Does anyone have a Floating Head collection with fewer bodies?

Apr 12, 2015

    1. So I've been thinking about starting a floating head collection and am wondering if anyone has one?

I really don't want a lot of full dolls since I like to display my dolls as well as sew for them. I've learned that if I have too many bodies to sew for I become overwhelmed and shut down. So it's important for me to limit the number of bodies I have.

But I also love so many sculpts! So I was thinking about starting a floating head collection that I'd create a display for. Something along the lines of a wall mounted box with a number of say 5 x 5" cubby holes. I'd make each head it's own wig and an interesting headpiece and then display it in the box. That way I can easily change out a head if I need some variety yet keep the number of bodies I have to sew for to a minimum.

Does anyone have a floating head collection?

Even if you don't have a head collection, could you all share your display ideas and any thoughts, good or bad, you may have about collecting heads?

      Thank you so much!

    2. I totally agree with you on being overwhelmed by the number of bodies I have to sew for!! I also have a collection of floating heads (especially Switch's) but I haven't thought of making display boxes for them. That is such a cute idea!! I think maybe making seperators (walls) inside a drawer to place the heads in might be nice too to avoid sunlight. ^ ^

    3. I used to have a lot of floating heads and only 2 full dolls when I was still collecting Dollfie Dreams, but I was actually overwhelmed by everything I knew I wanted to buy for them so they'd feel ''complete". It didn't exactly help the bonding process either. I rather not have any floating heads now. I have one, and even that makes me feel uneasy. So yeah, only full dolls for me ^^.

    4. As of right now I have my very few floating heads on a board stuck on pieces of dowels and foam pads that I glued on, sort of like on a wig or hat stand. The only one that isn't on it is the brand new one I am trying to sell and want to keep nice. Likely I won't keep them all, no. I started out with more heads than bodies but I found myself really wanting to have all my dolls on a proper body, not sharing one. I just don't like the whole floating head thing. Something about a bodiless head bugs the heck out of me. Until it's on a body I am very uncomfortable with it.

    5. I don't like heads that aren't the same character sharing the same body. It feels as though the floating head is "possesing" the body of the character who had the body first. So I'm glad one of my floating heads got a body. There are two (non sleeping) heads / faces left now. One is for practising (and botched), the other didn't sell, so now she's in a jar with some decorations, waiting for a make-over.

When I qualified for an event head (Lati), I didn't hesitate to buy the body too. I'm much more prone to bonding if the head has a body. That way I can dress them up and pose them with the other dolls. My dolls even "own" their extra hands. LOL.

As far as displaying heads go:
I like the jar idea, because it kind of reminds me of futurama and old school horror.
You could also get them their own chairs.
You could put them into mini bookcases, so one head takes up a whole shelf.
Or a wall mounted cabinet with doors (to block sunlight).
Put them in decorated boxes to reveal them in full glory when you take the lid of.
      Miniature bird cages.

    6. I love that head in a chair idea Shirelae :aheartbea I have a few floating heads and I had thought about head-swapping on bodies as I don't like to have too many dolls on display, but I find the problem is I get attached to a doll and feel mean giving their body to a floating head LOL - not that they care! But I find it hard to see my dolls as just 'objects' - they are alive to me, so it's hard to behead them :XD: But body-sharing is a great idea otherwise - I too get overwhelmed by having too many dolls to dress and look at - I like to ideally see them all on one small shelf, so I've done a lot of downsizing recently. I could have kept all their heads and they could have shared just one body, but I know I would tend to leave the heads boxed and then just want to buy them a body of their very own (spoilt children!) ^_^

    7. Your idea is wonderful! I wish I can make a small display for my floaters also. I don't aim to keep them all as floating heads to be honest; as a matter of fact I never intended to have as many floating heads to begin with. Event heads and limiteds do tend to stack up though and getting bodies can often be a lengthy ordeal; what with all those companies releasing new dolls as often. For now, space is also an issue but despite that I'd still rather have full dolls than floating heads (call me a masochist if you will) I very much more enjoy seeing my dolls all put together; if nothing because all of them represent characters in the same story and it's nice to see them "interracting" or just sitting together in 3D space.

    8. Not exactly a collection of floating heads but I do have several heads that share bodies with each other. My SD16 girl body got three heads, so far: Frannie, Amélie and Aidan. My MNF boy body got four heads: Piedro, Clint, a Luca head and a Siean head. And my Unidoll boy body got two heads: Armand and Tharesion. (Also, Raziel was face-upped to fit on my Dragon Doll Uncle body.) It definitely does save space. And I can put different dolls on display. :) The heads I'm not using usually are wrapped and boxed.

    9. I really dislike having doll heads share bodies. I can't do it. If I have a head that's its own character, I want it to have its own body.

I have alternate heads (sleeping, romantic, etc) for about five of my existing characters, though. I don't mind that at all.

I like the Futurama idea, LOL!

    10. I don't care to have heads sharing bodies, either; particularly because I have a number of different body types throughout my collection, and wouldn't be able to do that (among many other things) if they were all sharing just a few bodies. Currently, I have only two floating heads; one's been waiting ages for the right body to come along, and the other never suited any body, but for various reasons I can't bear to part with him, so he's moved onto a Luts display bust, and will remain there.

    11. I have a floating head collection. but I tend to think of my dolls that are not in the "studio model" category as sculptures - a few are full dolls because I think the bodies are interesting. The rest I put on head stands (Ringdoll calls them "show shelf") and line up on a shelf like traditional busts.

    12. I used to have quite a few floating heads, but have since either sold them or got bodies for them. I don't like heads sharing bodies since they are all different characters, and I don't really feel like displaying bodiless heads because part of the fun for me is creating a doll that looks very lifelike that I can photograph. Just a head wouldn't really cut it for me now, but at one time I wanted to collect heads that had faceups from many different artists because I thought it would be cool. Anyways, for display, personally I would have to do a bust or something similar. I know Granado sells upper torso bases for display of SD-sized dolls.

    13. I have one floating head. She is a Volks DD head and was originally for a SQLab SG, but then I lacked the funds for the body, so now I just have a floating head. I keep on meaning to buy her a body, but it keeps on being pushed back. Every time I look at her, all I think is, "Now, what am I going to do with you?"

    14. I think it's very easy to have a floating head collection. I've had quite a large one, off and on, mostly because I like to buy the heads separately from the body--I don't mind resin matching, and I'm rather picky with body aesthetics and flexibility. I have to find "just the right one" before I purchase the body.

    15. I have a lot of floating heads, but they weren't intended as a collection. They just accumulated. I love the storage/display ideas, especially the chair!

    16. I have daydreamed about only having a floating head collection, and I mean -just collecting heads with no intention of ever getting bodies for them....Since it's the faces I'm most attracted to, having just the head means I can have more, without the worries of storage, resin matching, size restrictions, and the expenses associated with a full bjd. Will I ever do this? No, no, let's face it, I'd want them to have bodies -especially the favorites. A cupboard for display would be cool though.

    17. You've all addressed my fears about starting a floating head collection and that is will I be comfortable with the heads not having bodies? I'm just not sure I can do that for the very reasons you've mentioned. But then Kurogane really expressed how I feel about the different sculpts - that I just love the faces of so many dolls! And, quite honestly, I'll never be able to afford all the dolls I love plus I'd feel totally overwhelmed by them even if I could.

Can I ask everyone another question -

Do you find that you can box up some of your dolls to lesson that feeling of having to have all of them properly clothed, with shoes and wigs and just the right eyes?

I'm at a crossroads right now. I've built up my collection over the past year and really love most of the dolls I have. So I've also been thinking about building my MSD size dolls a townhouse with a shop and garden space below instead of buying more dolls and floating heads.

Hey! Maybe include an attic space in the townhouse for floaters? Or is that too scary?

    18. I have had at some point alternative heads for sleeping/romantic sculpts, but all-in-all I'm incapable of having floating heads or dolls that share bodies. My dolls need to be their own completed thing, especially since most of them are heavily character based. For some reason having a bunch of parts around lessens the magic of the hobby for me? I don't know how to explain it. Maybe it makes them seem more toy like (nothing against toys though, I collect those too!) but I don't know. The only exception I would make is if I didn't like the body something came with and couldn't afford it immediately or if something was discontinuing. Like I almost bought a DZ Cosmo head. But it would have drove me crazy, so I just skipped the whole thing lol

    19. Pony -I have put most of my bjd collection away in a drawer to lessen the 'stress' of not having them look the way I want. :sweat
I love them too much to sell, but need a break so to say, and putting them away has helped so much. I still have them and can look at them anytime I want, but do not feel the pressing need to make them perfect (get this, make that). In a few months I will be getting my first SD and am planning on treating him like my first bjd and starting all over again, and this time, taking it easy. Learning from my past mistakes and having more patience, lol.

I think making a townhouse for your msds would be fantastic! It would make a wonderful storage, display area, and think of the pictures you could take with your bjds! For the attic storage, you could put in cupboard doors if the idea of having heads stored in there might distract from the over all look. Great idea, wish I had the space, even for yosd.

    20. Last year I had to sell a lot of bodies for financial reasons, and I ended up with only four bodies for ten heads. I couldn't stand it, and I don't know if it wasbbecause it wasn't my choice, but it was sooo stressful to me to have to put one doll away in order to be able to enjoy another. And I do sometimes find it stressful when my dolls don't have new clothes/clothes that fit their personality/perfect eyes and wigs, but for me having to choose who was on display was way worse. Especially since some of them were sharing bodies that were only sort of like the one that had belonged to them, they would end up looking wrong to me by sharing. Maybe someone else could make it work, but this year I find myself selling everything that's not nailed down to try to get more bodies back.
