1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do any other BJD addicts out there have children too?

May 18, 2014

    1. This may be a silly question... but I'm really curious. Are there any others out there who have children and still find time for the BJD hobby? I have two small girls ages 4 and 6 who absolutely love my new hobby (of course) ;) It's not as hard to keep them from handling the dolls as I thought it might be and they are fascinated by them, yet respectful of "mommy's dolls" lol
It's hard to find time to sit and work on my dolls while they're awake during the day, though. And as understanding as my husband is about my new obsession, he still requires some attention too ;) All the youtube videos and blogs I see with bjd enthusiasts never mention having kids. I guess I'm wondering if there are any other parents out there or if I am in the minority and am I weird for enjoying the hobby even after having children of my own? And if you do have children, how do you find the time to do bjd? Inquiring minds want to know!

    2. Hi, I have two kids too, a boy of 5 and a girl of 8. My son doesn't bother with my dolls at all but my girl who didn't take much notice before recently is asking more about them. She even asked if she could play with them a few weeks ago. Of course I declined as I've seen her playing with her own dolls!
I do find it hard to find time to do things with the dolls so I don't take many photos but I sew for them in the evening and at weekends or on my day off when they're at school. I do manage to go on some doll meets as long as my husbands not working so he can have the kids. But I must admit there never seems to be enough time in the day to do all that I want to!
Of the meets I've been to I think I'm usually the oldest there (38) and I would say parents are in the minority.

    3. I don't have nor do I want to have children, but I know there are plenty of parents and grandparents in the hobby. Sometimes mother and daughter are in the hobby together (which is incredibly cute!). When I picked up my first doll from Think Pink (run by a mother and daughter collecting dolls) there was a mother in there who also picked up her first bjd and I heard about a granddaughter buying her granny a bjd, because they loved them so much, but she knew granny would never buy something like that for herself. Adorable!

    4. I have a fifteen year old son who mostly rolls his eyes at my dolls. But he does get interested in the engineering of them, so he'll come and sit with me if I've got a head off or something like that. He also likes to carefully lay all my dolls down on their shelf while I'm sleeping, or turn them to all face the wall. :?

    5. Thank you so much for answering my questions, everyone! It's good to know that I am not alone and that there are other parents in the hobby out there. I like the idea of one day collecting with my daughters and seeing what designs they come up with for their characters. They already like "shopping" with me as I browse bjds on the computer and have pointed out the ones that they like. Already seeing their differences in taste is interesting.
So it is as I feared... I am in the minority! Haha Oh well ;)

    6. I have a 16 year old daughter who gets mad at me when she sees how much I spend on dolls. She loves anime. I'd love to have someone make a BJD of one of her favourite anime characters.

    7. Hi,I do not have any own children but I like the more teenager bjd's. No idea why. I love also the very realistic looking babies because I can't have my own baby(yet). But I think I will never stop with the hobby. Ilove bjd's for 8 years now

    8. I have two boys under the age of 9. Neither of them really pay much attention to my dolls - other than when I'm buying props for them that are actually toys that they could play with! I don't have time to photograph my dolls much though. Partly because I just don't have the backdrop to photograph them at home but also, it's easier to take photos when the boys are in bed but the light is not good enough then.

    9. You're definitely not alone. I was surprised too at first, but I constantly hear people in the hobby mention their kids and such!

I'm not married or have any kids yet, but I can see how other mothers and parents can find it hard to juggle between family and this tiring hobby lol. It's difficult, but it's not weird, so don't feel left out! Who knows, maybe you'll meet a good dolly friend who's also a mother and relates to your struggles ;)

Family comes first, but that doesn't mean you don't have a life, so enjoy your hobby. You'll find a way to work around your schedule! Perhaps when your kids are at school? Napping? And there's a reason why a couple is made out of two people, so let your husband babysit once in a while if you decide to work on sewing or a face-up :P

    10. I have a 6 year old as well :) she adores mommy's dolls. I usually do stuff on the weekends I don't have her or while she's in school. She's careful enough with my dolls that she's often allowed to hold them while doing her homework ^^ and has on occasion slept with several of them (usually when she comes home from her dads, she doesn't do well over there, probably kept awake by her baby sister =P) so she gets to sleep with one of mommy's dolls when she gets back for a few nights. Her favorites are my smallest and my biggest dolls. She prefers the big guy at night cause he's all in armor and she feels safe ^^

    11. I have 15 & 14 year old sons. They help pick outfits and give ideas on photo shoots. My older uses one of my dolls as inspiration for his artwork.

    12. I know what you mean! I keep encouraging a writer friend of mine whoes illustration style is Anime/manga-like that she should get into the hobby and create her characters! I know that if I were a writer that's what I would do
