Did a small change ever caused your doll to completely change character?

Jan 25, 2010

    1. I have been in the doll hobbies for way more years than i dear to admit, so i know dolls can have a different look with a change, i mean something deeper here.

Ever since she came, one of my dolls was a angry young woman, a though girl. Anything else but dark black, pins and leather looked completely ridiculous on her.

Recently i got some wigs in a Dollheart Fukubukuro, for which i felt i had no use. They did not swap well, so i decided to see if a pic of the wig on a doll head would help. I put one of the wigs on her head. It was as if the mold changed. She looks so calm, relaxed and gentle with the new wig, as if she has had a completly different life and personality.

So i wonder did YOU experience something unexpected like this?

    2. Yep, this happened with my newest girl. I have twin SD13 Megus. When the second arrived, she looked very.. pained. Almost lifeless, her eyes were blank and she'd just.. stare.

I got her a new wig and she's so alive now. It's a super long one, and everything about her just screams "water goddess". It was a dramatic change for a very simple difference.

    3. when Elfdoll K arrived he had the angriest look on his face. I was worried that perhaps he wouldn't suit the personality I thought he had. All it took was a change of eye colour from dark brown to a light hazel green and he changed instantly and became more likeable.

    4. Isn't it amazing how a change in color can change the personality so much?

    5. That did happen to my first doll. Though, he never had as well a defined character as a lot of my others. After I got him and his SO, I sort of switched gears to becoming very story oriented, and suddenly he didn't seem to fit anywhere. I thought about changing him, but could never bear to do it. Then one day I noticed that one of his eyes had gotten knocked out of whack, and I decided to just go ahead and try a different pair.

Not only did the new pair look very nice, I felt him starting to change. As I changed other things about his look to fit better with a new persona (he was starting to fit in with my fantasy dolls) he continued to change till 'he' became 'she' (there's not a lot of difference between the male and female AR LF sculpts, and he was always a very pretty boy) and a half-elf. His (now her) SO became an elf with the help of the Obitsu optional pixie ears, and all this has given me a chance to rebond to the both of them. It was a strange experience, because my dolls never change who they are, but things really worked out for the best.

    6. Mine wasn't even eyes or a wig or anything that she wears...it was a simple accessory that did it.:sweat Ever since I've had my robot girl, Quadrophenia, I've had in mind that she seeks out the stories of her neighborhood, observing humanity in order to understand it. And I've known she was created sometime in the late 1960s/70s. I've also known that she's the very creative sort, but knew very little else about her. Well, last week I stumbled across a gorgeous antique looking miniature journal on etsy. Pricy, but I just had to have it. And suddenly I could see it in Quadrophenia's hands...and then it all just clicked! I ran to get a miniature acoustic guitar I had stored away and put that in her hands and it was all perfect...Quadrophenia seeks out the stories of her neighborhood because she's an aspiring songwriter! The juxtaposition of an electronic robot coupled with a folk guitar and antique song journal just screamed out her true character to me. I'm so happy to have finally discovered who my girl really is after a whole year of loving her!:aheartbea:):aheartbea

    7. It didn't change his personality, but it DID change his expression. Lilac eyes changed to purple eyes, and now instead of looking callous, he looks kind ... perfect :)

    8. Yes, wigs can definatly do that. But I think my girl, she changed the character I intended for her more that a change or eyes/wig/clothes did. She really helped me define the character and somehow she came up with the whole story, all the blanks I felt before were filled in.

But definatly, change of faceup would change the character of the doll more than anything else for me.

    9. It's strange, for me it's photos vs reality. When I saw both owner and company photos of my girl, I knew she'd be perfect for the kind of snooty, vaguely hysterical teenage girl character I had in mind. And when I got her, her expression is so mellow and calm! You can see the sneer very occasionally. So now her character has a much better sense of humour. It's changed her, but for the better, I think.

    10. I recently changed my first doll [Asagi] from a "think hes better then humans, rather dress in womens kimono then mens, cheats on his boyfriend - vampire" to a "thinks hes better then humans, VERY loyal to his boyfriend - aristocrat vampire" :'D

The aristocrat look is what I originally wanted for him but somehow in the mist of things, I made him into a total asshole DX. But yah hes a great guy now <3. Othr the fact that hes stil royalty and still doesnt like humans.

    11. This happened to me very recently.

My boy was always meant to have blue eyes - but I never thought the actual shade of blue mattered. The default pairs he arrived with were a gorgeous color: turquoise blue. They were so vibrant and lovely I didn't give them a second thought.

Just for kicks I swapped them for darker eyes, a pair of blue-gray. I didn't like these eyes individually and I assumed I wouldn't like them in my boy's head.

But the minute I saw him wearing them... something clicked. The blue-gray eyes brought out his smoky face-up and it was like magic. He suddenly looked so much more "like he should." He still had his cheerful look, but they added a bit of mystery. The event made me realize the darker the blue, the better (in his case, at least).

Sometimes I'll also try random wigs on my dolls and many times I can tell they are not happy. :XD: When that happens I quickly switch them back to their defaults.

    12. Yep, happened to me with my first girl, Gwena. She had always had long blond hair with full bangs, and a sweet, girlish look. Then one day on a whim I put her in another wig I had of a different color with no bangs, and not only did she look good in it but it really changed her style and character!

She wound up keeping the new wig, and she seems to have grown up a few years because of it. Though she's still the same character, she's no longer (looking like) a cutesy 13-year old that dresses in frilly lolita things. She has more sass now and acts more mature.

    13. Yes ALL the time

one wig change and my Chinese general became an English noble LOL LOL

    14. I was given an Obitsu Gretel (my girlfriend couldn't bear to sell her) and when I gave her new eyes, wig, and face-up, she turned into a completely different character. There are still some characteristic "both" share, such as a sweet, if come-hither expression and an ability to take lingerie/nude photos.

    15. I had my Bobobie Ariel for about four months, and even though I loved her sculpt, we weren't bonding. I tried a few wigs without success. Then I made her a white dreadlock wig, just to try out a tutorial, and the difference was amazing. It was like she snapped into focus. I ended up deciding to keep her instead of selling her. Now she has a purple dreadlock wig too, and is going to be in dreadlocks forever.

    16. I had a Pukipuki Sugar. She was really cute and everything, but I like to make clothes for my girls and I simply could not make things that small. I was getting ready to sell her and so I was taking pictures of all of her things. She came with a full pukisha set of face plates and hands/feet. I popped those parts on to the body and the character formed in literally two seconds. So she changed into a male cat named Max. I sold the Sugar plates and the human parts and now he is all cat. The character that she was... I'm gonna try her as a Littlefee size and see if that fits her a bit better.

    17. I had tomboy bjd. She could look 21 or 12 with just the change of her wig. So much fun!

    18. My MNF Martin was supposed to be a very upright and reserved character, and very religous as well. He had been a Templar, and have gray eyes. However, I cannot find the exact shade of gray that would have been "his" shade. So I ended up getting a pair of green eyes as a temporary measure. He had arrived with an odd shade of blue that looked flat to me, so I had to get something for him.

And what do you know? Those green eyes just made him come alive, and while he still has a history as a Templar, he's now much more worldly, and laid back. He's also not so religous (a vow of chasitity? Not for him! ;) ) now.

    19. With my initial wig, a Dollmore long wavy silver wig, Cecilia looked kind of sad...but then I found Monique wigs! It gave her the personality I intended. The wig moves with her - when I lay her down, the wig spreads out beautifully like real hair...

...she now is the the quiet but temperamental dear that I intended her to be!

    20. I find it happens all the time. I have a Rosette girl, and I have tried her in a lot of different wigs and her personality changes with each wig change. her default is a long black wig with blunt cut fringe/bangs from cancan, but I also have an alternate for her, a black updo from Monique. In the long one she looks arrogant and irritable, which suits her personality, a snarky little spoiled brat, but if I put the updo on she looks transformed to being a highly strung yet serene (go figure but it is true) young woman, totally self possessed but also full of nervous energy, tightly controlled. This really works for her character, since her two great loves (excepting an adolescent crush on a certain elf) are playing the flute and ballet, and the updo was intended for her to wear when she dances.
