Do you ever NOT want to paint a doll?

Sep 5, 2014

    1. OK, I admit it, I am an overgrown child. I only have one BJD at the moment and I love to handle her, pose her, have her sit with when I am working. She has just been sent for painting and I do worry that too much handling will ruin the artists work. I am saving up for a Doll Chateau Christina and I saw some images of a blank doll, helmet and all, on pin interest. I thought the doll looked amazing, like an idol carved in ivory. Do any of you find that not painting or at least, only the lightest touch, does more justice to a sculpt?

    2. I know some people who are perfectly okay with just leaving a sculpt blank but, personally I'm not one of them. It actually bothers me when the sculpt isn't painted. Not sure why, it just ... doesn't look right in my brain, even when the sculpt itself is lovely with or without a face-up. Maybe it's because of their realism(or at least semi-realism)? Real human faces aren't even that void of pigment so seeing it on a very human looking doll just looks off to me.

    3. I prefer facedup dolls :) more lively!

    4. I'm one of those that prefer having a face-up on my dolls, but I've had my Soom Koori sitting on the shelf for awhile now with her human head while I was working on her elf head and I actually don't want to face-up her human head since I got so use to seeing it blank. But I have Dollzone doll also sitting nearby and it's driving crazy seeing it blank. So for me it's a case by case basis.

    5. I prefer to have a doll with faceup. It gives the doll a character. I don't mind if the body is not painted/ blushed but it will be so cool if the body is also painted because it gives the doll more definition :)

    6. Oh no, I definitely prefer face-ups. Usually I don't care for bodyblushing much, but my Dollstown 13-year old body is an exception. The body is so defined and has so many little spots that scream to be blushed. Hands, feet, the little crevices in her neck, the muscles in her back, her breasts. I'll be blushing her soon ^_^

    7. Here is the picture that I saw that had me doubting whether or not I should get the full works done to my doll when I finally order her. I love the way the helmet looks part of her, like that tatooing on the neck. So I was thinking of a barely there faceup in russet tones and very pale blushing on the body. I want to bring her to life but at the same time, I love the way she looks like a pagan idol. The way DC paint her is lovely but I saw a faceup some one had done themselves that was very subtle and kept that cold, elvin quality. God, I so want this doll! Sorry if I am boring every one but I am getting obsessed with her! :D

    8. For me I honestly feel like the doll has to have some kind of face up, light or not just because I want them to look more life like. I can't really imagine a female Bjd without eye lashes or some color on her lips, cheeks, or eyes. But that's just me. I want my doll's to come to life and a bit of "makeup" helps the process. <3

    9. I love blank dolls.
It's happened several times now that I have waited a while to pain a new doll, because I would be so in awe of their sculpts that I felt I simply wasn't good enough to do them justice.
My graduation project from art school was actually photos of blank dolls.
One of my favorite dolls I've seen is a Zaoll Muse, who was blank for a really long time and in the end the owner opted for a very minimal faceup, keeping that charm the blank sculpt has.
In the end I do paint all my dolls, but I never feel bad about leaving them blank for a while. It's a different side to them.

    10. I started out NEVER wanting a blank doll - and it irked me to see photos of blank dolls too - But strangely, due to unforseen circumstances like chance finds in stock with dealers, I now have a few blank dolls - and 2 of those are white and blank - white resin being the other thing I was NEVER going to have! I was just looking at one of my blank girls this evening, sighing and thinking I must get her a faceup - as usual - but really I love her blank now I'm so used to her being blank - I just can't imagine her with a faceup. If and when I get some paints, I will be doing VERY minimalist faceup on all my blank dolls - tiny hint of colour on lips and eyelids is all. I didn't really appreciate a doll's sculpt before, but when they're blank you really see the detail so much better, if it's a good sculpt, it's good blank too :aheartbea

    11. When I see a very interesting or unusual sculpt, I like to see it unpainted so that it's more of an 'art' piece then a doll.
My dolls are all painted, because I see them as 'Charaters' rather then 'art' pieces. I haven't yet seen an "art" doll that I've fallen in love with.

    12. I have seen dolls that I thought looked perfect without any paint on them.

I don't own any of them, however. I mostly prefer faceups! But there are definitely dolls that, if I owned them, I would not want to paint.

    13. While I also prefer face upped dolls, there are definitely some out there that look amazing completely blank and I like seeing them. Some of my own have to wait for a long time to get proper face ups too and I'm with Snow on this one, I don't really feel bad about it.
Gives me time to really appreciate the sculpt and come up with ideas for how I wanna use those features.

    14. My DZ Freddy looks perfect with or without faceup. His chiseled cheekbones and sharp features create enough shadow play to make his face super interesting even completely blank...

    15. I'm glad I am not the only one! I thought I was just being a bit of a coward (or totally cheap considering it will cost more to get a fully made up Christina from DC) but I feel in love with the pics like the one I posted above. The doll's owner posted a whole photo shoot and I just thought she looked amazing. I would love to learn how to customise my own dolls with face up and tattoos but this one I think I am going to leave blank, if not for ever, defo for a long time. Christmas is coming and I have started to drop hints about my prezzie!

    16. I definitely prefer face-ups over a blank face. But I can see where you're coming from.
I recently got a Celine MNF and holy moly does she look adorable even without a face-up.
I sent her out for a face-up and I'm not sure if I'll like the end product 'cause she looks so cute without one.
I'm crossing my fingers I'll still adore her. XD

    17. I'll have to have a look at her! I'm sorry I joined this forum because there are now so many dolls I love and would like to own. I hadn't heard of Dollshe before and now - WOW! I WANT!

    18. I don't like having blank dolls because the lack of eyebrows, mostly, really bothers me. but one time I did regret painting a doll because I felt it changed the sculpt too much and I didn't like it as much (it was a mature Narae60 head). but mooooooooost of the time I feel the other way around completely (when in the hand of someone who knows what they're doing and frame the face properly).

    19. For me, without face up I don't feel like they are my doll. I prefer dolls with face up, so I always choose to order face up service from companies, if it's beautiful and available or send it to an artist as soon as it arrives.

    20. Most of my dolls are painted, but I have one that I will likely never paint. He's a pet doll and looks gorgeous without it. It would depend in the doll for me.
