Collectors of floating heads?

Jan 13, 2013

    1. A couple days ago I was perusing another forum and saw someone talking about how they were planning to collect nothing but floating heads (With a shared body or two) and after making them all pretty wanted to display them on a shelf or something (I think she might have mentioned making stands for them too). I thought this was a really awesome idea and have decided to do it as well. ^_^

Obviously I'm still going to finish my two main character dolls and probably a few others but my main focus would be on the heads. Not only are they cheaper, but they'd take up so much less room and I could get a larger assortment of sculpts. >w<
Granted,I'd still have to get at least two bodies for them to share but it would be worth it in my opinion. I also make a lot of the clothes myself,so worries there either. :3

So some questions for you guys would be:

      Are you currently doing this?

If so how many noggins are you up to?

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD

If not, have you thought about collecting them?

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?

    2. And now to answer my own questions. :3

      Are you currently doing this?

Not yet,but I plan to very soon.

If so how many noggins are you up to?

As soon as my package gets here from Italy I'll have one that I bought from the second market a week ago. ^_^

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD

I plan to keep them on display. :3

If not, have you thought about collecting them?

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?

I think it's a really neat way to collect BJDs if your low on cash or space. For me it's the space and I just like the idea of it,plus I've recently come to realize there's only a select few dolls that I would want to have around as full dolls, and those are ones housing characters. By having a bunch of heads share 1-2 bodies I can still get a bunch of sculpts that I adore while still having space left over. ^_^

    3. Are you currently doing this?

Not actively or anything, but hey, if it happens, it happens.

If so how many noggins are you up to?

      Currently just the one.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD

He sits out on the sofa with the full dolls. Though since their setup is in my room, he doesn't really get many opportunities to creep anyone out that way...

If not, have you thought about collecting them?

I've had the stray idle thought.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?

I'm all for it-- I wouldn't collect heads instead of dolls, no, but when it comes to event heads, I would rather just have the heads and maybe swap them onto bodies now and then, than buy a body for each one...

    4. Are you currently doing this?
Yup, though Ideally I want to get some bodies, at least two heads to a body. Sharing saves money XD
If so how many noggins are you up to?
11 total, 3 of those are sleeping heads, two are layaway and 3 are on their way home to me.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD
I keep then in an American girl doll bathtub lined with a silk pillowcase. I call it "The tub of shame" because its a place that heads go when I don't have time to work on them or don't have money for a body. :(

If not, have you thought about collecting them?
I didn't think about it, but it just happened.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?

I think its a great way to save money when they share, Two of my heads are sharing right now, and its great. The only problem is never being able to photograph them together. The most important part of the doll to me is the face. Once I have the head of the doll I want I feel less anxious, like I already have the doll even though they have no body.

    5. This is a super interesting idea!

      Are you currently doing this?
No, but I do have my share of floating heads around here (i think im at 8 currently, but selling 2)

If so how many noggins are you up to? oops ^

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD I dont plan on keeping them floating forever lol but they kind of chill wherever. Most of them congregate under my little doll bench actually, so not exactly hidden but not displayed either

If not, have you thought about collecting them? I have seen other collectors do this but i dont think its for me personally

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)? There are some heads I think I would collect as just heads.. (im looking at you little skull!) and I have a few pukifee animal faceplates that luts has inspired me to sew temporary bodies for. On the whole though I think collecting heads is super cool and a good way to save in the hobby.. its just not for me. I like variety in my dolls so they have all different skintones and sizes... just having one body I feel would limit the diversity of my collection. I also like my dolls to interact with eachother on my shelves and in my photos and if there were only say, 2 bodies, I couldnt do group scenes the way I want. I have been tempted to do this for pukis though! I could just pop their little faces off and change expressions. But I havent decided on that yet... Id probably still want them all to be bodied XD

    6. Firstly, thanks to all three of you for replying. ^_^

      @ MilkBunny and ArouraAnn-
I had the same thought about photographing them as well, but figured if I really wanted to take pictures of more then two of them I can always behead my character dolls and steal their bodies temporarily. xD Also,Lol at tub of shame. > w <

    7. I thought about collecting lots of heads and sharing a body, but like... every blasted doll I want has a different neck size or resin color or something so that's impossible.

I think collecting heads only is interesting. It's good for using less space probably.

    8. Are you currently doing this?
I am notorious for collecting floating heads...its not something I actively aim for it's just wasier to buy a head than a while doll and I often can't help myself from buying the sculpts I want as soon as I can afford their heads. I would really like to get away from, I just recently sold quite a free in attempt to downsize my head collection.

If so how many noggins are you up to?
Right now I have three...a record low! ^^ I have plans for one more but hopefully that will be it.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD
Nahh, I keep mine in a drawer. Though, there was that time my boyfriend reached into a bin near my bead and pulled out a Breccia head :'D

If not, have you thought about collecting them?
      I wish I wouldn't think about it!

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?
I determinately try to make sure that every head I have has a body it is compatible with, even if multiple heads have to share said body. I don't like having floating heads, it's something I do to save money above all else. If I could afford to buy every head a body I would but at least floating heads allow me to collect more sculpts C: It can be a pain though if I want two dolls to be in a photo together or on bodies at the same time when they are both only compatible with one body that I own):

    9. Yeah,I've pretty much made it mandatory for myself to get at least a white skin and a normal skin body, probably tan too. The match wouldn't even have to be perfect, because I can easily hide that with clothes if I really had to,same with neck size. :3

Ideally I want to someday have a big cabinet full of them, all with face-ups/eyes/hair. xD If I ever won the lottery,or at least moved into a place with boat loads of room,I'd probably slowly acquire bodies. :3

Lol! That was probably fun to watch when he pulled that out. xD

    10. Are you currently doing this?

Yes, since the beginning. My first purchase was a floating head, while of course I got a body later, all of my heads that I had during the time shared the same body, so the body was never belong to any particular doll/character.

If so how many noggins are you up to?

29 heads, sharing 9 bodies. Bodies I've got atm: SD16G, SDGrB, NS/WS SDGrG, SD13B, DD, DDS, Yo tenshi X2
I'm quiet content with my body collection.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD

They're kept in the same space as my current 'full doll', which is a dark corner of my closet. They're neatly displayed for my own viewing pleasure. Dolls unnerve me sometimes so I prefer not to have them staring straight over my head 24/7.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?

I'm loving this system but more importantly I can't really see myself owning 29 full dolls ever. I admire those who have a large collection and still manage to find space for proper display or have the ability to manage all that junk that comes with owning lot of dolls. Seeing a large full doll collection squeezing in my tiny closet stress me out (even 8 is too much for me), so I'm always on the look out for down sizing. I like my house to look warm and fuzzy and have sun lit through out the course of the day, so a display spot in the living room or dining room for example would be out of question. In the end, a small handfull of head collection and a smaller body collection are what work best for me.

    11. Are you currently doing this?
      Not intentionally but yes.

If so how many noggins are you up to?
      Three.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD
      They're in a box.

If not, have you thought about collecting them?
      No.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?
The reason I have floating heads aren't just because I admire the sculpts. In Michiko's case, her sculpt was on sale. In Priss' case, her sculpt was getting discontinued. In Emi's case, her sculpt was already discontinued and I'd put out a WTB in the MP. I fully intend to get bodies for them (it's just a matter of money, of course), but I understand there are people who just get the sculpts because they admire them. Nothing against that, but for me it just seems like a waste of a pretty head ^^; Not to mention they just feel incomplete without, well, a leg to stand on.

    12. Are you currently doing this?
It's never something I set out to do but it happens.

If so how many noggins are you up to?
Two. One has been a floating head for over two years. :sweat The other is my BBB demon. He had a body but I tried re-stringing him the other day and it wasn't working so I took him a part and packed the junk body up. Rage-quit move.

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD
The pair are currently sitting in a basket on my dresser next to their fellow demon. You wouldn't notice them though since the rest of my collection is all around the room.

If not, have you thought about collecting them?
      No.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?
It's not for me. I like having the full doll and it seems like a hassle to move heads and clothing around when ever I want to play with a certain character. It's also very difficult for me to change heads, I really don't have the strength anymore. Just too physically demanding. So I wait and save for the proper body.

    13. Personally, I find this idea little creepy (I'm picturing someone walking into my flat and seeing a shelf full of prettily painted, bald dolly heads... like a collecting of slightly garish Faberge Eggs...)

But if it appeals to you, then as with every and any thing else in this hobby, please do go for it!

I'm probably a bit peculiar in the fact that I don't really see my floating heads as "dolls" until they've got bodies. I've currently got (gasp) seven I think, all of whom are waiting on bodies because I'm skint. I'm happier to leave them in the box or sell them though. I don't even paint my floaters until they've got bodies! Then I fill in the personality, occasionally change the names, and choose the eye and wig colours. Nothing happens until they're full dolls. Interesting idea though, and quite a novel one as this hobby goes!

    14. Are you currently doing this?
Not to display heads separately, but I do have floating heads at the moment.

If so how many noggins are you up to?
      2

Do you keep them in a box or out on display to creep people out? xD
They stay in a box until I get them bodies.

If not, have you thought about collecting them?
Not really, since it would be really difficult to find two bodies that match multiple heads (both propotions and resin color). Neither of my floating heads match any body I have color-wise so it just seems easier to get them their own body.

What are your opinions on collecting floating heads (With or with out shared bodies)?
I can see the practicality and space-saving pros of doing it this way. However, each of my dolls is their own character, so I can't see them sharing bodies. The head may fit and match the body of an existing doll, but that does not mean it's the perfect or ideal body for that doll. An individual body adds to their identity as much as a face-up does, in my opinion, and is part of the customization experience.

    15. I have not been doing this, but it sounds like a great idea and I wish I'd heard of it sooner! Thank you for bringing it up!

    16. Your quite welcome,I'm just glad I saw it on another forum when I did because I'd been contemplating getting another SD but he didn't quite fit any of my characters. xD

    17. I did this for quite awhile. At one point, I had 10 heads! I just paid off the body for my last floating head project yesterday. it feels GOOD to be done for awhile! I still have two heads, but no intentions of getting a body at all for one (he was my second doll, who has been upgraded, I can't let the head go) and the other character is currently a child, I just bought his adult head b/c it was a limited event head and I didn't want to miss out. He won't have a body for a few years.

    18. No. I had it once and I felt like they needed a body. Of course some can share a body, as most came from the same company, but I found I ike having full dolls. It feels more complete. So I have the room? Sorta. I mean, they have their space, which is the top of the dresser, the shelves of my bookcase, and the floor. The ones in the floor have chairs so they're not ON the floor. But it is a good idea. It would take up less space, lol.

    19. I don't intentionally collect heads, but somehow I seem to always have one or two on hand. I prefer heads to have bodies, but I have a few dolls with extra faceplates and I occasionally buy a head I've been wanting with the idea of buying it a body later. Then there are the doll companies that just make heads, so if I buy one, it may sit around for months until I find a body I like for it. I may have to resort to sharing bodies soon, if I buy any more heads, because I've hit critical mass for the big dolls and have no more room.

    20. I'm really picky about resin match, so I'd have a lot of trouble with this. The only time I had floating heads around was when I was waiting to be able to afford a body for one... it didn't last long.

I think if I were to start down this route, I would make sure I had a stand for them all, so they could still wear their wigs and maybe a scarf or something. Like these... http://eluts.com/shop/step1.php?number=281
