Dealing with a single piece torso.

Jul 11, 2012

    1. I saw a few threads that touch the subject but are not as specific. Still, if I missed one, please direct me on the right direction and delete this one. Thanks, mods.

Hi, I’m the kind of owner that really cares about how well a doll can pose, but I also really care about the looks and how well they can portray the character I want them for. I found a doll whose body I simply fell in love with, but it has 2 options for the torso piece: a single or one-piece torso or a three-part jointed torso.

Normally I would go for the jointed torso, but the single piece torso has such beautiful details that the jointed torso kind of lost, so I don’t know anymore. [There’s also the funny “flesh colored underwear piece” look that makes me hesitant].

I could get both torsos, but that would be quite expensive for me and would take me a lot more time to save up for it. So now I’m just trying to decide on which one I’d rather have, and I think a good way to do this would be collecting people's thoughts on the subject, especially from those who own dolls without jointed torsos.

Your experiences, suggestions, ideas, anything is welcome.
I’d rather like to hear the whole experience/thoughts any way you want to tell it, since I believe you could give me more useful information than what I’d get by just asking specific things, but here are a few questions anyway:

What’s the size of your doll?
Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?
How many things can you do with your doll?
Do you recommend a single piece torso?
If you don’t have one, what are your thoughts on them and would you ever own one? And why/why not?
Maybe you don’t own one but at some point you dealt/played with one, what did you think about it?

I especially want to know what people that actually own one have to say.
But any opinions, even from people that haven't dealt with dolls without a jointed torso, or if you had a bad experience, I would like to hear it and know why you wouldn’t recommend it. Etc.

Anyways, I hope you can help me out.
Btw, the body I’m personally talking about at the beginning of this post is Spritidoll’s elegance boy body, I adore the little “depression” he has because of the ribcage. I think it is incredibly adorable.

    2. I have owned and currently own non-jointed torso dolls. They are not for me. :( But I realize this is very personal and subjective. My favourite body is the Dollshe DSAM35s which has the most articulation in the hobby! I find the non-jointed torsos impossible to work with but admit that aesthetically they are very pleasing. There just is not enough pose-ability in that stiff torso for my photographic enjoyment.

    3. Come to think of it, both my SD10s (male and female) are on a single piece torso. I don't even notice it compared to my other dolls, but then again I don't try to put my dolls in wacky poses. I do think the single piece looks really good though and that's pretty much all I care about.

    4. What’s the size of your doll?

I have a K-doll head on a Delf Type 1 Boy body, which has a single piece torso.

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?

I bought this body because the resin color matches the K-doll resin. Pose-ability is somewhat important to me. I like being able to put my dolls in various poses, but I'm more concerned with the face and body working for the character I have in mind. :3

How many things can you do with your doll?

The range of motion is not as good as you would have in a doll with a jointed torso and with double-jointed knees/elbows. However, I still feel I can get a fair number of poses out of him, and I don't necessarily need extreme poses for this particular character.

Do you recommend a single piece torso?

I do recommend single piece torsos as I think they can be very beautiful. Also, tight stringing, sueding, and wiring can go a long way in helping achieve more poses. It still won't be as pose-able as a doll with more jointing, but it can help. I tightened the stringing on my Delf body and hot glue sueded him, and he can hold poses better now.

      Hope this helps a little!

    5. I have 5 MSDs and 1 SD, and none of them have 1-piece torsos. I will say that 1-piece torsos do look really pretty, but I don't think they're for me because I like my dolls to sit and slouch naturally, and I like the possibilities offered by jointed torsos.

    6. What’s the size of your doll? I own both one-piece and two-piece SD torsos.

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you? There was a time when poseability was more important to me. I owned a one-piece torso and didn't like it for that reason so I sold it. I've changed since then and now I don't have many demands in the poseability department but aesthetics are extremely important. So now, I own another one-piece (despite thinking back then that I'd never go back to them) and I'm happy with it.

How many things can you do with your doll? My dolls take turns sitting in a chair. They've definitely become more like display pieces and I don't play with or photograph them much. I mostly like making clothes for them nowadays, which is why a nice body shape is more important than poseability. I've actually never even bothered to really figure out just what a one-piece torso is capable of...

Do you recommend a single piece torso? For me, the only downside of the one-piece is that I find it more difficult to string. I think they are nice and would recommend them if looks are important. I will also add that I've owned some two-piece torsos where the joint is almost useless. So it's worth checking out the two-piece torso you're thinking of buying for desired poseability, or you might end up with something that's basically one-piece anyway.

    7. Out of the 25 or so dolls I own only two of them have a single piece torso: my Volks SD10 girl and my Orientdoll So.

I purchased the tiny many years ago before there were a lot of options for bodies. She was also my first resin doll. The only thing I had to compare her with was my off-topic obitsus which can do some crazy stuff. My Volks was purchased about 3 years ago. I didn't really consider pose-ability when I got her. I was more concerned with her face.

Both dolls have decent posing but I've also tightened their stringing. The tiny also has been wired. I don't do a lot of crazy posing with them but they look very natural when displayed, especially my SD10.

Would I recommend a single torso? It really depends on what you plan on doing with them. My dolls spend most of the time being displayed so I'm not too worried about holding or making complicated poses. If I was I'd probably pass on a single piece torso.

    8. What’s the size of your doll?
      About 57-58cm, she's a Volks FCS Nono with a one-piece torso.

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?
I was "upgrading" my standard Nono, which came with a single-piece torso by default. I could have gone for the jointed SD13 torso, but for this girl, I decided to stick with the single piece torso for its beauty and ease of handling. Some sentimental feelings probably came into play as well. I am actually very picky about posing, and normally prefer to have the best posing dolls possible. However, I have learned through experience that sometimes stability and aesthetics is more important to me than range of motion, so I was willing to make an exception for this one-piece torso and learned to love it.

How many things can you do with your doll?
She is easier than most big dolls to pick up/hold around the middle as her torso is solid and there is no worry about it moving or a piece slipping out of place. She is also a very stable sitter -- on my lap, on my desk, wherever, I don't have to worry about her flopping/jerking around. She's also great for carrying in one arm (well, if she wasn't a little lead weight that is, thank you Volks resin! lol).

Do you recommend a single piece torso?
Yes, though it depends on what you want to do with your doll. If you like to artfully drape your doll over props/furniture, or do photoshoots with lots of twisting and turning poses, then a single piece torso will probably drive you nuts. But a single piece torso definitely has its pros.

Really, it is a matter of personal preference. Good luck with your choice! :daisy

    9. If you intend to keep your doll mostly naked or shirtless or with an open shirt, go ahead and get the one piece, because it's beautiful and you get to see it often. If you intend to keep your doll mostly dressed, then get the jointed torso because you can get more poses and they will look more natural under clothes.

    10. What’s the size of your doll?
I've owned SD size (Ariadoll Narvy) & 2 MSD size (Unoa 2nd & Orientdoll Il).

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?
I purchased all three because I thought their body sculpts were beautiful aesthetically. Pose-ability is important to me to the extent I like my dolls to look natural.

How many things can you do with your doll?
The SD girl mainly lay flat sleeping because I found her so difficult to pose sitting up naturally; the Unoa and Orientdoll mainly stood on their stands for the same reason. They looked 'stiff' and tense.

Do you recommend a single piece torso?
If you have a choice, no I wouldn't- I enjoy posing my dolls naturally, and I was unable to achieve this with any of the three...that's why I don't own them anymore- it was quite frustrating.

    11. What’s the size of your doll?
I own a Heisejinyao (65cm), Luts Delf (60cm) and a Unidoll Real (about the same size), also a Leekeworld D Tiny (26cm)

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?
I bought the large ones because of look of their body, they look awesome without the torso joint. About the Leeke tiny, I've bought the body after I already had his head at home and thought he deserves a body of the same company... was a bad decision in the end...
Usually it's not too important for me if my dolls are awesome in posing for foto-sessions, I have them in doll stands most of the time.

How many things can you do with your doll?
Both large dolls are posing quite well, they can sit and still look natural in different positions. The tiny one is terrible compared to them, he can't even sit well and his whole torso is too heavy for his tiny legs, so standing is almost impossible without good patience.

Do you recommend a single piece torso?
Only if aesthetical look is more important than posing for the buyer.

    12. Thank you very much to everybody that has shared their thoughts so far!
I'm leaning towards a jointed torso, but this is really interesting and gives me a lot to think about.

Anybody else please feel free to keep posting your comments/replies, I'm loving reading what everyone has to say about this subject ♥.

    13. Funny you are heading for the same body as me.^^
(I know what you mean with this beautiful ribcage and this depression underneath * ^*)

I personaly don't own a single piece torso nor do one of my friends.
But like most people here already mentioned the biggest pros for a single piece torso would really be the aestetics features, while a jointed torso has it's poseabiltiy.

The threads about the elegance bodies mostly cover the reviews for the jointed one an he seems to pose pretty nice. But I also have seen some pictures there and in the market place from single piece torsos which were beautifully blushed. It was really tempting to probably get one of them.

In the end for myself the poseability is sliiigthly more important to me for this character for whom I need the body. Even with the fact he will be seen shirtless a LOT. (The idea of getting both bodies is good °_°)

    14. Ha~ That's cool, when you get yours please post pictures! Spiritdoll's elegance body is just really beautiful ♥
All these comments and other things I've read really got me thinking. The Character I need the body for has a twin brother... who knows, maybe in the future I could get his brother with the single piece torso and just switch the heads from time to time? For now I think I care about the poseability a little more as well, especially it being my second doll, and first SD.

    15. I have a couple dolls whose 2-piece torsos are so stiff and unable to pose that they might just as well be single piece! A single piece wouldn't prevent me from buying a doll with an attractive body but it's definitely something to be aware of if you're concerned about how well your doll will be able to pose!

    16. I enjoy lots of variety in my dolls, so I'm glad to have a doll with a jointed torso and one without the joint. I like them both, but because they're so different it's sort of hard to compare them.

What’s the size of your doll?
      I have a 70cm with a jointed torso and a 68cm with no joint.

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you?
Poseability is important to me because I like to play with my dolls (as opposed to only displaying them), and my first doll came with a jointed torso. But I got the single-piece torso because it came with an uncommon head sculpt that I just had to have!

Do you recommend a single piece torso?
The single-piece torso is really nice--more aesthetically pleasing than the jointed torso, in my opinion. But that won't matter as much if clothes cover the torso most of the time.

    17. I own the jointed Elegance boy body, and it is really lovely. I was in the same position as you are--I loved the look of that unbroken chest! But now that I have my boy all put together, I'm very glad to have gotten the jointed torso. He can strike many natural, easy poses, and the jointed torso actually gives the impression of a little more maturity to the body, which seemed to me to be quite young.

I love the way he can slouch. :aheartbea

    18. so far i only have peiced torsos but who knows what the future holds?

    19. What’s the size of your doll? My Doll is an SD but I also have a MSD both single jointed in the torso.

Why did you decide to buy that doll/body? And how important is pose-ability to you? I bought both these dolls mainly because of their faces, at this time I was focused more on looks than pose-ability. Now I regret that they don't have more joints. It makes posing for elaborate photos quite dificult.

How many things can you do with your doll? I can do quite a bit like slouching sitting up straight and leaning slightly to the side.

Do you recommend a single piece torso? Honestly I would recomend more joints depening on what you intend to do with your doll.

If you don’t have one, what are your thoughts on them and would you ever own one? And why/why not? Like I have stated I prefer more flexible bodies but I have fell in love with a full torso body, so I may consider buying it. I would because it fits the doll and his character but I wouldn't because again the lack of posing ability.

Maybe you don’t own one but at some point you dealt/played with one, what did you think about it? I've only dealt with the single jointed chest and I am not fond of the lack of poses avalible.

I hope this helped even a little!

    20. I will not stand for a non-jointed torso. There are still plenty of good bodies out there with at least one joint in the middle that are wonderfully sculpted and fit certain characters perfectly. I just NEED my posability!
