Do you have a price limit on certain sizes of dolls/clothes/shoes/etc?

Jan 4, 2015

    1. I've found myself (either consciously or unconsciously) imposing limits on what I can/will spend on certain sizes of dolls and doll-related items. For example, I think I'd be completely unable to spend any more than around $700 on a large doll. For mini dolls, my limit seems to be about $500, for small dolls, about $400, and for tiny dolls, about $200.

I do the same thing for clothes--no more than $50 on any one large doll outfit, $40 on a mini one, and $30 or so on small ones. Shoes too--$30 for large, $20 for mini, $15 for small. For wigs of any size, I normally don't let myself go over $30.

I'm curious to see if others do this--so, do you have a limit on what you'll spend on certain sizes of dolls/doll items, and if you do (and are interested in sharing, no pressure!), what is it?

    2. Leaving doll prices out, as the first company I ordered from has greatly spoiled me on prices. (Such good quality for so much less money! I tend to turn my nose up at prices that are much higher than that, since this company has the aesthetic that I love and no one else really does... :sweat)
For shoes, eyes, and wigs I won't go over $20. For clothes, it varies, but I don't like to go over $30 since I sew most of my doll clothes anyway.

    3. I'd rather weigh my perceived value for the item than setting a limit beforehand. I want to find the specific thing I have in mind and make sure it's of good quality, and then weigh if the price is worth it. If the perfect thing is made and I have been wanting it for years, and I otherwise have never found it (I've been looking at this stuff since 2000, so I know what's out there), I usually will pay a higher price. If that thing just happens to be a lower price, than yay, it's an easy decision. It all depends on what I'm after.

From my spending history I know I wouldn't spend more than $1200 on a doll*, more than $450 on an outfit, $65-$70 on eyes, $75 for a wig, and $80 for shoes. In each case where I have spent that much, it was to get a very specific thing (like $450 for the 9 piece Sadol Kendo set). Ideally, I'd prefer a doll to not be over $900, an outfit to be over $110, $60 for eyes, $40 for shoes and $30 for a wig if I'm just poking around. I am likely to buy on a complete whim if I come across anything for $25 than I like.

When I average out how much I spend on coffee in a year, what I spend on dolls (a thing I get to keep!) is not so bad.

*I mostly have large dolls, and my mini and tiny are both robots, so they don't need much

    4. As I'm very new to BJD, I do set a line for myself for doll's price. I plan to stick only to MSD size and set $300 - $500 for each purchase. As for the clothing, I plan to make them my own but I'd set budget for things that I can't make such as eyes and faceup materials. Also I prefer to make purchase on special event only, that way I've got more value for money that I spent XD!

    5. I told myself I'm never going to spend over $1000 on a basic 60-70cm doll (no clothes, wig, face-up, etc.) I might spend that on a fullset, but never a basic. I don't even like going over $800, to be honest. It would have to be a doll I really, really want to go over that. The upper limit on MSDs would be $500, tinies $350.

For clothes, the most I've spent is $200ish. Depending on the set, I could see myself spending a bit more than that. The price range there depends on what all comes with the set. I wouldn't plunk down that kind of cash for one piece of clothing! I couldn't see myself spending more than $300, though.

Eyes, wigs and shoes $60 is the max normally. I can't think of an instance off hand where I've spent more than that. I'm more comfortable in the $20-30 range though.

    6. A soft limit - if it costs more than I'm willing to spend on it it's too expensive. :) I'm doing that because I'm totally ready to spend more money on, say, a limited Volks head than a normal standard Volks head. Or ready to spend more on a standard Volks head with a face-up I fall in love with than a blank standard Volks head. Or on an outfit that I really, really want.

    7. I don't really have a 'limit', but I have very strict criteria about what I'll buy for my dolls.

Some of my dolls have some very pricey clothes. However, those were the perfect clothes for that doll, and I've gotten good value 'per wear'. So, my price limit is more determined by how much use an item will get-- and obviously, I'm aiming for quality over quantity.

Otherwise, within the category of what is too costly, even if it's perfect-- I think $800 is what I'd consider the absolute maximum that I'd want to spend on a bare resin doll. And it would have be some kind of demonically glorious doll to seduce me into that kind of spending. Usually, I won't buy clothes over $150, even I love them. Even if I have a plan to buy the clothes, and I know that the doll in question would wear that outfit often, part of me just puts it off because I have a (fairly natural) aversion to spending that kind of money on doll clothes.

    8. I used to limit it and telling to myself "not more than 40$" but now.... whenever I saw a nice clothes for my dolls I ended that I have to buy it without thinking twice. xD

    9. My limit for large dolls would be absolutely no more though $1000. I will always aim for $600. For MSD I don't want to spend more than $500. As for clothes I don't really put limits on that. If I find a lovely outfit that I could never make myself then I would probably buy it. As for dolls, I need to set limits for myself lol. :)

    10. I base my spending limits on my financial situation at the time. When I first joined the hobby, I had no bills so I really had no limits.

Now, I have two young children, a house payment, car payment, utilities, etc. So my opinion on what is too expensive has changed.

My limit for SD and larger at the moment is around $500. MSD- around 300. Anything smaller, I won't pay over $200. These are sort of soft limits, but I have noticed that dolls over these price points will not be considered much further.

For clothing, I tend to look for deals. I normally like to pay around 20 for wigs, but I will pay more if I find one that's perfect. Wigs are hard for me, so I try to give myself some wiggle room there. Eyes I will not spend over 25. Just won't. Clothing can vary, but I can say I'm not one of those people willing to buy a $180-200+ outfit. I am usually willing to spend around $70 for a really nice SD dress though. Shoes all seem to be expensive so I just find what I like.

These are based on my everyday income. Now for times like Christmas cash or income taxes, I may cough up a bit more money if I really feel like something is worth it.

    11. I lie to myself too much to keep limits. XD I said I would never spend over $50 on an outfit for a doll, and even that used to seem outrageous, but I just bought Dhani's wedding suit for nearly $200, soooo.......I think limits mean nothing anymore.

It just depends on the quality of the item, how hard it is to find, how well it will fit......$20 for a generic pair of jeans on ebay, with a fly that stays open, no tiny details, no fading, stiff bulky fabric--- sounds high to me. Yet I've paid up to $60 for a pair of jeans that had tiny rivets, snap fly, realistic fading/"whiskers", detailed waistband and pockets, with a low rise waist that fit my doll like jeans should fit a real person. Same with any clothing. I don't even want it free if it's bulky, out of proportion, low quality or doesn't fit right, but make it as realistic as possible and price limits go out the window if it's just that "perfect" thing for my doll.

    12. I only have one limit: Never spend more than 1500 dollars on a doll. My SwD Lucas was 1500 and since he's my favorite (together with my Williams), he's the rule all other dolls are measured against.

As for other items, I don't really have a limit: All my dolls only have one outfit, wig, pair of eyes, pair of shoes and personal accessories, so that helps to keep the cost down.

    13. I have no real price limit on bjd's, as long as I want the doll and it's a reasonable price for the sculpt then I will consider it. I won't buy it if I don't readily have the money on me. I'd be broke if I weren't so picky.
Clothes is a different story no more than $60 for a outfit for my slim mini (Consist of 3 clothing pieces and 1-2 acc), $20-30 for shoes, and $45 for wigs. Furniture and accessories can be bought at thrift stores and flea markets for a bargain. The bigger diorama stuff can be bought at Etsy and American Girl (Pricey).

    14. I never thought about this.
I don't think i'd buy something too pricey unless it's something im really attracted or attached to.
      But with clothes and wigs...
Better be realistic and high quality or cheap.
That's why im planning to sell my stuff for pretty cheap.

    15. $200 max for dolls, $20 max for a wig, and I don't buy clothes except shoes, ever. I sew so that's a waste of $$$ for me. I'm cheap and I freely admit that, but it's what my budget can afford. I'm not a high end doll collector but I still like BJD's...

    16. Nothing wrong with being cheap.
One day we'll have fancy stuff too. :D

    17. I guess I work more with estimates then with actual price limits. For dolls that's about $500. I'm not into SD's or L.E's so that's a big money saver.
The same goes for clothes and all. I don't have a price limit. But I do know that I am really hesistant to buy expensive items (expensive in my opinion is >$30). That might sound cheap to some, but I have to draw a line somewhere. It's not that they pay their share when it comes to rent and stuff :XD:

    18. Right now I am definitely sticking to a budget, and I'm okay with that. There's a lot of new factors in my life now I didn't used to have-saving for a wedding and moving out into a new home with my fiance. Before I was okay saving and spending up to $600 for a large doll. Now, not so much. I'm not in the market for any more small dolls (unless it's a pet doll), and all of the heads I currently want are $100. That leaves bodies left. For the boys, I'm pretty much set on not spending any more than $250 (I would prefer $200 but am allowing myself a tiny bit of wiggle room). For my girl, no more than $300 as she'll be my only girl and I really want to love her body 100%.

As for outfits, I'm trying to stick for no more than $50 for mini outfits and $80 for larger. These are tricky however as my dolls don't have a lot of clothes and I prefer to buy fullset outfits that are more elaborate and really suit them, so while these are ballpark estimates I think I can be swayed to spend a little more as these are rare purchases. I won't pay more than $30 for wigs though, and that's steep. If I did I would be drowning in them. I already have too many as it is and I need to reel myself in, especially since my dolls really don't need them.

    19. Hum, I don't think I have a limit for dolls or clothing items. I probably do subconsciously.

Otherwise it really comes down to whether or not I have the extra funds at the time and if the item is special enough. I try to have some dolly play money set aside so if there's something truly special then I can get it.

I probably won't ever pay more than $1,000 for a doll just because I tend to like blank dolls. And the dolls in the $1k range are either full sets or not the style I collect (like the Lusions, Trinity). I also don't have any grail dolls to search for on the second hand market.

For clothing, shoes, etc…I like to curate them, so I tend to pay a lot in EMS shipping cost.

    20. Yes, I do. It may be a bit silly to have a limit the way I do and yet have more than twenty dolls... But somehow I just can't face paying more than $600 for a doll. It's a mental barrier I don't seem to be able to cross. I guess I suspect that if I pay that much, I may end up not liking the doll as much because I won't be able to forget just how much I paid for it :/. It's the point where I start wondering if I really, really need the doll and if it is going to be everything it's cracked up to be.

And it really does work like this. Two months ago, I saw this limited doll that was practically the doll of my dreams: a tan Souldoll Vito faun. But with the faun parts he came down to $800. And I couldn't do it. I have thought about him a lot since, but - no, I found that price insurmountable. I guess the fact that I have just bought a flat and was being inundated with bills when he came out didn't help, but I don't think I'd have bought him at that price even if I'd had more cash at the time.

To be sure, if I were to calculate the total price of some of my hybrids with customs fees included, I think one or two of them may have cost $600 or even a bit more. But the idea of paying $600 and then adding the customs fees - no. No, I can't do it. And I'm not sure I ever will.
