It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Do you own "project" dolls?

Apr 6, 2015

    1. So, I just got my first BJD, and she's lovely. I had her done with full faceup, and I began thinking about what I would do in the future, when I wanted her faceup redone.

I caved and just ordered an Obitsu blank set, clothes, eyes, and a wig to use as a "project" doll. (My poor wallet!) I'm so excited to have something to work on and style myself.

So my question to you is:
Do you have any project dolls? Have you bonded with them, or are they more like art projects that you just use to practice? Any recommendations and pictures are welcome!

    2. Omg. Almost all of my dolls are bought expressly to become an art project and to practice my modification and sculpting skills. Except Lilian Nadine who is already perfection.

My current project is Thea. haha

    3. Several of the dolls I own have become "projects," whether by design, by accident, or just over time. My first doll is getting a new body (hopefully soon!), with an extra chest piece so he can, at times, have poseable wings (the pieces for which I already have). Another couple of dolls had some engineering difficulties; one of them has had the work done on her to correct the problems, while the other hasn't been fixed up yet. The first of my two SD boys came to me secondhand, in very rough shape, and was quite the project to clean up, restore, and get looking good again (but he's gorgeous now). And I have an ongoing, long-term project to resculpt both a MNF and a LTF body to have automail:

For the most part, though, a doll for me doesn't need much more than a faceup and blushing (plus the right eyes, wig, and clothes) to be complete, and rarely ends up faced with any of my tools.

    4. hmm...well....I don't really do much along the lines of modding, other than minor sanding, piercing, and eye opening, but I guess you could say ALL of my dolls are sort of project dolls? I usually do all of their faceups myself, as well as picking my own hybrids, body blushing, tattooing, piercing, sometimes wig making/styling. So I guess that sort of makes them all a project, just not as involved as what some people do!

    5. Same with me! I don't do any modding, but all my dolls are projects in that I blush them, sew for them, and style them myself. One of them has been half naked for months, the poor guy ;) But he has a wig that I made myself and some eyes on the way, at least, after trying several pairs that just weren't right for him.

    6. I am waiting for a Resinsoul Ming in red that will be modded to become an imp.
He will be my first real mod project. So far I have only done minor work to fix posing issues and such. But this guy will get wings, tail and some other things. I intend to make them properly jointed, not just put them on with magnets, so it will require a bit of modding. I'm looking forward too it.

    7. I plan to after I buy some other dolls first. I'd love to have one that's set aside for experimenting with. Once I like the way something is I loathe to change it so having a designated target would really help with that.

    8. My biggest project will be my ghost girls I don't have them yet I think it'll take me awhile before I buy another doll since I have bought 2 this year already. I plan to get them transparent hands and blush them so it appears they are fading towards the fingers. But for that I will need an air brush. One of my girls heads is off being modded right now but they are simple mods piercings and an eye closer.

    9. I'm exactly the same.
I wouldn't dare alter my current doll. Not unless her face-up got smeared really badly or something. She's too perfect the way she is.
That's why I'm getting my Obitsu. :dance

    10. "Projects" are one of the reason why I have dolls.
No big deal by now since I'm a little scared to carve in the doll but I willing to try new techniques. At the moment it is more like crafting wings, animal's ears and tails, and scars (made of pastel and glue). I also craft weapons, armor and accessories but my skills still needs practice.
Faceups are yet to be tried!

    11. All my dolls are kinda project dolls. That's really the whole point for me. And the more I do with them, the more I bond!

    12. Eeek, no. The way I look at it is that these dolls are too expensive to use as project dolls. I love mine as she is. :sweat

    13. I don't own any project dolls. I've been thinking about getting a "project" head just to practice faceups on, since I've been out for the hobby for a while. My only problem is, is that I'm horribly picky when it comes to choosing a sculpt to go with. :doh

    14. I'm constantly on the hunt for damaged or "project" dolls as a way to practice doll modding, but they aren't easy to find. I guess some people might be embarrassed to sell a "broken" doll, but I would love to take a doll thats been well played with and given a new look!

    15. Most, if not all of my dolls can be considered a project in one way or another. I am constantly looking out to hybridize and mod and change around and add to them to bring them as close to their intended characters as possible. This often means modding the head, the body, both, giving them faceups, finding the right hands, the right wardrobes, changing wigs and eyes to find what fits best... sometimes even moving them onto new sculpts if I find out that my vision of the character has changed. In other words, a constant state of them being works in progress.

Yes, sometimes I am quite satisfied with the way a doll looks and they might remain in said state for an indefinite amount of time but the process is bound to jumpstart itself again at some point without fail.
