Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?

Nov 28, 2010

    1. (I thought I may have seen a thread for this before, but when I did a search for 'limiteds' I didn't see it. I'm tired, though, so I may have missed the obvious. Sorry if this is the case.)

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?

I love the limiteds I own and enjoy playing with them, and whereas I know it would be difficult to replace them, I feel like I'd want to take them out with me to a meet or somewhere else so that I could enjoy them even more. (I mostly haven't yet since the proper opportunity hasn't arisen, yet.)

I know to be careful and watchful of course, though I still know I'd be taking a 'risk' of something happening to them by doing this. Still, I bought my dolls to enjoy them (and not by letting them sit in a display case, either, though I don't criticize anyone who does), so I'm not paranoid about terrible things happening to them on an outing - just aware that something could happen.

What are all of your feelings on this? Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?

    2. I am more cautious with my more limited dolls than I am with my standard dolls, that's for sure. For instance:

-I have a doll with an expensive faceup from an artist that is no longer doing commissions. I VERY rarely take her out, because while the doll itself could be replaced, her faceup can't and I'm trying to make it last as long as possible.

-I sometimes take my tinies with me out shopping so I can compare the scale of things on them, and would just pop a face mask on them or wrap their face in tissue paper and stick them in my purse.

-I have been MUCH more picky with my FCS girl than my other dolls, especially when it comes to taking her to meetups-anywhere too risky (like the pizza place meet we had not long ago) and she doesn't come along.

I DID have a bad experience once, though. I'd taken out the first doll I mentioned, with the special faceup, because I wanted to find just the right trim for her. I'd set her back in my little hand basket instead of in my purse after I'd gotten her out to compare a few things, since it was a bit hard to get her in there in the first place. To my utter horror, while I was unloading things from my basket the cashier grabbed her by the head and started to stuff her in one of the bags! I quickly told the woman to stop, and she said that she was just trying to help. I still don't understand why she thought it was alright to just grab a customer's things. It's not like she was trying to ring the doll up, thinking that it was merchandise. That was the last time that I brought that doll out to a non-meetup event though.

I've had plenty of fine experiences though, like when I took my SD boy to Hobby Lobby once and the cashier was talking about what a "cool punk doll" he was, or the time I was in JoAnns with one of my dolls in the top part of my cart and a woman stopped me because she actually knew what that doll was. The good times have outweighed the bad, but whenever I decide to take a doll out I have to think "How likely is it that I can replace anything that would get damaged?"

    3. I own my dolls to enjoy playing with them, and yes, taking them outside. Whether or not they are limited or rare sculpts (I have owned many limited dolls, and I consider my Lina rare because of all his modifications, his discontinued skin tone, and even his old-type body, which I prefer over the new double-jointed one) I need to be able to 'interact' with my doll to bond with it, you know?

I treat all of my dolls the same, regardless of that fact as well - that is to say, very carefully. I store each doll in the dark away from sunlight (and indoor lighting, if I can help it, as well), and I play very gently with all of them. I am more aware of how carefully I play when I am out with a doll who is limited or rare, and am that much more vigilant on 'policing' the doll at meet ups, but as long as others are careful with them, they are allowed to handle them as well, though rules always apply (ie, no touching the face, move limbs gently and slowly, no standing dolls on concrete or cement, no leaving the doll by itself, especially while posed to stand, etc). I find though, that most individuals in the hobby know the worth of a doll, so they treat mine just as respectfully as I do.

I have not had bad experiences with my limited and rare dolls myself, because I am cautious. However, accidents happen, and I've met several members whose Euclase dolls have fallen and chipped or broken parts because of the doll being left unsupervised, or the doll falling mid-pose on concrete, which is where I adopted my 'no concrete' rule, especially for my big heavies, like Kratos.

I am less likely to take him out, not only because he is rare and limited, but because he is fully body blushed and very heavy to carry. I am more likely to take out and play with a smaller doll for personal comfort (I have arthritis) and because then I am less likely to chip at blushing, though of course, wear should be expected with any doll who is not kept in a box for a century.

Like I said, though, it has more to do with his size and painting than it does his limited-ness. At least, for me it does. Not that I think you should toss around and play some basketball with your rare dolls, but I do think that you should be able to have fun with them, just the way you would any other doll. Hopefully, you can understand what I mean when I say that. :daisy

    4. I always take the best care I can of all my BJD and I have taken all of them out with me as well. One of them (BuddyDoll W-Buddy Jiny) is, more than limited, although standard, the only one I have seen and she has been already at a meeting up. In the case of other of my BJD (Luts Senior Delf Abadon LE) the limited thing is his face-up and he has been to a meet-up too. The only one of my BJD I do not take to meet-ups is a tanning one (CP Luts Delf Tanning Lishe) which is not on sale anymore, but my main worry for not doing so is I think she could be easyly damaged by people who do not know how to handle this kind of tanning BJD. If I take her to a meeting up someday I will be extremely careful and a bit afraid, I am afraid, but I would really love to take her too with me to a meeting up to enjoy her also that way.

    5. I would only take my rare dolls to meet ups in their doll bag, I wouldnt take them outside otherwise. I dont think I trust myself taking them out for photo shoots etc! Im more concerned about face ups being rubbed off or chipped even in a bag, especially if theyre done by people I have commissioned.

    6. I treat all my dolls the same which means that I treat them all with care (rarity and value have little to do with how I feel about them sentimentally), yet I'm not paranoid about it either. The few LEs I have are no more fragile than anyone else, and accidents can still happen at home.

    7. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
I have one doll with OOAK head that cannot be replaced (Simon). I take him outside rather often.

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
There would always be a risk for sure but taking the doll outside (to meets or to photoshoots) is an important part of the hobby for me. So I take that risk.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
Yes, it happened at the doll exhibition "Kyiv Fairy Tale – 2010". Chief organizer of the exhibition Anton Sazonov tried to take away Simon roughly, pulling him by his legs when I started to unpack Simon (he was in a doll carrier). So I even had to use force to take him back. And I was not allowed to attend the exhibition, even with packed tight doll. It was the ONLY case my doll was treated that way, though I was taking dolls outside many times before.
Mr. Sazonov said that I tried to exhibit Simon for free, to organize a spontaneous exhibition on the territory of the fair. That is not true, of course: people often bring their dolls to the dollie fairs in many countries.

But no, I hope other people are much more adequate so I will continue to take Simon outside.

    8. I own two limited dolls from SOOM <3 A glot and a grit.

I've taken my Grit to a con, had him at a dolly meet. I'm not too worried about anything happening to him (probably because he's small? I'd probably be more worried if he were larger/heavier). And my glot I've taken out in public/to the mall for a meet with a friend.

It makes me happy to have them out and about. n.n Cause I love to have people see them, and have them see other things too! :D it can get pretty boring just being inside alllllll the time. :/

The only bad thing I've ever had happen was while I was at a con... I lost one of grits horns. I was freaking out sooooooo hard. I almost cried, cause we were outside on the pavement at night and i could hardly see a rock on the pavement, nevermind semi-transparent resin that's smaller than most rocks.
Fortunately I found it... it had fallen INTO my bag. Phew. But yeah.. He didn't wear his horns for the rest of the con haha. Outside of that I've never had any problems at all. ^^

    9. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
Yup! I admit my Beryl and Sard don't make the tour very often, but even they've gone on 2 outdoor photoshoots, been to a couple meets, a couple Cons and they came home with me last xmas.

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
I love being able to share my more unusual dolls that people may not have gotten to see in person before.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
Beryl has fallen before and chipped the paint off the end of her horn, but I sorta am used to patching her blushing since her hooves chip all the time. That was my own fault though. When I bring her out, everyone I've met has been very respectful of her.

The most questionable experience was, like chibidrigger, losing a horn. I customized my Angelheim Luka into a dragon and he has 4 horns on his head. Sometime during the meet as he was passed around, one of his horns disappeared. Fortunately I was able to find it by scouring the floor at the very end of the meet, but those magnets stick to anything and I was afraid it had just stuck to something or someone and disappeared.

    10. I take any of my dolls including the one limited I have, (and will take the limited that is coming to me at Christmas) out and about.
They go to meetings, aimed at children and for all types of dolls, and spend a couple of weeks a year camping with me.

They are carefully handled, but how can I NOT take them with?

    11. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
Yes, but not often. Not because I'm afraid something will happen exactly....Though I don't take my two WS Kara Klums out in the sun because they're so white why take the chance? Same with my Uber tan Kamau. But that's about as cautious as I get. I don't take my Kamau out much because he's huge more than that he's an LE. I have four Kara Klums and the two NS ones are my favorites anyway so one of them usually accompanies me for outings n stuff. My Bory is an LE and he's gone all sorts of places :3 So's my Breakaway.

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
I like taking the dolls places, whether it's a dollmeet or photo shoot...It's fun! I wouldn't own them if I didn't have fun with them, so to me, leaving them at home all the time is pointless. I have a lot of dolls though, so most of them really don't get out all that often...

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
      Nope. They're all perfectly fine.

    12. I take my dolls outside when they first arrive, they each have to attend church at least once. They may accompany me when I travel or attend special functions. However, after this initial phase, they are kept at home. I am now reluctant to let the rare LEs go outside even for doll meets and photo sessions.

    13. This is going to sound horrible, but... I take my dolls out regardless if they're limited or not. I do my best to keep them as safe as possible, and store them where they're less likely to get sunlight (which is easy, as the townhouse is practically a cave ^^). But I didn't buy my dolls so I could look at them as they sit pretty on a shelf. *shrugs* I don't condemn anyone who does that (if that's how they best enjoy their dolls, more power to them!), but I like playing with my dolls, even if it means taking them outside.

    14. How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?

Once I get them, they befome just one of my dolls and get treated the same way as the rest of them. All my dolls go places with me (meets, work, conventions, visiting friends etc) regardless of being limiteds or not. In fact my Limited Petite Ai went home with a freind's toddler for a couple of weeks after a convention until the next time I babysat her.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?[/QUOTE]

You mean like th time one fell off a statue at a meet and broke a finger when she hit the cobbled street? Yes, it happens, it could have been any of the non limited's I also had at the meet, or anyone else's too. The hand has been replaced and the doll is none the worse for her adventure and still goes to meets and still climbs anything handy to climb (statues, trees, people, other dolls, the cat on occasion).

    15. Yes, I take them out of the house and bring them to meets/cons/etc.
I am very cautious with my dolls. And wont let them out of my sight. 1m is the highest space between me and my doll when Im outside xD

    16. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
I have a Maestro Baha and a MD Yrie, and I have taken them out of my house few times. I am usually not too super hiper careful with my dolls, though I obviously take enough care. But when I have my limited outside I become almost paranoid.

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
I do think I get obssessive for some reasons: First, those dolls are specially expensive and usually they have very special parts, accessories or make-ups. Furthermore, there are some people who really cannot handle with enough care their own dolls, so I'm not to let them take mine.
I only have taken out my Yrie 3 times, and my Maestro Baha just one, and with this one I really suffered too much.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
Luckily not with those two. But in my last meet-up, I received back one of my dolls and I saw with displeasure it had its make-up damaged in the nose :/

So, to sum up, I agree to show our dolls in meet ups, but sometimes we have to be specially careful with those rare or limited dolls.

    17. I don't have any yet. But I know that if I did, I would probably rarely take them out of the house. I live in a bad neighborhood, so if I had a LE or rare doll, I wouldn't want it to be in danger of being stolen.

    18. Sure, most of my collection is LEs, and most of them go out regularly. I do have some shelf-baby cases (too fragile, complicated body parts, couture faceup, etc.) who don't travel, or who only come out to certain friends' houses. But otherwise, it's all a matter of whom I'm in the mood to bring.

It also depends on the event. For conventions, or other crowds = 1 doll only, and I prefer Volks boys because they're really sturdy & can take a few bumps. For doll-conventions, 2 dolls, but it still has to be someone sturdy. For small indoor parties or events = 1-3 dolls, any color, anybody I feel like padding-and-packing-up. For outdoor meetups = No tans; NS or white only. Anywhere from 1-3 dolls (though I've brought as many as 4).

The dolls always travel in a carrying-bag anyway-- so if there's a risky event going on (say, nearby glasses of red wine), they can go back into the bag for safekeeping.

Re dolls on the streets: I live an extremely 'colorful' neighborhood too - and I find that crackheads have little to no interest in me or my dolls, because they have bigger problems of their own. I'm far from the weirdest thing they've seen all day. Carry your doll in a carrying-bag, and they're safe travelling all over any city. When I do take them out of the bag for, say, a snapshot in front of the strip club, all they ever seem to get is amused/enchanted cooings from staff or passersby. ^^

    19. How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
I'm fine with it. I take my Benny, Adia, out all the time. Granted she's usually in the carrier, but I've had nothing but fun with her about. People generally seem to like her and everyone I've let hold her has been very careful.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
Sort of, but both were my own fault. The first one was when I lost one of her set earrings somewhere between my house and a store. >_< Then at Animefest I lost one of her wrist rings! I got a replacement earring but now all Adia wears out of her fullset are two bracelets that I could remake if they broke. As for the wrist ring, I took out the other one and the next time I order from IH I'll get two more.

    20. I treat my limited dolls pretty much the exact same way I treat my standard dolls. If I wasn't comfortable doing that I probably wouldn't have bought them. The only thing I did do was opt not to send my Toppi's head to a faceup artist outside the US, because I wouldn't have been able to ship it insured without a lot of trouble and expense, and I wasn't comfortable doing that with that valuable a head.
