expensive for me and (even though I can't figure out why) I still have a difficult time justifying buying a Lati even though they're so darn cute! But when I started learning more and more about BJDs, I came across Luts and saw their Honey Delfs. It was the end of the world: it wasn't just the "want, but not a necessity" feeling I got from Lati's. It was "zomg, want so so so so much!" so I after I did some research, I ended up cashing in for a Lolly. Not sure what made me choose Luts over Lati, but I guess Luts was just more of my style. I will probably still get a Lati yellow or white one day, but an HDF, imo, was the perfect choice for my first doll.

Actually...I very recently bought an Volks MSD head and body secondhand, and even though it was 7 weeks after I ordered from Luts, I'm sure I'm going to be receiving my MSD girl first. Even though technically, Lolly was my first doll choice :P

    12. My girlfriend and I have plans for a large series of bjds in the future and in the meantime, we were looking for dolls we had not seen yet and at owner pictures to slowly fill out the list of what dolls could potentially go with each character. We started falling in love with the idea of bjds more and more, but the idea of this series was number one. We didn't want to start putting it together until we live together, so we were sort of torturing ourselves by looking at dolls.

Then we got marketplace access. She showed me a Soom Gem Laon head for sale, said it reminded her of my favorite actor, and that was it. My heart was won. I bought the head within two days and found an AOD body not too long after. We had never really considered buying dolls outside our future series until we saw him, and now we both own bjds that are their own dolls in and of themselves.

Someday in the future we will have our series. It's a tv show we both love that leaves so much up to our interpretation, most the personalities have flexibility, their faces are completely up to us, and hair and clothing are just waiting to be fleshed out. It will be very exciting, but for now, I'm so happy I have my boys. I know I will never sell my Laon, my Gerard means too much to me. <3

    13. Its quite mixed up how I ended up choosing my first. She isn't here yet, but I was just browsing around, trying to find that doll that just struck me. The first one was Gisselle from Souldoll, but when I saw some regular pictures of her, and not just the beautiful ones on the website, I was hesitant. Then, I saw Rebecca from Ringdoll. I read up on her, and heard nothing but beautiful reviews. The next payday, I put her on layaway, and I'm now doing my best to make sure that everything is ready for her when she gets here.

    14. Oh my, I wish we had doll shops around here haha.

    15. I haven't even ordered my boy yet, but I will be after I get my textbooks for college. I took a while to finally decide on what doll to get. I had gone from looking at Luts' Senior Delfs, to DOIs, Iplehouse JIDs, and Dollzone's Yuu and Chen. At first, I wanted a Senior Delf Annette for a character of mine. Then I thought about getting a DOI Crush of Luke. Finally, after thinking I was gonna get a Dollzone Chen, it hit me, and I am now getting a Senior Delf Abadon. So in my case, it was like....a belated love at first site because it took a while for me to realize that while I was deciding, I kept going back to look at Abadon. Now that I've decided to get him, I can see all sorts of new sculpts, but I haven't changed my mind at all!

    16. I haven't gotten my first doll yet but, many many many years ago I fell in love at first sight for the limited elf ducan from Dream of Doll...and I've given up on it because I realised I didn't really like dolls that were too big in size, that and it was long sold out and totally unaffordable to me at the moment (maybe in the future when someone auctions it haha)

But now I've fallen in love with the song of louis V from bluefairy, I don't know if they'd ever release him but I'm pretty set on getting a white skin Louis. His face reminds me of exactly how I imagine le petit prince to be <3

    17. Well, I haven't bought a doll yet. But my friend got me into them when he moved in with some people who had them too. At first I wasn't too interested but now I'm really excited to get one. n__n
I originally fell in love with Petsha as soon as I saw her but now I've fallen in love with Leya and can't wait to get her! X3

    18. I actually came across a doll that someone was using to model wigs in their store. I fell in love with the doll and tried looking for her but with VERY little success. I tried asking the owner but they never told me what model she was until I finally found someone else who had the same model and they told me. Of course I went on a hunt to make sure there weren't any other dolls I wanted but every time, XD I kept going back to her. It took me a little bit before I finally settled on her and purchased her from Mint On Card. I'm still waiting for her but you could say it was love at first sight. I do recommend that everyone do a TON of research on the doll they want, as not all dolls will look the way you see them as. I was just lucky that she was used by two different people and had a better idea of how she looked.

    19. I got Josslyn, a bobobie march, at a dealer's stall at Akon. What drew me to her was her skin tone: chocolate brown. The only dolls I'd seen people with were ns or bw and I was feeling kinda down that there weren't any darker ones. I saw her sitting way at the back of a cubby and I just stopped. There was a cute, happy looking little elf AND she was the color I'd been wondering about! I went back up to our room at the hotel to think about it and verify some details on the net, then went down and bought her. -cuddles her elf- Now I know that there are dolls in all shades of tan and brown, and my next darling is going to be Benny!
