1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Do you Google companies you haven't heard of and then regret it...

Sep 26, 2013

    1. ...when you fall in love with a dozen more dolls?

As a relative newcomer to the hobby I find myself Googling companies I've not heard of to see what their dolls look like. For example today I looked up Angell Studio and found myself sighing over dolls and mentally adding them to my list of dolls I want.

I can't be the only person to do this, clearly we need a support group, the new (to us) company overload support group.

So I ask you this as well.

Have you Googled a company and immediately reached for your wallet?

Have you ever had the opposite, heard amazing things about a company and then had the dolls not live up to your expectations?

Personally I looked at the dolls and wished I could win the lottery.

    2. Since I'm familiar with almost all moderately sized companies, I always research a new one when they pop up. I sometimes like their dolls, but my tastes are so specific that only a few companies appeal to me.

    3. I think I've done both. When I was new to the hobby, I was scared of companies that didn't have US dealers (and back then, it REALLY limited me!) so I only bought what I could get from JunkySpot and didn't even join DoA for almost two years. When I did...OMG! I've realized I actually don't really care for most of the companies JS carries, after seeing the world of other options, and I went from "I only need 6" to nearly 30.....

But I've also fallen in love with company pictures, then looked at owner pictures and realized I really don't like a lot of sculpts as much as I thought. There was one that I just LOVED from company pictures, and was already saving up for, almost had enough, then stumbled across owner pictures and quickly decided that I absolutely hated how she looked from certain angles.

Lately, I've found a GORGEOUS girl on Tumblr that I'd love to own, but there were no tags, and I have no idea what she is or even what size she is. I'm not very good with Tumblr yet, so I don't even know how to begin searching for her. That might be good for me. haha

    4. I'm more likely to fall for a new doll on flickr, having googled it - Usually the company pics aren't as attractive, and I don't see the potential of a sculpt until I see all the owner pics on flickr! When I was new to the hobby I impulsively ordered 2 dolls and THEN did my research, realised I didn't want those ones at all!

    5. I have, but I like to see owner pictures of dolls so I know what they really look like, which is why I'm here. There are some that looked so perfect in the pictures and then I see them with no wig from another angle and something is unpleasant to me about it. All the doll companies are new to me, though. I am going down the DoA company list and peeking at their dolls. ^.^

    6. Yes, absolutely, for sure! I use google (especially the images tab) all the time to check out dolls I have never heard of and it definitely inspires me to buy. I agree with everyone else though that owner pics are what really get me. It is an excellent way to see what a doll really looks like in person.

    7. I keep using google to find companies I never heard of before. Sometimes this means that I have to add a new doll on my wishlist, but most of the times I'm safe. Being someone who prefers old skool sculpts over the majority of the newer sculpt that are being released has its benefits :).

    8. I don't see anything wrong with checking out new companies. Being a newbie, I like to try and see as much as I can. And just because you have 30 dolls in your wishlist, doesn't mean you're going to buy all of them. :)

If you can figure out who first posted the photo (not sure reblogged it) by clicking on the "notes" at the bottom of the post, then you should be able to send that user a message and ask them. Or who knows, tags don't go with posts when they're reblogged so if it was reblogged, the original poster might have had tags listed for what sculpt the doll is.

    9. I tend to look up new companies as I hear about them. I've already decided that (unless some unforseen circumstance comes up, and some one like...Volks comes out with a not limited doll who I fall madly in love with) I'm only going to seriously consider dolls from companies who have a common dealer (like Mintoncard. That's the site I first found bjds on, and I'm mostly sticking with the companies they deal with). It's ridiculous, I know, but oddly enough, so far, those companies are the only ones who have dolls I actually want (accepting a couple of nonobtainable grails). >.>

    10. I did not regret looking at BJD companies and their dolls. I know I am probably going to make my wishlist longer by doing so but it also means that this hobby have so much more to offer. It also makes me motivated to save up money. Besides, by researching about a company, I get to find out which dolls I really want to have. I would feel disappointed if I purchased a doll only to find something I like better afterwards. :)

    11. I actually did this just yesterday. I saw this doll an Angelheim Raul and I love how he looks, only to find out the company went under and no where sells him now. I am going to keep an eye out for him on the mp though.

    12. Have you Googled a company and immediately reached for your wallet?
I SO need a BJD-anonymous group to join!!!

I am almost sickly obsessed with keeping up with all the doll news about new companies, dolls, items. I check them all out all the time.

I don't always reach right for the wallet... but it's bad enough that I now have enough stuff to stock a doll shop! I use the excuse that I've been buying dolls and stuff since 2004, and I have extra income and not a lot of expenses, so I can afford a certain amount of buying... but it's still pretty crazy! I don't want so much stuff lying about. Really, it gets to be a little overwhelming... I mean, I'm super-lucky, but there are downsides to everything if you let it get out of hand. *_*

I do try to avoid any impulse-buying (not easy!). I try to make sure I think about it a few days or more so I make sure I really want something that much-- pretty much I'll need to stop myself from buying unless it's something that I really can't live without (you know--that one thing that will haunt you until you get it... that not having it would be much more detrimental than spending that money/time/space/aggravation... I don't want to buy something that will just sit around, so I try to make sure I love it so much that I'll make the effort to actually enjoy it!!!

Have you ever had the opposite, heard amazing things about a company and then had the dolls not live up to your expectations?
Well, one of my problems is that I find almost all dolls, companies, clothes, items REALLY NICE. I really am not disappointed in most things! I don't have big expectations. In fact, I HOPE that the stuff I google is going to disappoint me enough that I'm not going to be pining away unless I spend more money!

Being into dolls for so long, I'm in a bit of a different position than most, I guess. I really find there is just TOO MUCH good stuff out there and don't need more... but I can't help looking!!! :doh

So... disappointing is usually a GOOD thing for me! But I'm rarely disappointed! :sweat

    13. Yes, of course! I find so many dolls I love, like the Peaks Woods Absolute Beauty Kisha. I loved her to pieces but of course, my wallet was not ready for that!
I actually found the FairyLand Chloe sculpt for the first time on deviantART and thought she was absolutely gorgeous. Then when I googled doll companies I found her again. Turns out I actually love the Celine MiniFee sculpt better. So now I am pretty obsessed with her and really want to buy her! *_*
*Sigh* I remember a time when I said "One is enough for me, Shiloh's the only BJD I need!" :?

    14. I google searched the company OziN5 and I love their sculpts. :D They aren't very well known yet so I made a wiki entry for them. So yeah.

    15. I honestly can't remember this happening just because I have a horrible memory and I've been in the hobby long enough to be familiar with most of the companies out there... Although recently I looked up AprilStory because I knew they hadn't been around very long and I fell in love with a few of their dolls for a few days. But then I was trying to shorten my wishlist like I do every once in a while and I found I could live without them after all... But I never regret that kind of thing! It's fun to look at all the new dolls~

    16. Even if I don't always fall in love, I do enjoy scoping out companies I've never heard of before.

    17. I can't remember ever NOT googling my brains out researching different companies, dolls ect...Even today I had several searches related to dolls cause my tastes are specific and if I can't find enough info...I second guess myself...A lot. So this time...NEIN. >8C Brain will gain lots new info on dolliehs. Though all jokes aside...XD;; I search up companies, different dolls, ect, ect ect just to settle my curiousity but due to my tastes..I either love it, like it, or hate it.

I still wish I didn't find Doll Chateau because I love their Ada and Bella sculpts to DEATH....But I can't afford. :...( ...So...Onto my favorite company Resinsoul and fill the void with a fantasy doll made tailored to my tastes...(Bei, tan skin, double jointed yo-SD body...Possibly pixiu claw hands..) Then leads to MORE googling...Cause I still can't figure out DOA's search engine too good.

    18. I always google a doll company when finding out about it. I'm curious to see their aesthetics and how they style their dolls. And yes theres quite a few that have made me fall head over heals

    19. ** Eyes her Dream High chibi!Feilene and newly-arrived Piko **

Oh, yeah. Finding Dream High's site was very much one of those "What have I done. O_O"-moments.
Luckily Donny's little beasties are pretty much all small-run Limiteds, so there was only so much trouble I could get into.

    20. Honestly, I like having more options. And sometimes by stumbling upon new companies, I find BJD's that are more suited to the character they're modeled after. Yes, I do find that a lot of them have dolls that I really want even though they I don't need them, but because BJD's are so expensive, It's easier to not by them impulsively.
