Collection figures , BJD or both?

Dec 27, 2014

    1. * i dont try to get to the market*

      Hello!
      im a figure collector + re-ments.
and i got to see collectors on MFC that came from BJD hobby.
many who used to collect BJD and just moved to anime figures
i myself think to move from figures to BJD because my wallet wont be able to handle them both and my room isnt that big.
so i wonder , any of you came here from figure collecting ? any of you doing both? any of you left BJD and moved to figures (and come here just to visit)
what are the reasons for joining, quitting or eating both cakes ?
any adjustments made to be able collecting both?

    2. I collect figures and plan on having a small portion of BJDs (probably 6 at most). It is expensive to do both, for instance in the past three months I got 2 BJDs and 3 figures (Kotobukiya Kinomoto Sakura, Kotobukiya Li Syaoran, and Megahouse GEM Series Kaburagi Kotetsu). I really wanted to get another figure this month, but I decided against it because I had spent quite a bit on BJDs and BJD accessories...

Thankfully I have a general idea of the BJDs I want and they are not limited editions, so if I save up for them I will eventually be able to afford them. Figures cost less than BJDs (or at least the kind I buy do), so that's something I'm grateful for. Otherwise, I would be pretty screwed.

    3. I prefer dolls much better because they have a lot more freedom to be customized. I love getting to make them the way that I want. With figures, they cannot change. Their hair, eyes, clothes are permanent, and often their pose is too. I admire them, but I don't want to collect them.

    4. I dabble in a bit of both, since both are expensive to me. But i feel as if i am getting drawn to the BJD's more because of the story-making and characterization that you can't find in figures. Also i think the BJD's are more fun to photograph! But that's just my personal opinion. :)

    5. I collect figures AND dolls but I have very odd, very specific tastes so I don't buy a lot... thus most of my funds get spent on dolls. (in over ten years of collecting I've only amassed about thirty figures although I want at least just as many at this point). It can get very expensive if you just let it be, but considering the cost of figures don't easily rival that of a full, large scale doll on their initial release smart shopping can save one a ton of money.

    6. I'm not much of an anime fan, so I don't recognize many of the characters, but some of those figures are definitely cute. I can see why collectors interested in those might end up liking dolls too.

    7. I have both dolls and figures, but my figure collection is specific and quite small. I collect the Sailor Moon Figuarts line. :) I can do both because my husband and our roommate get the Figuarts for me for birthdays and holidays. ;) I have some Pop! figures but those, again, are specific. Guardians of the Galaxy and Elsa. My bjds are random. I buy bjds I like because I like them. I don't have a story for them. I also don't have a strict "look" that a doll has to fit. I have big, medium, and little dolls. I have realistic dolls and I have stylized dolls.

As for adjustments to having both cakes...a decent job and keeping either the doll or figure collection very specific.

    8. I have a pretty good amount of figures, but it's not as much of a hobby for me and don't spend a whole lot on them. I just like buying merchandise for my favorite characters lol. It's just different for me than my BJDs.

    9. While I appreciate figures, I enjoy BJDs more. I ended up selling most of my small figure collection and invested it in my BJDs instead. I enjoy the customizability and size of BJDs. I would add expressiveness and lifelike nature, but some of the figures I now casually collect are incredibly lifelike (Hot Toys, for example, but I'm not sure if they are classified under the definition of figures in this discussion since they are poseable).

    10. I have a lot of mini kaworu's figurines (from Evangelion) but I'm not crazy for them. Since money is a problem for me, I prefer to stay with my BJDs only...I also used to buy a lot of manga before but I stopped collecting manga...too much money ~_~

    11. The BJDs were definitely a progression hobby for me.
It started with Anime --> Figure Collecting --> BJDs --> Barbies --> My Little Ponies --> Miniature food.
      It's kind of backwards!

    12. My 1/6 dolls and their Re Ment outnumber the ball joints. As for other figures I cut down to just the roughly 5" Playmates Star Trek who came before the dolls and the 5" Doctor Whos but just the Doctors. The 1/3 dolls treat anyone smaller like a toy anyway.

The bigger dolls don't get anything like Re Ment, except for art supplies or electronics just like mine, because I don't have space.

    13. I have a really large collection of figures, but because that obsession preceded my entry into the doll world they're all packed away and unused. (I'd sell them, but the market for 2nd hand figures is somewhat less exciting than the market for 2nd hand dolls!) So "both, but not actively" would be my answer :)

    14. Figures have a great fascination on me (and not only anime ones... I enjoy a lot of the Mac Farlane's ones, just to say the first thing that comes in my mind) and I used to have some exposed in my room. I had a Eddie (the Iron Maiden's mascot) in the Phantom of the Opera version, a Ryuk from Death Note, a small Skull Knight from Berserk and a Vash the Stampede (that was my favourite). But...in some way the whole figure collection thing never grown on me so much, (maybe because they're someway..limiting) thought I enjoy a lot admiring them, and I completely stopped getting them when I started to collect 1/6 dolls and some action figures.
When the greatest part of my doll collection was in 1/6 I started getting some miniatures (I have some Megahouse sets) but now also this collection has come to a stop. Mainly because my BJD collection is almost all in the 1/4 scale, I think, so miniatures have become cute, but a thing for it's own sake for me and so they lost some charm for me.

    15. honestly i didnt see a figure yet that by default cost around 1,000$
but its very easy for me to get to this amount buying many figures in a month :D
i wonder why buying many figures for 1,000$ and buying 1 BJD for same price, makes me have mixed feelings

    16. i have to agree with you on this.
i only know nendoroids that have some customization freedom , but this freedom is also limited >.<

    17. really wonder what makes you but "THAT one"
how you decide what to buy?

    18. ofc they do!
i also collect many figmas! they are action figures, but still figures

    19. for me it was in the 90's when i was around 3-6
Barbies >>> age of 8-10 ponies >>> anime age of 11-12>>> around age of 15 figures>>> year ago re-ments >>> now i hope to make my first BJD purchase

    20. My guy and I buy some figures of our favorite characters but it is a fairly modest collection and mixes with action figures and my small art doll collection. I think we will continue to slowly add like I will with my dolls. I think it's nice to have lots of different things that I find visually appealing. Plus it's fun to have my dolls "hanging out" with everyone else.
