Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. I always wonder when looking at photos of all the lovely girls and boys whether when dressing/costuming them you buy what you yourselves like, or what you think your doll would like, be it due to the specific character they invoke or the style you think they would look good in. Probably not wording this properly.

I may see a beautiful dress that I would love to see on one of my bigger girls, but although I love it, I can't see them wearing it. If you dress your dolls in more modern clothes normally, but really love a frilly lolita style dress for sale, would you get it for that doll? I don't think I would, because I KNOW my girl would not appreciate it.

Don't know if it is about not being their style, or not mine. Any thoughts?

    2. I dress them to suit their characters. It would drive me crazy to have them not look the way they should.

    3. I suppose I dress my dolls to suit them. But then, if I dressed them in styles that didn't suit their personality and overall "look", it would bug me. So both, I guess? XD

    4. I dress my doll to suit.. myself, I guess? Not saying I wear what my doll wears, but I dress it in whatever I'd like to see him in. I consider the dolls style more modern and I like to see him in suits, but id totally put him in punk stuff too if I liked it enough.

    5. At first, it seemed like for myself, since my first boy is very into loud, colorful, eccentic get-ups like I am. XD' But that was in-character for him.

Trinkette was second. She STILL needs her proper outfit. She's frilly, but she's also TINY. XD' 14 centimeters.

Then came Sylar. He's...well, he dresses like a classy-ish normal guy. I find a bunch of shirts that I personally like, but that just aren't him. As a result he has a teeny tiny wardrobe. XD'

Tidbit...she's a little goblin. She came as a fullset, but I've since put away her little fuku in favor of an over-sized outfit I got from Spampy, and traded her wig with Trink. XD' As a result, she looks more 'her.'

Alessa dresses like a little girl. XD In dresses I wouldn't wear, for the most part. She still needs her Midwich uniform, but still, her taste is her own.

Gypsy is a SH Nurse, so she's got an outfit she wants and she's sticking to it. XD'

Claudia doesn't have a body, but when she does, she'll have the same uniform as Alessa. XD'

Jonathan is also not here yet, but will have neat blazers and button-down shirts.

GlaDOS has no clothes yet. XD' I plan to make her a 1950s-style dress for serving cake in, and a replica of my cosplay apron, though. XDDD

TickTick is...well, a little hellion. I have her in a very temp sock-dress with a ribbon, but she WANTS HER LEATHER OUTFIT.

Interestingly, I'd love to buy and wear lolita, but I don't have a doll yet who would! XDDDD''''

    6. I think all my dolls reflect some aspect of myself, although it was not exactly intentional, so I buy clothes that I like and that seem to go with the personalities I've imagined for them.

    7. Mine generally wear clothes to suit them more than to suit me... case in point would be all the little dresses and skirts Esa wears, when I won't be caught dead in one. :D

    8. I dress them to suit their characters, but of course their characters wear styles that I like anyway so I like all the stuff I buy for them. XD

    9. Technically however I dress them is to suit me, since I'm the one that decided their character, style, look, etc.

    10. Both?

I would not make one of my dolls/OCs wear something I do not like.
In the end I will always like what they wear.

And I would chose things they would wear too XP

So I may make them wear stuff they would not wear, but never things that I would not like on them :<

I'm the brain here, I should make the final decision XD

    11. My dolls characters are in my head only at the moment so kind of both. Their character fits what I like, and the clothes fit the character.

    12. hmmmmm, i never thought about this. i suppose i do both...i buy things that appeal to me, and get to live out a fantasy through them, as i am neither as young or beautiful as i think they are. however, i like to try different looks. i might dress them vintage/romantic for a while, and then all of a sudden i have the urge to go crazy modern on them. eventually i think i will settle for a look that is consistently pleasing to me.

    13. I sort of do both. Of course I have to like anything I buy for them or I wouldn't get it in the first place but once it's here I have to decide who gets to wear it. While a few of my dolls have evolved a distinctive style to suit their characters, most of them are chameleons, wearing medieval garb one time then street styles the next.

Sometimes I'm surprised by what they seem to want to wear, like my elf girls. They'll put on their flowing gowns but really seem to prefer miniskirts & high boots. The boys seem stuck in black or white sort of EGA or leather but then there's Tristan who looks a bit awkward in anything but jeans.

None of them really wear what I wear as I'm old & fat & basically live in sweats, jeans & t-shirts. I live out all my clothing fantasies thru them. They can put on anything & look fantastic in it.

    14. Both actually. I feel like all my dolls have characteristics of my own personality. Since I bought them because I like them and knew their character when I got them, their clothing is an extension of their personality and tastes which are an extension of mine.

    15. I definitely dress them to suit them. There are times I sit there, see a beautiful outfit, and think that I'd love to get it, but have to admit that I can't, because it would not fit a single one of my doll's style.

Then again, I create my dolls to have characters that fir the kind of things I want to have them wear, if that makes any sense...

    16. They dress to suit their own tastes, not mine. Though sometimes I learn that I actually do like something that I never thought I did before, as both Elijah and Isia have taught me that camo and MC Hammer pants are actually really cool xD

But all in all, if I see something I really adore, if I know one of the boys won't really take to it, then I'll just pass it up. Though I've learned this isn't always a good thing >.< When I was down in the LA Volks store they had just gotten in these adorable shoes that I couldn't stop oogling over, and even though my dad offered to get them for me, at that time I knew it wasn't my boys' style so I told him know. My dad didn't really seem to get the whole 'No, they wouldn't wear it' idea, but now I sort of regret since, as Nazomi's character has grown, I realize those shoes would be perfect for him. Oh well.

    17. There are things that would look so great on Uriel, but I don't feel it would fit his character. :(

    18. I don't tend to make a distinction most of the time, because it pleases me a lot to have these guys in things that suit them, and look good on them. So... it's not really an either/or in the majority of cases. What would please them, if they could really have preferences, is also what pleases me.

That said, I do occasionally torture my poor Alabaster Prince with things that would be completely out-of-character for any self-respecting Abyssal. The original, tabletop RPG version of Al wasn't at all a "frills and frufru" kind of guy, yet I've still been known to stuff the resin version into some seriously, utterly, ridiculously frilly things (Think DollHeart's "Erasmus" and "White Earl" outfits-), just because I thought he looked adorable... if absolutely miserable... in them.

You always hurt the one you love.

    19. I try to fit them to my boy, though it is difficult. >< If I really think something is ugly, I wont let my boy wear it XDD

Though, its up to him I guess. I can live with some ugly sweater if I need too.

    20. To suit me and to my entertainment, of course *evil laughter*.

My doll collection actually expand for my sake of wishing to dress them in all kinds of different styles. If certain boys don't like wearing jeans, then I find some other boys who would look good in jeans...so on and so forth.
