1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Dictionary of important terms and its origins?

Jan 22, 2014

    1. So, obviously, some of the standard bjd sizes's names originated from Volks (I think). It makes me wonder where other bjd terms come from? It's too bad the bjd wiki is down before i ever thought of checking it out. I know that a lot of these terms are standard now for "veterans" that "newbies" must adopt to. I am also aware that things are simpler like that to minimize confusion. BUT these word are our own. It's our culture. It would be interesting to slow down a little and reflect the sweetness of the word, you know?

      So let's start!

Do you have a bjd term in mind that you want to bring up? Just for fun, give a brief definition of it! Do you know where this term originated from? If not, does anyone else know?

I'm sorry! I hope my thread makes sense!

    2. ***It originates from similar concepts such as bonding with a child, pet , some sexy person you are dating, etc
** I'm not sure the origin. I haven't heard of anyone outside the official company websites use this word often.

Feel free to copy paste and add, and correct me! :) I suppose this can be a humorous thread too

    3. Face up; the painting on the face of the doll
I think this must have come about as another way of saying make-up, say for the male sculpts or just "nude" faces... correct me if I'm wrong.

Also yeah, for the people that didn't know, SD, MSD and YoSD are Volks terms, the SD stands for Superdollfie. I believe it used to be like Minifee and such in that they only used it for their dolls... but now it's everywhere :P

    4. Soomed- being doomed to financial ruin by the doll company Soom, known best for their spectacular limited fantasy dolls.
Iplewhelmed- being overwhelmed and driven to financial ruin by all the lovely dolls Iplehouse produces

These are not really "important" terms (unless you are yourself affected by them!) but they are sort of funny :)

    5. Is it okay if I ask for a term to be defined?

"Kicky" I've seen this a few times and was wondering what it means? :)

    6. Where the doll ALWAYS wants to bend at the hips and/or knee's every time you try to stand it up or attempt to pose it with straight legs.

    7. The term face-up refers to painting the face and it is different from make-up in that you paint every aspect of the face, so also the eyebrows and lower lashes are painted, for example. It means that without painting, the doll is completely blank(without a 'face')and with painting, you give it a face. So, face-up. It's different from make-up because that usually refers to wearing make-up(like humans do), so, lipstick and eyeliner and such, while a doll can have a face-up but not look as if he/she is wearing make-up. The term face-up was probably introduced to avoid confusion, and make it clear that the whรณle face is painted on, not only the parts we usually think of when we hear the word make-up. And maybe to avoid boy doll owners from saying how their boy has such nice make-up on XDD

This is a very interesting thread :D It's true that the doll world seems to have it's own set of words and terms that can be confusing when you're new, so it would be very handy to have a dictionary of some sorts ^_^

    8. Too bad there isn't a bjd wiki for this sort of thing... You know, everything all in one place and in alphabetical order and cross-referenced, and easy to search and all that... Ah, well.

Make up-- I've heard this used interchangeably with Face Up. Usually anything other than the face/make up is "blushing" or "body blushing" or "body painting" -- or something more particular, like "tattoos" or "hand-blushing" or "nipples blushing/painting"

I believe "faceup" was just a bjd-specific term for head/face painting... Since it was around pretty much since the beginning, it might have been Volks-related.

    9. Two things --

      1) It isn't "required" for a "successful" doll ownership experience, and

      2) I think you miiiiiight mean "sentimental". "Sedimentary" is something else. ;)

And re: make-up -- every time I've ever seen the term used, it specifically refers to the faceup. If someone means body blushing, they say "body blushing" or just "blushing".

    10. My dolls and I have quite the igneous relationship!

    11. I actually have a bit of a glossary of BJD hobby terms on my blog for my relatives and friends who like my work but aren't hobby people. I need to update it with more but I do have a pretty busy life right now.

    12. I sometimes see an odd typo on doll site using the term "body brushing". I have no idea where it came from since the r is nowhere near the l key but it appears to just be another way of saying body blushing.

    13. I think "body brushing" is an attempt to equate it to "airbrushing," rather than "blushing," or at least that's the understanding I've had of the term. (It may also be a typo in some cases.)

    14. Translations from Asian languages often replace "L" with "R", for the simple reason that some Asian languages don't have as distinct an "L" sound as English (in Japanese, for example, it is somewhere in between "L" and "R"). I always thought that's where "body brushing" came from.

    15. What an excellent post and smart thinking!

You must have had a rocky start!
I'm having one of those pokemon moments where I can't remember what an oyster is called besides a "cloyster", haha. Alternatively, I can cover my ascii and say Sedimentary Value- the sentimental value equalliing the number of layers applied to the doll's bare resin (Ex: sealant/ sealant/ pastel/ aitbrush/ acrylic paint/ sealant/ gloss/ clothes/ nomura belts/ etc) Haha

And you're absolutely right. People enjoy their hobbies differently so bonding is not required!
      Absolutely! Asking is highly encouraged!

Okay I had to google this a bit and my hypothesis of its origin is totally a non researched guess!
This term is used outside of the bjd social circles as well. This word most likely comes from the emphasis on the adjective "grail" which is derived from the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail is one of those legendary treasures that treasure hunters, historians , adventurers and such sought after in fiction (or maybe real life). There are a lot of "holy grails" among our world culture. It can refer to a chalice that grants powers, the cup Jesus used in the Last Supper themed paintings, the chalice that used to catch jesus's blood, a grail that evolves Sailor Moon's powers to the next level, etc. Whatever it is in any work, there is only one of it and people want it, like Indiana Jones want it.
It is to emphasize the intensity of the person's want for whatever particular doll they are talking about that may be so rare they might as well search for the holy grail. (Except there is probably a few hundred of them and can be purchased in the internet if one is lucky or rich/big super saver)

    16. Okay here's another one I'd like to ask about. ^_^

"Shelled" (and "Re-Shelled" as well!) I think I know based on the way I've seen it used but I want to be sure!

    17. To Shell a character is to get a doll to portray that character, usually in reference to a roleplayer or writer's original character. Re-Shelling is what we call it when you sell off a doll you were using to portray that character and get a different doll to portray the same character.
Gotta add some of these terms to my Glossary.

    18. I'm in the middle of reshelling two of my characters at the moment.

Sometimes doll owners will reshell and keep both the old and new dolls, having them at different stages in their "lives". When I reshell, it's because my tastes have changed. New dolls come out - different times, different choices and ideas. I have some doll friends who cold never reshell, they either buy dolls to keep. period., or they don't do the character thing so buying and selling, is just buying and selling.

Doll Friend: A friend you've made through the hobby. ^___^

    19. Actually, the meaning of "grail doll" has shifted to become "the doll I want the most right at this point in time" in a lot of circles. I still define it the way you have (my ultimate holy grail doll is a tan SD17 Shiro Tachibana fullset, which I will NEVER get because holy shit expensive, but good lord do want), but a lot of people have started using it in a much less...intense fashion, shall we say.

    20. Less intense, yes, that's putting it mildly. I would never have considered the term applied to something, ahh, "less expensive" that was a currently-available standard. If you can buy it any time you want because it's always available, I'm not sure how it's a "holy grail".

In normal usage: I want a particular limited doll who wasn't well-received at the time of his release due to size and styling, so he is rare to start with and almost never comes up for sale secondhand. He will also be expensive (although probably less than I paid for my most expensive bjd to date), so I'm going to be saving up for a bit before I post a WTB for him and also clearing out as much of my wishlist as possible so I'm not tempted to drop cash on other dolls. It will take considerable doing to get him and he will be the pride of my collection when I do get one. That is my grail doll.
