Do you have a doll that embodies two separate characters?

Mar 5, 2015

    1. I was wondering if anyone has ever had a doll that serves as two distinctly different characters, each with their own personality/style because I have a doll that I am thinking of doing something like that with.

In my case I have not quite figured out my SD girl's current persona "Lillyth", so I was thinking of making her portray my muse "Celeste" for a while. I don't want to part with this doll as she is so lovely, and I don't really want to get another doll right now. The characters are from two completely different universes, so them interacting would not really be an issue.

    2. I have one, a MNF Karsh that I bought to be my WoW Blood Elf, Talkryn. He was that for several years, while I waffled on wanting a doll for Miirik, my dragon. I had all the parts and clothes, but not really the will to buy another doll (nor did I have any sculpt in mind).

One day I slapped a different wig and pair of eyes on Talkryn (who I'd been waffling on selling, as I didn't play WoW much anymore and wasn't as invested in his character), and...boom, Miirik.

I kept Talkryn's gear though, and I'll swap them out whenever I'm feeling a bit nostalgic.

I tried to find a picture of Talkryn, but it looks like it didn't survive the great hard drive crash. My avatar is the Miirik side of the coin, though.

    3. The short answer... sort of?

The longer answer... I have a pair of boys who've been shelled in three different sizes. I hadn't planned on doing them in the SD scale, but I fell so hard for one's sculpt in the smaller sizes that I wanted the large version of him, too. That's both the good and bad thing about CP/FairyLand, honestly. Since at the moment, their F60 line is unavailable, and the sculpt I particularly wanted has never been added to that line anyway, I decided I'd go check out the marketplace here, and see if maybe a less expensive Delf version would pop up.

I wanted either the original version, or something cheap that would let me test the waters on SDs again after I'd sold my only other doll in that scale. I ended up with a doll that languished in the marketplace for a while, that had been modded, and that wasn't my first choice, but as the price went down further and further I finally went for him. And boy, was he in rough shape--I spent hours upon hours cleaning him up, restringing, sueding, having his head repaired, and so forth... and after all that, he couldn't just be a test doll.

So, back to your original question, the two boys I mentioned above are both fandom characters, altered through the lens of journal roleplay. During the game they were in, we had a lengthy event where each character could encounter their "past selves"--not exactly a reincarnation as much as a trapped soul resonant with that current person, but the mechanics are close enough. So I decided that, eventually, I'd wait for that F60 version I really wanted of this boy, and re-do him as the "resonant" version when that happened. Of course that meant I needed an old Delf of the other boy (who does exist as one of the F60 sculpts).

For the time being, they've ended up being mainly their "modern" versions, but occasionally they're the "resonant" versions as well. :)

    4. My first BJD, Volks Link, is named Hiro. He's a normal, ordinary 17 year old boy. After I first got him, I used to joke that he was my therapist, because my friends and coworkers noticed that I was much more cheerful and easygoing since he arrived. So I created another character, a twenty-something no-nonsense therapist named Trevor, and Hiro happily played Trevor for me. I got another Link head after his sculpt was discontinued by Volks, and now he plays Trevor for me, so I have two separate dolls instead of two in one.

I have another character named Demetrius embodied in an ElfDoll Red. He's a shy, quiet, reclusive boy who was debilitated after his father died. He developed a protective alternate personality named Glorfindel, who is an arrogant, self-assured and confident elf. ElfDoll Red plays both characters surprisingly well! I don't think any other BJD would work for this character for me, and I did look for one for a while, because I REALLY disliked how the ElfDoll male body posed! But his face is perfect, so I just deal with his poor posing body.

    5. Sort of - my PKF Mio, Paisley, cosplays (more or less) as an OC from my Dr. Who fanfic days (the character I took my username from, the Lady Madrigal Baker.) She looks a lot like I imagined Maddy looking, but I didn't want to reshell her or get another doll just to be Maddy, so - she plays both.

    6. I used to. My first Soom Dia boy was supposed to be a shell for my longtime favorite OC Maverick when he arrived and was for about three days. Then I made the mistake of slapping a different wig on him and boom, Bethesda was born.
The characters have a connection in their stories, but are still quite different and so I just kept switching wigs and clothes on the doll depending on who I felt like having in the crew the most. That worked quite well for a while, but in the end I opted for buying another Dia just for Maverick, as I kept adding other characters from their respective universes to the crew. It's not like I could ever tire of this sculpt anyways, haha. I'd have an army of Dias and Sards if I could.

    7. Some of mine do and it was intentional because I didn't want a large collection. I have a story that spans a few hundred years and some of my dolls represent characters from a specific period in time. When I want to see them in one of their other personae, I change the outfit.

    8. Oh no, you guys are giving me Ideas lol It honestly never occurred to me to have a doll portray separate characters, but that's really clever. Saves money to be sure! xD It would certainly be fun for cosplay purposes...

    9. One I did this with he had one body two heads Vince and kenshin when I needed kenshin I switched heads and outfits and vice versa when I needed Vince. It doesn't really work with my others.

    10. Sort of. One of my dolls definitely has a gender identity issue. He's currently both Sean and Siobhan. He can't seem to decide which body he wants to remain on. If I put him on a guy body he seems uncomfortable but he doesn't quite fit on a female doll body either though he makes for a pretty girl. I've decided he has a dissociative identity disorder, that he's actually two people sharing one body.

    11. I have two

They're twins and their characters differ depending which ears they are wearing - Victorian 9-year-olds when they have their human ears on, children of the Elf-Forest when they have their regular elf-ears on, and mischievous spiky-haired fae creatures when they have their huge pointy ears on.

Elfie (the girl twin) will only answer to "Mosscrop" when she's got her huge ears on (if she has a different name in the Elf Forest, she's never told me).. although answering to the name of Mosscrop is possibly a bit missleading since I can't see using her name having any more effect than telling her not to do whatever mischief she is getting up to. Her brother , Bracken, seems happy to answer to the same name in all three guises.

Most of my SD sized family also time travel. Most of the time they are Victorian children who wouldn't be out of place in an E.Nesbit story, but occasionally they become their modern-world equivalents (They all retain the same names and characters etc, they are just modern world couterparts of their Victorian selves), so none of them think it's unusual that the twins disappear off to the Elf Forest and become someone else every so often. It's just How Things Are to them.

    12. My dolls have one name, but they can play different roles, like actors. I have some whose main story is set in the early 19thC, but they can also play pirates, if I dress them up... or be dressed in contemporary clothes.

    13. I've never done this or come across this before. As Spock would say, "Fascinating."

    14. Your world sounds like a marvelous one to live in, Teddy. So spontaneous!

For the longest time I wanted an Elf Sabik. But being such an elusive and expensive doll, I never anticipated actually getting to own one, much less the elf version. So when one basically fell into my lap through a trade with a very kind DoA member, I was entirely unprepared and had no idea what to do with him, outside of making a little tribute to a well-known performer and Goblin monarch to whom his sculpt bears more than just a passing resemblance.

But while copyrighted character dolls have been and continue to be a thing in my abode, I often find that I run into walls when trying to blend them in with my original characters, because I have a complex, multi-generational story which takes place on several worlds and beyond. It just doesn't work to have a recognizable face pop in, aside from pure aesthetic or the occasional silly photostory. And Sabik was so expensive and special that I couldn't bring myself to botch things by placing him in the trap of only being Jarreth.

Thus I was introduced to Aurendel, a being who regenerates himself at the end of each lifetime, currently believed to be a lost prince of elves. A little like the Time Lords of Doctor Who, but not really thought up with that in mind. He is most definitely not of their race, and his people do not retain memories of their prior lives unless they recover them much later. Aurendel was Jarreth up until he accidentally triggered his regeneration early, and was transported to a different world. The magi, priests, and druids there have been able to help recover a number of fragments of lost lifetimes, cataloged in the back of his mind, and he has since recrossed the threshold back to the Underground numerous times to ensure that all is well. But he does not live there, and is currently trying to 'figure himself out' in his new life.

He spends much more time, storywise and dollwise, as Aurendel, but every now and again I dress him up or draw him as Jarreth. The characters are almost total opposites in terms of outer behavior and body language, but do blend a little in the middle, particularly when it comes to patience and temperament, so it presents a fun challenge to portray convincingly, especially at 80cm scale.
